The aim of the present study was to assess dental health and its determinants among 15-year-olds in Tehran, Iran and to evaluate the impact of a school-based educational intervention on their oral cleanliness and gingival health. The total sample comprised 506 students. Data collection was performed through a clinical dental examination and a self-administered structured questionnaire. This questionnaire covered the student s background information, socio-economic status, self-perceived dental health, tooth-brushing, and smoking. The clinical dental examination covered caries experience, gingival status, dental plaque status, and orthodontic treatment needs. Participation was voluntary, and all students responded to the questionnaire. Only three students refused the clinical dental examination. The intervention was based on exposing students to dental health education through a leaflet and a videotape designed for the present study. The outcome examinations took place 12 weeks after the baseline among the three groups of the intervention trial (leaflet, videotape, and control). High participation rates at the baseline and scanty drop-outs (7%) in the intervention speak for reliability of the results. Mean value of the DMFT (D=decayed, M=missing, and F=filled teeth) index of the 15-year-olds was 2.1, which comprised DT=0.9, MT=0.2, and FT=1.0 with no gender differences. Dental plaque existed on at least one index tooth of all students, and healthy periodontium (Community Periodontal Index=0) was found in less than 10% of students. Need for caries treatment existed in 40% of students, for scaling in 24%, for oral hygiene instructions in all, and for orthodontic treatment in 26%. Students with the highest level of parents education had fewer dental caries (36% vs. 48%) and less dental plaque (77% vs. 88%). Of all students, 78% assessed their dental health as good or better. Even more of those with their DMFT=0 (73% vs. 27%) and DT=0 (68% vs. 32%) assessed their dental health as good or better. Smokers comprised 5% of the boys and 2% of the girls. Smoking was common among students of less-educated parents (6% vs. 3%). Of all students, 26% reported twice-daily tooth-brushing; girls (38% vs. 15%) and those of higher socio-economic background (33% vs. 17%) did so more frequently. The best predictors for a good level of oral cleanliness were female gender or twice-daily tooth-brushing. The present study demonstrated that a school-based educational intervention can be effective in the short term in improving the oral cleanliness and gingival health of adolescents. At least 50% reduction in numbers of teeth with dental plaque compared to baseline was achieved by 58% of the students in the leaflet group, by 37% in the videotape group, and by 10% of the controls. Corresponding figures for gingival bleeding were 72%, 64%, and 30%. For improving the oral cleanliness and gingival health of adolescents in countries such as Iran with a developing oral health system, school-based educational intervention should be established with focus on oral self-care and oral health education messages. Emphasizing the immediate gains from good oral hygiene, such as fresh breath, clean teeth, and attractive appearance should be key aspects for motivating these adolescents to learn and maintain good dental health, whilst in planning school-based dental health intervention, special attention should be given to boys and those with lower socio-economic status. Visual pigments of different animal species must have evolved at some stage to match the prevailing light environments, since all visual functions depend on their ability to absorb available photons and transduce the event into a reliable neural signal. There is a large literature on correlation between the light environment and spectral sensitivity between different fish species. However, little work has been done on evolutionary adaptation between separated populations within species. More generally, little is known about the rate of evolutionary adaptation to changing spectral environments. The objective of this thesis is to illuminate the constraints under which the evolutionary tuning of visual pigments works as