The following problem is considered. Given the locations of the Central Processing Unit (ar;the terminals which have to communicate with it, to determine the number and locations of the concentrators and to assign the terminals to the concentrators in such a way that the total cost is minimized. There is alao a fixed cost associated with each concentrator. There is ail upper limit to the number of terminals which can be connected to a concentrator. The terminals can be connected directly to the CPU also In this paper it is assumed that the concentrators can bo located anywhere in the area A containing the CPU and the terminals. Then this becomes a multimodal optimization problem. In the proposed algorithm a stochastic automaton is used as a search device to locate the minimum of the multimodal cost function . The proposed algorithm involves the following. The area A containing the CPU and the terminals is divided into an arbitrary number of regions (say K). An approximate value for the number of concentrators is assumed (say m). The optimum number is determined by iteration later The m concentrators can be assigned to the K regions in (mk) ways (m > K) or (km) ways (K>m).(All possible assignments are feasible, i.e. a region can contain 0,1,â¦, to concentrators). Each possible assignment is assumed to represent a state of the stochastic variable structure automaton. To start with, all the states are assigned equal probabilities. At each stage of the search the automaton visits a state according to the current probability distribution. At each visit the automaton selects a 'point' inside that state with uniform probability. The cost associated with that point is calculated and the average cost of that state is updated. Then the probabilities of all the states are updated. The probabilities are taken to bo inversely proportional to the average cost of the states After a certain number of searches the search probabilities become stationary and the automaton visits a particular state again and again. Then the automaton is said to have converged to that state Then by conducting a local gradient search within that state the exact locations of the concentrators are determined This algorithm was applied to a set of test problems and the results were compared with those given by Cooper's (1964, 1967) EAC algorithm and on the average it was found that the proposed algorithm performs better.

This paper presents a simple hysteretic method to obtain the energy required to operate the gate-drive, sensors, and other circuits within nonneutral ac switches intended for use in load automated buildings. The proposed method features a switch-mode low part-count self-powered MOSFET ac switch that achieves efficiency and load current THD figures comparable to those of an externally gate-driven switch built using similar MOSFETS. The fundamental operation of the method is explained in detail, followed by the modifications required for practical implementation. Certain design rules that allow the method to accommodate a wide range of single-phase loads from 10 VA to 1 kVA are discussed, along with an efficiency enhancement feature based on inherent MOSFET characteristics. The limitations and side effects of the method are also mentioned according to their levels of severity. Finally, experimental results obtained using a prototype sensor switch are presented, along with a performance comparison of the prototype with an externally gate-driven MOSFET switch.

The ergodic or long-run average cost control problem for a partially observed finite-state Markov chain is studied via the associated fully observed separated control problem for the nonlinear filter. Dynamic programming equations for the latter are derived, leading to existence and characterization of optimal stationary policies.

We consider a two timescale model of learning by economic agents wherein active or 'ontogenetic' learning by individuals takes place on a fast scale and passive or 'phylogenetic' learning by society as a whole on a slow scale, each affecting the evolution of the other. The former is modelled by the Monte Carlo dynamics of physics, while the latter is modelled by the replicator dynamics of evolutionary biology. Various qualitative aspects of the dynamics are studied in some simple cases, both analytically and numerically, and its role as a useful modelling device is emphasized.

Recently, efficient scheduling algorithms based on Lagrangian relaxation have been proposed for scheduling parallel machine systems and job shops. In this article, we develop real-world extensions to these scheduling methods. In the first part of the paper, we consider the problem of scheduling single operation jobs on parallel identical machines and extend the methodology to handle multiple classes of jobs, taking into account setup times and setup costs, The proposed methodology uses Lagrangian relaxation and simulated annealing in a hybrid framework, In the second part of the paper, we consider a Lagrangian relaxation based method for scheduling job shops and extend it to obtain a scheduling methodology for a real-world flexible manufacturing system with centralized material handling.

We analyse the fault-tolerant parameters and topological properties of a hierarchical network of hypercubes. We take a close look at the Extended Hypercube (EH) and the Hyperweave (HW) architectures and also compare them with other popular architectures. These two architectures have low diameter and constant degree of connectivity making it possible to expand these networks without affecting the existing configuration. A scheme for incrementally expanding this network is also presented. We also look at the performance of the ASCEND/DESCEND class of algorithms on these architectures.

