The objective of my dissertation Pull (or Draught, or Moves) at the Parnassus , is to provide a deeper understanding of Nordic Middle Class radicalism of the 1960 s as featured in Finland-Swedish literature. My approach is cultural materialist in a broad sense; social class is regarded a crucial aspect of the contents and contexts of the novels and literary discussions explored. In the first volume, Middle Class With A Human Face , novels by Christer Kihlman, Jarl Sjöblom, Marianne Alopaeus, and Ulla-Lena Lundberg, respectively, are read from the points of view of place, emotion, and power. The term "cryptotope" is used to designate the hidden places found to play an important role in all of these four narratives. Also, the "chronotope of the provincial small town", described by Mikhail Bakhtin in 1938, is exemplified in Kihlman s satirical novel, as is the chronotope of of war (Algeria, Vietnam) in those of Alopaeus and Lundberg s. All the four novels signal changes in the way general "scripts of emotions", e.g. jealousy, are handled and described. The power relations in the novels are also read, with reference to Michel Foucault. As the protagonists in two of them work as journalists, a critical discussion about media and Bourgeois hegemony is found; the term "repressive legitimation" is created to grasp these patterns of manipulation. The Modernist Debate , part II of the study, concerns a literary discussion between mainly Finland-Swedish authors and critics. Essayist Johannes Salminen (40) provided much of the fuel for the debate in 1963, questioning the relevance to contemporary life of the Finland-Swedish modernist tradition of the 1910 s and 1920 s. In 1965, a group of younger authors and critics, including poet Claes Andersson (28), followed up this critique in a debate taking place mainly in the newspaper Vasabladet. Poets Rabbe Enckell (62), Bo Carpelan (39) and others defended a timeless poetry. This debate is contextualized and the changing literary field is analyzed using concepts provided by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. In the thesis, the historical moment of Middle Class radicalism with a human face is regarded a temporary luxury that new social groups could afford themselves, as long as they were knocking over the statues and symbols of the Old Bourgeoisie. This is not to say that all components of the Sixties strategy have lost their power. Some of them have survived and even grown, others remain latent in the gene bank of utopias, waiting for new moments of change.

The number of immigrant students in vocational education and training is steadily increasing in Finland. This poses challenges for teachers and schools. This research focuses on emerging questions of intercultural learning in the context of immigrant training, and on a method the Culture Laboratory that was developed in an attempt to respond to the challenges. The main methodological and theoretical framework lies in cultural-historical activity theory, developmental work research, and in the concepts of the intercultural and hybridity. The empirical material consists of videotaped recordings of discussions in the Culture Laboratory. The five main research questions focused on the strengths and limitations of the Culture Laboratory as a tool for intercultural learning, the significance of disturbances in it, the potential of suggestions for intercultural learning, paper as a mediating artifact , and the concept of intercultural space. The findings showed that the Culture Laboratory offered a solid background for developing intercultural learning. The disturbances manifested revealed a multitude of scripts and activities. It was also suggested that the structure of expansive learning could start from externalization instead of internalization. The suggestions the participants made opened up a hybrid learning space for intercultural development, and offered a good springboard for new ideas. Learning in Paperland posed both challenges and opportunities for immigrant students, and different paper trails emerged. Intercultural space in the Culture Laboratory was a developmental zone in which a hybrid process of observing, comparing, and creating took place. Objective: Glucocorticoid therapy is used worldwide to treat various inflammatory and immune conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In IBD, 80% of the patients obtain a positive response to the therapy; however the development of glucocorticoid-related side-effects is common. Our aim was therefore to study the possibility of optimizing glucocorticoid therapy in children and adolescents with IBD by measuring circulating glucocorticoid bioactivity (GBA) and serum glucocorticoid-responsive biomarkers in patients receiving steroid treatment for active disease. Methods: A total of sixty-nine paediatric IBD patients from the Paediatric Outpatient Clinics of the University Hospitals of Helsinki and Tampere participated in the studies. Control patients included 101 non-IBD patients and 41 disease controls in remission. In