Embobied Object, Material Family. Late-Medieval Wood Sculptures Depicting Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child in Finland Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, was one of the most popular saints in Western Europe in the late Middle Ages. She was often depicted with two other figures, the Virgin and the Christ Child (Anna Selbdritt). The dissertation examines the polychrome wood sculptures showing this motif, with a special focus on those remaining in Finland. It investigates the meanings these sculptures had to their observers in the fifteenth-century Finland. The study sheds light to important material heritage which is little known and offers new insights into the cult and imagery of the holy grandmother. Methodologically the study is based on iconology and post-formalist art history, and it appropriates concepts such as spatiality, sanctity, corporeality, and gender. Taking a comparative approach it knits together larger tendencies and local people and incidents. By conflating methodological domains it renews the ways how fragmentary wood sculptures, lacking documentary written sources, can be contextually interpreted and comprehended. The sculptures are analyzed from three angles. Firstly, the study explores the sculptures by focusing on their materiality and facture, which is to consider them as records of their own making. The analysis provides new information concerning the quantity, location, and current condition of the sculptures and it also elucidates problems regarding attribution, dating, display, and craftsmanship. The book presents the results of the empirical study of 45 Saint Anne groups; these works are individually described in the large Appendix. Secondly, the works are contextualized to the specific historical conditions in which they were observed. The study discusses closely the circumstances in the Turku Cathedral around the shrine of Saint Anne, the popular belief, and the piety of individual persons. The sculptures, deemed as the embodiments of the holy characters, interacted with the devotees. Thirdly, the works are examined within the wider theological and ideological currents of the era centered on the body and Incarnation. Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child motif demonstrated the Carnal Trinity, the motherly side of the Holy Trinity. The dissertation argues that Saint Anne was interpreted as the female counterpart or, in a mythical sense, wife of God. Furthermore, the Child s implicit, simultaneous presence as a suffering or dead man imbues the sculptures with a sense of the Passion, thus associating them with the pietà and the Mater dolorosa motifs. The naked Christ Child underlines him as the offering and, eventually, the Eucharistic wafer. The study suggests that the sculptures mediate continuity and the bloodline between the generations by the intertwined and repeated gestures, clothing and positions of the portrayed figures. Regardless of the ostensible homeliness of the sculptures, so readily reiterated by earlier scholars, these sculptures represented creation and birth through the carnal yet holy mothers.

My doctoral dissertation is on Johan Jakob Tikkanen (1857 1930), the first professor of art history in Finland, and his significance and methods in the context of late 19th and early 20th-century European art history. Tikkanen was one of the pioneering scholars in the field of medieval art research, and, along with Anton Springer, Heinrich Wölfflin, Aloïs Riegl, Adolfo Venturi, Franz Wickhoff, Julius von Schlosser, Aby Warburg, Emile Mâle and others, one of the scholars who defined art history as an independent academic discipline. Tikkanen s scholarly interests and his methods resemble those of many formalistically oriented German and Austrian art historians of his time. He became well known throughout Europe, mainly for his studies on illustrated medieval manuscripts. Tikkanen s dissertation, Der Malerische Styl Giotto s Versuch zu einer Characteristik Desselben, from 1884 was regarded in its day as the best form-analytical study on the painter. It has a central position in the present thesis, as it already included nearly all the methods that Tikkanen used and elaborated upon throughout his career. Giotto also gives a good perspective for comparing Tikkanen s ideas with a long art-historical tradition. Tikkanen was profoundly interested in artistic creativity. In his own words, he wanted to study das künstlerische Können , artistic ability, instead of das künstlerische Wollen or artistic will, which was an important theoretical issue in art history in the late 19th century. This starting point led him to the history of style and iconographical research. Along with the Danish art historian, Julius Lange, he was one of the first scholars who began to study the meaning of gestures and postures in art. In my dissertation I have emphasized the importance of Tikkanen s personal art education. I regard it as having influenced both his scholarly argumentation and his working methods. I have also written a short overview of the situation of art history in Finland and in Northern Countries before Tikkanen s time in order to give an idea of his scientific background. My thesis is a critical and historiographical study on J. J. Tikkanen s role in the development of art history and its methodology.