evident in: scope, tempo, available molecular routes, and signal/noise trade-offs. Aquatic environments offer Nature s own laboratories for research on visual pigment properties, as naturally occurring light environments offer an enormous range of variation in both spectral composition and intensity. The present thesis focuses on the visual pigments that serve dim-light vision in two groups of model species, teleost fishes and mysid crustaceans. The geographical emphasis is in the brackish Baltic Sea area with its well-known postglacial isolation history and its aquatic fauna of both marine and fresh-water origin. The absorbance spectrum of the (single) dim-light visual pigment were recorded by microspectrophotometry (MSP) in single rods of 26 fish species and single rhabdoms of 8 opossum shrimp populations of the genus Mysis inhabiting marine, brackish or freshwater environments. Additionally, spectral sensitivity was determined from six Mysis populations by electroretinogram (ERG) recording. The rod opsin gene was sequenced in individuals of four allopatric populations of the sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus). Rod opsins of two other goby species were investigated as outgroups for comparison. Rod absorbance spectra of the Baltic subspecies or populations of the primarily marine species herring (Clupea harengus membras), sand goby (P. minutus), and flounder (Platichthys flesus) were long-wavelength-shifted compared to their marine populations. The spectral shifts are consistent with adaptation for improved quantum catch (QC) as well as improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of vision in the Baltic light environment. Since the chromophore of the pigment was pure A1 in all cases, this has apparently been achieved by evolutionary tuning of the opsin visual pigment. By contrast, no opsin-based differences were evident between lake and sea populations of species of fresh-water origin, which can tune their pigment by varying chromophore ratios. A more detailed analysis of differences in absorbance spectra and opsin sequence between and within populations was conducted using the sand goby as model species. Four allopatric populations from the Baltic Sea (B), Swedish west coast (S), English Channel (E), and Adriatic Sea (A) were examined. Rod absorbance spectra, characterized by the wavelength of maximum absorbance (λmax), differed between populations and correlated with differences in the spectral light transmission of the respective water bodies. The greatest λmax shift as well as the greatest opsin sequence difference was between the Baltic and the Adriatic populations. The significant within-population variation of the Baltic λmax values (506-511 nm) was analyzed on the level of individuals and was shown to correlate well with opsin sequence substitutions. The sequences of individuals with λmax at shorter wavelengths were identical to that of the Swedish population, whereas those with λmax at longer wavelengths additionally had substitution F261F/Y in the sixth transmembrane helix of the protein. This substitution (Y261) was also present in the Baltic common gobies and is known to redshift spectra. The tuning mechanism of the long-wavelength type Baltic sand gobies is assumed to be the co-expression of F261 and Y261 in all rods to produce ≈ 5 nm redshift. The polymorphism of the Baltic sand goby population possibly indicates ambiguous selection pressures in the Baltic Sea. The visual pigments of all lake populations of the opossum shrimp (Mysis relicta) were red-shifted by 25 nm compared with all Baltic Sea populations. This is calculated to confer a significant advantage in both QC and SNR in many humus-rich lakes with reddish water. Since only A2 chromophore was present, the differences obviously reflect evolutionary tuning of the visual protein, the opsin. The changes have occurred within the ca. 9000 years that the lakes have been isolated from the Sea after the most recent glaciation. At present, it seems that the mechanism explaining the spectral differences between lake and sea populations is not an amino acid substitution at any other conventional tuning site, but the mechanism is yet to be found.