patients with active disease, blood samples were withdrawn before the glucocorticoid therapy was started, at 2-4 weeks after the initiation of the steroid and at 1-month intervals thereafter. Clinical response to glucocorticoid treatment and the development of steroid adverse events was carefully registered. GBA was analyzed with a COS-1 cell bioassay. The measured glucocorticoid therapy-responsive biomarkers included adipocyte-derived adiponectin and leptin, bone turnover-related collagen markers amino-terminal type I procollagen propeptide (PINP) and carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP) as well as insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and inflammatory marker high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Results: The most promising marker for glucocorticoid sensitivity was serum adiponectin that associated with steroid therapy–related adverse events. Serum leptin indicated a similar trend. In contrast, circulating GBA rose in all subjects receiving glucocorticoid treatment but did not associate with the clinical response to steroids or with glucocorticoid therapy-related side-effects. Of notice, young patients (<10 years) showed similar GBA levels than older patients, despite receiving higher weight-adjusted doses of glucocorticoid. Markers of bone formation were lower in children with active IBD than in the control patients, probably reflecting the suppressive effect of the active inflammation. The onset of the glucocorticoid therapy further suppressed bone turnover. Inflammatory marker hs-CRP decreased readily after the initiation of the steroid, however the decrease did not associate with the clinical response to glucocorticoids. Conclusions: This is the first study to show that adipocyte-derived adiponectin associates with steroid therapy-induced side-effects. Further studies are needed, but it is possible that the adiponectin measurement could aid the recognition of glucocorticoid-sensitive patients in the future. GBA and the other markers reflecting glucocorticoid activity in different tissues changed during the treatment, however their change did not correlate with the therapeutic response to steroids or with the development of glucocorticoid-related side effects and therefore cannot guide the therapy in these patients. Studies such as as the present one that combine clinical data with newly developed biomolecular technology are needed to step-by-step build a general picture of the glucocorticoid actions in different tissues.

Late twentieth century Jesus-novels search after a completely new picture of Jesus. Novels written for instance by Norman Mailer, José Saramago, Michèle Roberts, Marianne Fredriksson, and Ki Longfellow provide an inversive revision of the canonic Gospels. They read the New Testament in terms of the present age. In their adaptation the story turns often into a critique of the whole Christian history. The investigated contrast-novels end up with an appropriation that is based on prototypical rewriting. They aim at the rehabilitation of Judas, and some of them make Mary Magdalane the key figure of Christianity. Saramago describes God as a blood thirsty tyrant, and Mailer makes God combat with the Devil in a manichean sense as with an equal. Such ideas are familiar both from poststructuralist philosophy and post-metaphysical death-of-God theology. The main result of the intertextual analysis is that these scholars have adopted Nietzschean ideas in their writing. Quite unlike earlier Jesus-novels, these more recent novels present a revision that produces discontinuity with the original source text, the New Testament. The intertextual strategy is based on contradiction. The reader wittnesses contesting and challenging, the authors attack Biblical beliefs and attempt to dissolve Christian doctrines. An attack on Biblical slave morality and violent concept of God deprives Jesus of his Jewish Messianic identity, makes Old Testament law a contradiction of life, calls sacrificial soteriology a violent pattern supporting oppression, and presents God as a cruel monster who enslaves people under his commandments and wishes their death. The new Jesus-figure contests Mosaic Law, despises orthodox Judaism, abandons Jewish customs and even questions Old Testament monotheism. In result, the novels intentionally transfer Jesus out of Judaism. Furthermore, Jewish faith appears in a negative light. Such an intertextual move is not open anti-Semitism but it cannot avoid attacking Jewish worship. Why? One reason that explains these attitudes is that Western culture still carries anti-Judaic attitudes beneath the surface covered with sentiments of equality and tolerance. Despite the evident post-holocaust consciousness present in the novels, they actually adopt an arrogant and ironical refutation of Jewish beliefs and Old Testament faith. In these novels, Jesus is made a complete opposite and antithesis to Judaism. Key words: Jesus-novel, intertextuality, adaptation, slave morality, Nietzsche, theodicy, patriarchy.