With the availability of a huge amount of video data on various sources, efficient video retrieval tools are increasingly in demand. Video being a multi-modal data, the perceptions of ``relevance'' between the user provided query video (in case of Query-By-Example type of video search) and retrieved video clips are subjective in nature. We present an efficient video retrieval method that takes user's feedback on the relevance of retrieved videos and iteratively reformulates the input query feature vectors (QFV) for improved video retrieval. The QFV reformulation is done by a simple, but powerful feature weight optimization method based on Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation (SPSA) technique. A video retrieval system with video indexing, searching and relevance feedback (RF) phases is built for demonstrating the performance of the proposed method. The query and database videos are indexed using the conventional video features like color, texture, etc. However, we use the comprehensive and novel methods of feature representations, and a spatio-temporal distance measure to retrieve the top M videos that are similar to the query. In feedback phase, the user activated iterative on the previously retrieved videos is used to reformulate the QFV weights (measure of importance) that reflect the user's preference, automatically. It is our observation that a few iterations of such feedback are generally sufficient for retrieving the desired video clips. The novel application of SPSA based RF for user-oriented feature weights optimization makes the proposed method to be distinct from the existing ones. The experimental results show that the proposed RF based video retrieval exhibit good performance.

The random early detection (RED) technique has seen a lot of research over the years. However, the functional relationship between RED performance and its parameters viz,, queue weight (omega(q)), marking probability (max(p)), minimum threshold (min(th)) and maximum threshold (max(th)) is not analytically availa ble. In this paper, we formulate a probabilistic constrained optimization problem by assuming a nonlinear relationship between the RED average queue length and its parameters. This problem involves all the RED parameters as the variables of the optimization problem. We use the barrier and the penalty function approaches for its Solution. However (as above), the exact functional relationship between the barrier and penalty objective functions and the optimization variable is not known, but noisy samples of these are available for different parameter values. Thus, for obtaining the gradient and Hessian of the objective, we use certain recently developed simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) based estimates of these. We propose two four-timescale stochastic approximation algorithms based oil certain modified second-order SPSA updates for finding the optimum RED parameters. We present the results of detailed simulation experiments conducted over different network topologies and network/traffic conditions/settings, comparing the performance of Our algorithms with variants of RED and a few other well known adaptive queue management (AQM) techniques discussed in the literature.

The Reeb graph tracks topology changes in level sets of a scalar function and finds applications in scientific visualization and geometric modeling. This paper describes a near-optimal two-step algorithm that constructs the Reeb graph of a Morse function defined over manifolds in any dimension. The algorithm first identifies the critical points of the input manifold, and then connects these critical points in the second step to obtain the Reeb graph. A simplification mechanism based on topological persistence aids in the removal of noise and unimportant features. A radial layout scheme results in a feature-directed drawing of the Reeb graph. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of the Reeb graph construction in practice and its applications.

We consider the problem of deciding whether the output of a boolean circuit is determined by a partial assignment to its inputs. This problem is easily shown to be hard, i.e., co-Image Image -complete. However, many of the consequences of a partial input assignment may be determined in linear time, by iterating the following step: if we know the values of some inputs to a gate, we can deduce the values of some outputs of that gate. This process of iteratively deducing some of the consequences of a partial assignment is called propagation. This paper explores the parallel complexity of propagation, i.e., the complexity of determining whether the output of a given boolean circuit is determined by propagating a given partial input assignment. We give a complete classification of the problem into those cases that are Image -complete and those that are unlikely to be Image complete.

Protocols for secure archival storage are becoming increasingly important as the use of digital storage for sensitive documents is gaining wider practice. Wong et al.[8] combined verifiable secret sharing with proactive secret sharing without reconstruction and proposed a verifiable secret redistribution protocol for long term storage. However their protocol requires that each of the receivers is honest during redistribution. We proposed[3] an extension to their protocol wherein we relaxed the requirement that all the recipients should be honest to the condition that only a simple majority amongst the recipients need to be honest during the re(distribution) processes. Further, both of these protocols make use of Feldman's approach for achieving integrity during the (redistribution processes. In this paper, we present a revised version of our earlier protocol, and its adaptation to incorporate Pedersen's approach instead of Feldman's thereby achieving information theoretic secrecy while retaining integrity guarantees.

