Passalora calotropidis has been found for the first time in Australia on rubber bush (Calotropis procera) in northern Queensland where it was associated with a damaging leaf spot disease. Analysis of sequence data of the ITS region indicated that P calotropidis belonged to a group that consisted of species of Pseudocercospora. The generic position of P calotropidis and its potential for biological control are discussed.

Nematospora (Eremothecium) coryli was isolated from Citrus and identified for the first time in Australia. This insect-transmitted yeast was associated with dry rot in cultivated and native Citrus fruits. Although N. coryli is known as a serious seed pathogen of many tropical and sub-tropical plants, evidence is presented that it has been present and undetected in Queensland for at least ninety years.

Biological control of weeds has been carried out in Fiji since 1911, when the seed-fly Ophiomyia lantanae was introduced in an attempt to control Lantana camara. In 1988, the thrips Liothrips mikaniae was introduced from Trinidad into the Solomon Islands in an attempt to undertake biocontrol of Mikania micrantha (mikania) in the Pacific. A small colony of the thrips was subsequently taken from the Solomon Islands to the Kerevat Lowlands Agricultural Experimental Station in New Britain, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Now two decades later and for the first time, a pathogenic rust fungus has been imported for use against mikania, one of Fiji’s and the Pacific’s worst invasive weeds.

Species of the amathusiine genus Taenaris Hubner known to occur in Australia, predominantly from Torres Strait, are reviewed and illustrated. T. myops kirschi Staudinger is recorded for the first time in Australia from four male specimens collected on Dauan Island, Torres Strait. A female specimen of the satyrine Elymnias agondas melanippe Grose-Smith also collected from Dauan Island represents the first record of this taxon from Australia. The high degree of variation observed in the external facies of Taenaris from Torres Strait and reliable taxonomic separation of female specimens are discussed. Taenaris-like forms of the papilionid, Papilio aegeus ormenus Guerin-Meneville and E. a. melanippe from Torres Strait and Dauan Island respectively are illustrated and reviewed. The form of P. a. ormenus from Torres Strait that is most similar to Taenaris spp. is identified as form ormenus Guerin-Meneville variety onesimus Hewitson.

The rust fungus Masseeëlla capparis is reported for the first time in Australia on Flueggea virosa (Phyllanthaceae). This is the first species of Masseeëlla found in Australia. The rust is described and illustrated from Australian specimens. A discussion on species of Masseeëlla is provided. A reconstructed phylogeny with the Large Subunit region of ribosomal DNA indicated that Masseeëlla has an affinity with the Phakopsoraceae.

Fruiting hybrids are reported for the first time between the genera Citrus L. and Citropsis (Engl.) Swing. & M.Kell. Conventional hybridization using the recently described species Citrus wakonai P.I.Forst. & M.W.Sm. and Citropsis gabunensis (Engl.) Swing. & M.Kell. resulted in high rates of fruit set and seed formation. Although seed were only half normal size, over 90% germinated without the need for embryo rescue techniques. Plant losses were high during the first few months but after six months, the 327 surviving hybrids were potted on. These grew vigorously on their own roots and 35 of them flowered within two years of sowing. Plants flowered continuously but all were pollen-sterile and ovaries abscised shortly after petal fall. However, at 25 months, two newly flowering hybrids began setting fruit. The development, identification, morphology, breeding efficiency, and future implications of this unique germplasm are described.

Temnoplectron Westwood is revised and five new species described, four from North Queensland: cooki, finnigani, lewisense, monteithi, one from New Guinea: wareo. Temnoplectron reyi Paulian is removed from synonymy with T. politulum Macleay, Temnoplectron laevigatum Matthews is placed in synonymy with T. boucomonti Paulian, T. heurni Paulian and Z howdeni Paulian are synonymised with Z atropolitum Gillet, and T. major Paulian is recognised in Australia for the first time. All known species are redescribed. A key is provided for the 19 species of Temnoplectron and new distribution records are noted. A cladistic analysis of the genus is presented, the results of which suggest at least two origins for flightlessness in the genus. The biogeography of Temnoplectran is discussed with reference to isolation of rainforest blocks during periods of maximum aridity.

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) and the Queensland Beef Industry Institute (QBII) used the marketing process Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to determine the education needs of beef producers in northern Australia with regards to beef cattle nutrition management. This is the first time that such a process has been conducted in this sector of the industry. 290 producers from across Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia were interviewed. The results of this process provide considerable insights into issues of concern to northern producers in terms of beef cattle nutrition and how education, extension and research organisations can ensure that they meet the needs of their target audience. Two isolates of Haemophilus paragallinarum were obtained from a layer chicken in Mexico. The isolates were confirmed as H. paragallinarum by polymerase chain reaction and conventional biochemical identification. The isolates were nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) independent—growing on blood agar without the need of a nurse colony as well as on a complex medium that lacked both NAD and chicken serum. Both isolates were pathogenic, causing the typical clinical signs of infectious coryza in susceptible chickens. One isolate was Page serovar B/Kume serovar B-1 and the other isolate was Page serovar C/Kume serovar C-2. The isolates were associated with a field outbreak that involved an egg drop of 20% over a 3 wk period and a doubling of weekly mortality (from 0.1% to 0.2%). This is the first report of NAD-independent H. paragallinarum outside South Africa and is the first time that NADindependent H. paragallinarum of serovar B has been reported. Abbreviations: NAD ¼ nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide; NAM ¼ nicotinamide; PCR ¼ polymerase chain reaction; TM ¼ complete growth medium without chicken serum or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide; TM/SN ¼ complete growth medium that contains both chicken serum and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide

Using the mycelial reactions of 435 combinations of 14 Fusarium pseudograminearum and 15 F. graminearum isolates, it was demonstrated for the first time that mycelial reactions/barrage formation cannot be clearly used to distinguish F. graminearum and F. pseudograminearum. Mutually compatible isolates produced very different patterns of compatibility with other isolates. However, about 60% of pairings between F. graminearum and F. pseudograminearum isolates were compatible, indicating common ancestry. The Mantel tests used to determine any possible associations between mycelial compatibility reactions and AFLP genotypic diversity data revealed no association between the two systems in either species. In addition, no association was found between mycelial compatibility reactions and sexual reproduction in the two species. Implications of the higher frequency of mycelial compatibility reactions observed in F. pseudograminearum than in F. graminearum are discussed.
