The life history of Phalacrognathus Muelleri (Macleay) (Coleoptera: Lucanidae)

The life history of Phalacrognathus muelleri (Macleay) is described and aspects of its biology discussed. The species is restricted to the wet tropics of northern Queensland where it breeds in rotting wood in rainforest. Larvae have been extracted from the wood of 27 tree species in 13 families. All larvae found were in wood attacked by white rot fungi. The final instar larva is described. Larva, pupa, and parasites are figured.

A review of Taenaris Hubner (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Amathusiinae) in Queensland, together with first Australian records for T. myops kirschi Staudinger and Elymnias agondas melanippe Grose-Smith (Satyrinae).

Species of the amathusiine genus Taenaris Hubner known to occur in Australia, predominantly from Torres Strait, are reviewed and illustrated. T. myops kirschi Staudinger is recorded for the first time in Australia from four male specimens collected on Dauan Island, Torres Strait. A female specimen of the satyrine Elymnias agondas melanippe Grose-Smith also collected from Dauan Island represents the first record of this taxon from Australia. The high degree of variation observed in the external facies of Taenaris from Torres Strait and reliable taxonomic separation of female specimens are discussed. Taenaris-like forms of the papilionid, Papilio aegeus ormenus Guerin-Meneville and E. a. melanippe from Torres Strait and Dauan Island respectively are illustrated and reviewed. The form of P. a. ormenus from Torres Strait that is most similar to Taenaris spp. is identified as form ormenus Guerin-Meneville variety onesimus Hewitson.

Intrapopulation variation in an Australian population of the North American thrips, Bagnalliella yuccae (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae), a new record from Australia.

The genus Bagnalliella Karny is an endemic North American genus of Phlaeothripidae with 7 species associated with the New World plant genus Yucca; 2 Old World species currently placed in the genus are probably not congeneric. The number of sensoria on antennal segments III and IV has been used to distinguish the Bagnalliella species on Yucca, but an invasive population of Bagnalliella yuccae (Hinds) is reported here from Australia, at Brisbane, Queensland, in which the number of sensoria varied between individuals and even between left and right antennae of single individuals. These observations cast considerable doubt on the validity of some of the North American species of Bagnalliella. The Australian population was damaging young leaves of Yucca elephantipes, and indicates the ease with which thrips can be distributed by the horticultural trade.

Thriocerodes anthicides (newman), Comb. N. (Coleoptera: Cleridae): An australian, not South African, species

Corynetes compactus Westwood is recognised as a junior synonym (syn. n.) of Pylus anthicides Newman, which is transferred from the South African genus Thriocera Gorham to the endemic Australian genus Thriocerodes Wolcott & Dybas, resulting in the combination Thriocerodes anthicides (Newman), comb. n.

First record of gynaikothrips uzeu (Zimmermann) (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) from Australia

Gynaikothrips uzeli (Zimmermann) is newly recorded from Queensland, Australia, causing leaf galls on ornamental figs. Gynaikothrips uzeli is considered a pest of Fiats benjamina (Moraceae) (Weeping fig) in southern Asia and America.

Opetiopalpus scutellaris Panzer (Coleoptera: Cleridae: Korynetinae) established in the Western Australian wheatbelt

The status of the exotic clerid beetle Opetiopalpus scutellaris Panzer has been unclear due to the ambiguous nature of the single previous Australian record. Recent pheromone trapping at grain stores in Western Australia indicate that O. scutellaris is locally naturalised within the Western Australian wheatbelt. It is considered likely that the trapped O. scutellaris specimens originated from surrounding areas rather than being directly associated with grain.

Notes on the biology of Sceliodes cordalis (Doubleday) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)

Sceliodes cordalis (Doubleday) is an important pest of eggplant but little is known of its biology. Egg size, oviposition sites, seasonal occurrence and egg parasitism were studied from 2006 to 2008 in the coastal Burnett district of Queensland. Eggs (L:W:H:: 0.716 mm:0.445 mm:0.292 mm) were laid predominantly on the calyx of the fruit but not on flowers. Trichogramma Westwood and Trichogrammatoidea Girault wasps emerged from parasitised eggs. Pheromone traps caught moths throughout the year, with higher catches in spring and summer than in winter and in the presence of eggplant crops. © Entomological Society of Queensland.

Generic relationships of two obscure Australian Thysanoptera species described by A.A. Girault

Two previously unrecognisable species of Australian thrips described by A.A. Girault are placed generically. Giraultithrips gen. n. is described to include G. nigricoxa (Girault), comb, n., originally placed in Bagnalliella Karny and currently included in Haplothrips Amyot & Serville, while Azaleothrips perniger (Girault), comb. n. is transferred from Glyptothrips Hood.

Host specificity studies on Gynaikothrips (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) associated with leaf galls of cultivated Ficus (Rosales: Moraceae) trees

Host specificity tests on Gynaikothrips ficorum (Marchal) and Gynaikothrips uzeli (Zimmerman) (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) have shown that under experimental conditions, G. ficorum will induce leaf galls on both Ficus benjamina L. and Ficus microcarpa L. f. (Rosales: Moraceae), but G. uzeli will induce galls only on F. benjamina. A further interesting aspect of the results is that gall induction by G. uzeli on F. benjamina appears to have been suppressed in the presence of F. microcarpa plants in the same cage. Liothrips takahashii (Moulton) (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae), an inquiline in the galls of these Gynaikothrips, is reported for the first time from Australia, mainland China, Malaysia, Costa Rica, and western USA.