Turun akatemian ensimmäisen talousopin professorin Pehr Kalmin johdolla tarkastettiin vuonna 1757 väitöskirja aiheesta Mitä pappi voi tehdä talouden parantamiseksi? Muutamaa vuotta myöhemmin ilmestyi väitöskirja papiston mahdollisuuksista pastoraalilääketieteen alalla. Molemmat julkaisut käsittelivät papiston yhteiskunnallista tehtävää. Pehr Kalmin mukaan papisto saattoi toiminnallaan näyttää hyvää esimerkkiä seurakuntalaisilleen. Tarkoituksena oli, että säätyläiset, joihin papistokin kuului, olisivat itse kokeilleet tiloillaan uudenlaisia viljelymenetelmiä. Nähdessään pappiensa yritysten onnistuvan, Kalm uskoi talonpoikien seuraavan näiden esimerkkiä. Kalm toivoi, että talonpojat olisivat siten luopuneet valtakunnan taloutta uhkaavista vääränlaisista viljelymenetelmistä. Erityisesti kaskeamisen uskottiin uhkaavan valtakunnan suurinta resurssia, metsiä. Kalmin ajatukset papiston yhteiskunnallisesta tehtävästä perustuivat Johannes Browalliuksen ja Carl Linnæuksen aikaisempiin kirjoituksiin. Ruotsin valtakunta oli menettänyt suurvalta-asemansa Suuressa Pohjan sodassa. Vapaudenajalla poliittisen suurvalta-aseman sijaan ryhdyttiin tavoittelemaan taloudellista valtaa. Aseet taottiin englantilaisen fysiokratismin hengessä auroiksi. Taloudellisen nousun edellytyksenä oli valtakunnan omavaraisuus. Ruotsin uskottiin olevan luonnonvarojensa puolesta poikkeuksellisen rikas maa. Näiden luonnonvarojen selvittäminen edellytti luonnontieteellistä tutkimista. Tämä johti tieteelliseen murrokseen, jonka tuloksena valtakunnantaloudellista hyötyä edistävät luonnontieteet nousivat Carl Linnæuksen ja Kuninkaallisen Tiedeakatemian johdolla kukoistukseen. Luonnontieteisiin kuului myös "jumalainen talousoppi". Taloudelliset uudistukset olivat ennen kaikkea uuden valtiopäiväpuolueen, hattujen ideologian mukaisia. Uutta aatevirtausta voidaan nimittää hyötypatriotismiksi. Pehr Kalm kuului hyötypatrioottien joukkoon. Hänen merkittävin tieteellinen saavutuksensa oli Tiedeakatemian tuella tehty tutkimusmatka Pohjois-Amerikkaan. Matkan tavoitteena oli silkinviljelyn aloittaminen Ruotsissa. Matkan jälkeen Kalm toimi Turun akatemian talousopinprofessorina. Vuonna 1757 hänet vihittiin papiksi. Kalm valitsi papin toimen nähtävästi taloudellisten syiden vuoksi. Kalm sai palkkapitäjästä tarvitsemansa lisätulot. Kalm oli myös Turun tuomiokapitulin jäsen. Kalmilla oli papiston yhteiskunnallisesta tehtävästä selkeä käsitys, joka näkyi paitsi hänen opetuksessaan myös hänen omassa työssään kirkkoherrana. Papin tehtävänä oli valtakunnan taloudellisen hyödyn edistäminen. Tässä mielessä papiston yhteiskunnallinen tehtävä ei lainkaan muuttunut suurvaltakaudelta vapaudenajalle siirryttäessä. This article analyses the results of five Eurobarometer surveys (of 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2005) designed to measure which languages Europeans consider most useful to know. Most Europeans are of the opinion that English is the most useful, followed by French and German. During the last decade the popularity of French and German as useful languages has been decreasing significantly, while English has remained universally favoured as the most useful language. French and German have lost their popularity especially among those who do not speak them as a foreign language. On the other hand, Spanish, Russian and other languages (often these include languages of neighbouring countries, minority languages or a second official language of the country in question) have kept and even increased their former level of popularity. Opinions about useful languages vary according to a respondent’s knowledge of languages, education and profession. This article analyses these differences and discusses their impact on the study of foreign languages and the future of the practice of foreign languages in Europe.
