Accurate identification of pests is essential for practically all aspects of agricultural development and is critical to the operations of biosecurity that safeguard agricultural integrity and facilitate trade. Diagnostic capability is at the forefront of and complementary to, activities such as border protection, incursion management, surveillance and pest and disease certification. The efficiency of a biosecurity system therefore depends largely on the feedback between these activities and diagnostics. Australian scientists will train Thai scientists in diagnostics and surveillance to provide the Thai DOA with skills that will aid in the development of a Thai Diagnostic Network. The skills will be taught using a range of pests, including some which have particular biosecurity importance for both Australia and Thailand such as citrus canker, potato viruses and fruit flies.

Developing sorghum varieties with increased lodging resistance has repeatedly been identified as a high priority issue by the Research Advisory Committees for the Northern Region Grains Industry. It is estimated that every third year about 20 to 30% of the area planted to sorghum is affected by lodging. Calculated on the gross value of grain sorghum produced, estimated by DEEDI forecasts of $265m for 2008-09 that could equate to a loss of gross value of production of around $50m in such a year. We intend to submit an eConcept to GRDC for funding for a detailed physiological study addressing this problem.

The emerging disease program seeks to gain information on the distribution of cereal pathogens\pathotypes and potential for outbreaks across the norther region and options for their control. It is looking for an improved understanding of varietal (APR) reaction to stripe rust (YR) in prevailing weather conditions and in the face of climate change. Replicated field trials are used in the evaluation of varietal, cultural and chemical management of YR. Best management practice packages are disseminated to stake holders, including a YR predictive tool.

Broadscale irrigation is a major land use in many of the priority neighbourhood catchments (45,218 hectares in Central Highlands and Dawson) and there is a requirement to provide technical support to sub-regional group field officers and landholders in these priority catchments. This technical support will assist field staff and land managers to identify and implement appropriate, sustainable technologies and management practices.
