The project builds on successful industry collaborations in 2008 and 2009 to research key hatchery, production and marketing issues for cobia production in Queensland. Pacific Reef Fisheries and Ecofish International have identified cobia production as long term company goals and see the research and technology transfer in the project as a key part of this development.

The emerging disease program seeks to gain information on the distribution of cereal pathogens\pathotypes and potential for outbreaks across the norther region and options for their control. It is looking for an improved understanding of varietal (APR) reaction to stripe rust (YR) in prevailing weather conditions and in the face of climate change. Replicated field trials are used in the evaluation of varietal, cultural and chemical management of YR. Best management practice packages are disseminated to stake holders, including a YR predictive tool.

The Wambiana grazing trial started in 1997 to test and develop sustainable and profitable grazing strategies to manage for rainfall variability. It is important that this trial continue as the results are still relatively short-term relative to rainfall cycles and significant treatment changes are still occurring. This new proposal will maintain baseline treatments but will modify others based on trial learning’s to date. It builds on treatment differences and evidence collected over the last 12 years to deliver evidence-based guidelines and principles for sustainable and productive management. The trial also links to other projects modelling water quality, climate change, methane emissions and soil C sequestration on grazing lands.

The avocado industry has supported the development and evaluation of new rootstocks for Hass and Shepard avocado. Field sites containing various rootstock/scion combinations have been established around Australia. This project will evaluate tree, fruit yield and and postharvest fruit quality attributes from these field sites.