Background: A genetic network can be represented as a directed graph in which a node corresponds to a gene and a directed edge specifies the direction of influence of one gene on another. The reconstruction of such networks from transcript profiling data remains an important yet challenging endeavor. A transcript profile specifies the abundances of many genes in a biological sample of interest. Prevailing strategies for learning the structure of a genetic network from high-dimensional transcript profiling data assume sparsity and linearity. Many methods consider relatively small directed graphs, inferring graphs with up to a few hundred nodes. This work examines large undirected graphs representations of genetic networks, graphs with many thousands of nodes where an undirected edge between two nodes does not indicate the direction of influence, and the problem of estimating the structure of such a sparse linear genetic network (SLGN) from transcript profiling data. Results: The structure learning task is cast as a sparse linear regression problem which is then posed as a LASSO (l1-constrained fitting) problem and solved finally by formulating a Linear Program (LP). A bound on the Generalization Error of this approach is given in terms of the Leave-One-Out Error. The accuracy and utility of LP-SLGNs is assessed quantitatively and qualitatively using simulated and real data. The Dialogue for Reverse Engineering Assessments and Methods (DREAM) initiative provides gold standard data sets and evaluation metrics that enable and facilitate the comparison of algorithms for deducing the structure of networks. The structures of LP-SLGNs estimated from the INSILICO1, INSILICO2 and INSILICO3 simulated DREAM2 data sets are comparable to those proposed by the first and/or second ranked teams in the DREAM2 competition. The structures of LP-SLGNs estimated from two published Saccharomyces cerevisae cell cycle transcript profiling data sets capture known regulatory associations. In each S. cerevisiae LP-SLGN, the number of nodes with a particular degree follows an approximate power law suggesting that its degree distributions is similar to that observed in real-world networks. Inspection of these LP-SLGNs suggests biological hypotheses amenable to experimental verification. Conclusion: A statistically robust and computationally efficient LP-based method for estimating the topology of a large sparse undirected graph from high-dimensional data yields representations of genetic networks that are biologically plausible and useful abstractions of the structures of real genetic networks. Analysis of the statistical and topological properties of learned LP-SLGNs may have practical value; for example, genes with high random walk betweenness, a measure of the centrality of a node in a graph, are good candidates for intervention studies and hence integrated computational â experimental investigations designed to infer more realistic and sophisticated probabilistic directed graphical model representations of genetic networks. The LP-based solutions of the sparse linear regression problem described here may provide a method for learning the structure of transcription factor networks from transcript profiling and transcription factor binding motif data.

A unit cube in k-dimension (or a k-cube) is defined as the Cartesian product R-1 x R-2 x ... x R-k, where each R-i is a closed interval on the real line of the form [a(j), a(i), + 1]. The cubicity of G, denoted as cub(G), is the minimum k such that G is the intersection graph of a collection of k-cubes. Many NP-complete graph problems can be solved efficiently or have good approximation ratios in graphs of low cubicity. In most of these cases the first step is to get a low dimensional cube representation of the given graph. It is known that for graph G, cub(G) <= left perpendicular2n/3right perpendicular. Recently it has been shown that for a graph G, cub(G) >= 4(Delta + 1) In n, where n and Delta are the number of vertices and maximum degree of G, respectively. In this paper, we show that for a bipartite graph G = (A boolean OR B, E) with |A| = n(1), |B| = n2, n(1) <= n(2), and Delta' = min {Delta(A),Delta(B)}, where Delta(A) = max(a is an element of A)d(a) and Delta(B) = max(b is an element of B) d(b), d(a) and d(b) being the degree of a and b in G, respectively , cub(G) <= 2(Delta' + 2) bar left rightln n(2)bar left arrow. We also give an efficient randomized algorithm to construct the cube representation of G in 3 (Delta' + 2) bar right arrowIn n(2)bar left arrow dimension. The reader may note that in general Delta' can be much smaller than Delta.
