In the dry tropics of northern Australia heifers are generally weaned mid-year at about six months of age and experience two dry seasons and a wet season prior to first mating at 2 years of age when only 60% are likely to conceive (Entwistle 19830. Pre-mating liveweight (PMLW) explains much of the variation in conception rate, but year effects explain further variations (Rudder et al 1985).

A strategy comprising a winter/spring protein supplement, rumen modifier and hormonal growth promotant (Compudose 400) was used in either the first year (Tl), second year (T2), or in both years (T1+2) following weaning in Brahman cross steers as a means of increasing liveweight gain up to 2.5 years of age. T2 produced the heaviest final liveweight (544.7 kg) and highest overall liveweight gain (366.7 kg), but these were not significantly different from T1 (538.6 kg; 360.9 kg), or T1+2 (528.7 kg; 349.3 kg). However, final liveweight and overall liveweight gains of T1 and T2 but not T1+2 were significantly greater than for untreated (C) steers (504.9 kg; 325.2 kg, both P < 0.05). Regardless of the strategy imposed, liveweight and liveweight gain were enhanced, however final liveweights in each treatment were below the preferred minimum target liveweight (570-580 kg) for premium export markets. The variation in liveweight gain in grazing beef cattle as influenced by pasture type, season and year effects has important economic implications for mixed crop-livestock systems and the ability to better predict such variation would benefit beef producers by providing a guide for decision making. To identify key determinants of liveweight change of Brahman-cross steers grazing subtropical pastures, measurements of pasture quality and quantity, and diet quality in parallel with liveweight were made over two consecutive grazing seasons (48 and 46 weeks, respectively), on mixed Clitoria ternatea/grass, Stylosanthes seabrana/grass and grass swards (grass being a mixture of Bothriochloa insculpta cv. Bisset, Dichanthium sericeum and Panicum maximum var. trichoglume cv. Petrie). Steers grazing the legume-based pastures had the highest growth rate and gained between 64 and 142 kg more than those grazing the grass pastures in under 12 months. Using an exponential model, green leaf mass, green leaf %, adjusted green leaf % (adjusted for inedible woody legume stems), faecal near infrared reflectance spectroscopy predictions of diet crude protein and diet dry matter digestibility, accounted for 77, 74, 80, 63 and 60%, respectively, of the variation in daily weight gain when data were pooled across pasture types and grazing seasons. The standard error of the regressions indicated that 95% prediction intervals were large (+/- 0.42-0.64 kg/head.day) suggesting that derived regression relationships have limited practical application for accurately estimating growth rate. In this study, animal factors, especially compensatory growth effects, appeared to have a major influence on growth rate in relation to pasture and diet attributes. It was concluded that predictions of growth rate based only on pasture or diet attributes are unlikely to be accurate or reliable. Nevertheless, key pasture attributes such as green leaf mass and green leaf% provide a robust indication of what proportion of the potential growth rate of the grazing animals can be achieved.

The objective of this study was to gain an understanding for drying sawn timber produced from fast-grown, well-managed Queensland hardwood plantations using accelerated drying methods. Due to limited resources, this was a preliminary study and further work will be required to optimize schedules for industrial implementation. Three conventional kiln trials, including two for 38-mm-thick, 19-year-old plantation Gympie messmate (Eucalyptus cloeziana F. Muell.) and one for 25mm thick, 15-year-old plantation red mahogany (Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell.), and two vacuum kiln drying trials, one each for 38- and 25mm thick Gympie messmate, were conducted. Measurements of final cross-sectional moisture content, moisture content gradient, residual drying stress, and internal and surface checking were used to quantify dried quality. Drying schedules were chosen based on either existing published schedules or, in the case of the vacuum drying trials, existing schedules for species with similar wood density and dying degrade properties, or manipulated schedules based on the results of trials conducted during this study. The findings indicate that both species can be dried using conventional drying techniques with acceptable grade quality in approximately 75 percent of the drying time that industry is currently achieving when drying native forest timber of the same species. The vacuum drying time was 60 percent less than conventional drying for 38-mm-thick, 19-year-old Gympie messmate, although drying quality needs improving. The findings have shown that through careful schedule manipulation and adjustment, the grade quality can be optimized to suit the desired expectation. Additional research is required to further optimize the schedules to ensure acceptable grade qualities can be reliably achieved across all drying criteria and exploit opportunities to reduce drying times further.

The endemic non-pathogenic Australian rabbit calicivirus RCV-A1 is known to provide some cross protection to lethal infection with the closely related Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV). Despite its obvious negative impacts on viral biocontrol of introduced European rabbits in Australia, little is known about the extent and mechanisms of this cross protection. In this study 46 rabbits from a colony naturally infected with RCV-A1 were exposed to RHDV. Survival rates and survival times did not correlate with titres of serum antibodies specific to RCV-A1 or cross reacting to RHDV, but were instead influenced by the time between infection with the two viruses, demonstrating for the first time that the cross protection to lethal RHDV infection is transient. These findings are an important step towards a better understanding of the complex interactions of co-occurring pathogenic and non-pathogenic lagoviruses.
