This paper reports the thermomechanical sensitivity of bimaterial cantilevers over a mid-infrared (IR) spectral range (5-10 µm) that is critical both for chemical analysis via vibrational spectroscopy and for direct thermal detection in the 300-700 K range. Mechanical bending sensitivity and noise were measured and modeled for six commercially available microcantilevers, which consist of either an aluminum film on a silicon cantilever or a gold film on a silicon nitride cantilever. The spectral sensitivity of each cantilever was determined by recording cantilever deflection when illuminated with IR light from a monochromator. Rigorous modeling and systematic characterization of the optical system allowed for a quantitative estimate of IR energy incident upon the cantilever. Separately, spectral absorptance of the cantilever was measured using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) microscopy, which was compared with analytical models of radiation onto the cantilever and heat flow within the cantilever. The predictions of microcantilever thermomechanical bending sensitivity and noise agree well with measurements, resulting in a ranking of these cantilevers for their potential use in IR measurements.

This paper will address questions of identity that male Muslim converts in São Paulo, Brazil face after adopting Islam. Specifically, it will analyze how they place their religion into notions of what it means to be Brazilian. Furthermore, this paper will show how many of these converts use Islam as a way to reconstruct their personal identities. Finally, it will argue that by becoming Muslims, they embrace a transnational religious identity. This paper will seek to show how conversion to Islam in São Paulo can significantly influence how individuals articulate notions of Brazilian national identity and belonging to the nation.

Infrared chemiluminescence (IRCL) studies of cw metal oxidation reactions wherein metal atoms entrained in a carrier gas were mixed with an oxidizer by means of a nozzle system are described. One goal of the work was to determine the vibrational distribution of the product molecule produced by the chemical reaction. In order to observe IRCL it was important to operate the system at the appropriate P-T point in the phase diagram of both the metal and metal salt, otherwise rapid condensation quenched any IRCL that was present. If the nucleation rate was greater 1010 3 than ~ cm-sec-I, then only "black body" radiation could be seen from the reaction. Most of the studies were on the Li/I2 system which is unique in that the phase diagrams of Li and LiI in the P-T ranges of interest are almost identical. This property permitted a relatively easy control with respect to condensation and the measurement of IRCL in the 10-28 um range for the excited LiI molecule.