Lappiin suunnitteilla olevat Pajala–Kolarin rauta- ja Soklin fosforikaivos ovat megaluokan hankkeita. Kaivosten rakentaminen ei voi kuitenkaan toteutua jos niiden tarvitsemia rautatie-, satama- ja tieinvestointeja ei voida toteuttaa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli arvioida näiden väyläinvestointien aluetaloudellisia vaikutuksia. Tutkimus on jatkoa Ruraliassa juuri valmistuneelle yhdeksää Pohjois- ja Itä-Suomen kaivoshanketta koskevalle tutkimukselle, jossa keskitytään itse kaivosinvestointien vaikutuksiin. Tutkimuksen on rahoittanut Liikenne- ja viestintäministeriö yhdessä Työ- ja elinkeinoministeriön kanssa. Työvälineenä oli Ruraliassa kehitetty RegFinDyn-aluemalli. Simuloinnit suoritettiin vuosille 2008–2030 ja raportoitiin Lapin seutukuntien tasolla. Tulosten mukaan kaikki, mutta erityisesti mittavat rautatieinvestoinnit olisivat merkittäviä seutukuntien taloudelliselle kasvulle. Äkäsjoki–Ajos radan rakentaminen auttaisi Tunturi-Lapin, Torniolaakson ja Kemi–Tornion seutukuntia taantuman yli. Taloudellinen kasvu voisi lisääntyä läntisen Lapin seutukunnissa yhteensä 0,6–2,2% vuoteen 2011 ja yhteensä 1,3–4,3% vuoteen 2016 mennessä. Tämä olisi keskimäärin 0,1–0,5% vuodessa. Soklin kaivoksen tapauksessa Kemijärvi–Kelloselkä–Sokli rautatien vaikutukset Itä- ja Pohjois-Lapin seutukuntiin olisivat merkittäviä. Investointien edetessä Itä-Lapin seutukunnan taloudellinen kasvu voisi vahvistua kumulatiivisesti tarkasteltuna 8,3% vuoteen 2013 mennessä. Vuosikeskiarvona tämä olisi 2,8%. Radan vaikutus Pohjois-Lapin taloudelliseen kasvuun olisi pienempi, vuoteen 2014 mennessä yhteensä 3% eli keskimäärin 0,8% vuodessa. Väyläinvestointien työllisyysvaikutukset olisivat myönteisiä. Pajala–Kolarin kaivoksen rautatieinvestoinnit toisivat läntiseen Lappiin uusia työpaikkoja vuoteen 2015 mennessä yhteensä 418. Tästä Tunturi-Lapin osuus olisi 147, Torniolaakson 114 ja Kemi–Tornion seutukunnan 157. Vastaavat vuosikeskiarvot olisivat 52, 18, 14 ja 20. Soklin kaivoksen rautatieinvestoinnit toisivat jonkun verran enemmän uusia työpaikkoja Pajala–Kolariin verrattuna koska investoinnit olisivat suuremmat. Radan rakentaminen voisi tuoda Itä-Lappiin yhteensä 506 uutta työpaikkaa vuoden 2013 loppuun mennessä. Pohjois-Lapin työllisyys voisi lisääntyä 153 uudella työpaikalla. Yhteensä voisi siten syntyä 660 uutta työpaikkaa. Vastaavat vuosikeskiarvot olisivat 169, 51, 220 uutta työpaikkaa. Kun kaivoksia tarkastellaan yhdessä, työllisyysvaikutukset olisivat suurimmat vuonna 2015, jonka loppuun mennessä väyläinvestoinnit voisivat luoda yhteensä 1288 uutta työpaikkaa. Vastaava vuosikeskiarvo olisi 161. Taloudellisen kasvun ohella työllisyystulokset korostavat analysoitujen väyläinvestointien myönteistä aluetaloudellista merkitystä. Ruralia-instituutin arvioinnin perusteella molempien kaivosten rautatie-, satama- ja tieinvestoinnit olisivat toteuttamiskelpoisia aluetaloudellisin perustein. Ne lisäisivät tuotantoa, työllisyyttä, tuloja, kulutusta ja verotuloja useissa Lapin seutukunnissa.

Researchers within the fields of economic geography and organizational management have extensively studied learning and the prerequisites and impediments for knowledge transfer. This paper combines two discourses within the two subjects: the-communities-of-practice and the learning region approaches, merging them through the so-called ecology of knowledge-approach, which is used to examine the knowledge transfer from the House of Fabergé to the Finnish jewellery industry. We examine the pre-revolution St Petersburg jewellery cluster and the post-revolution Helsinki, and the transfer of knowledge between these two locations through the components of communities of people, institutions and industry. The paper shows that the industrial dynamics of the Finnish modern-day goldsmith industry was inherently shaped both through the transfer and the non-transfer of knowledge. It also contends that the “knowledge-economy” is not anchored in and exclusive for the high technology sector of the late 20th century.
