The purpose of the report is to summarise progress in developing vegetable production systems with improved soil health that overcome soil limitations with the potential to suppress soil borne diseases. Management approaches to soil health improvement were regionally specific to overcome regional soil limitations in different production environments.

Imperial mandarin is the dominant variety in the early season production time slot in Australia. It is well known to consumers, wholesalers and supermarkets, and growers continue to make new plantings of this variety. Despite this popularity, Imperial has major faults that cause problems for growers, consumers, and at other points along the supply chain. Fruit of the variety can be severely granulated, and this is the main quality problem cited by consumers. A second problem with Imperial is its unsuitability for export. Thirdly, the variety has low juice and sugar content, and develops poor colour under warm conditions. We propose a hybridisation project to specifically address these industry obstacles.

This project is to identify treatments that ginger growers can use to control two serious soil-borne pathogens that have emerged and threaten the viability of the ginger industry. Pythium myriotylum, responsible for a severe rhizome rot, is the more serious of the two. It was first identified by ginger growers in the 2007/08 growing season, with some producers reporting total crop losses in some blocks. Symphylids are wingless soil-inhabiting arthropods that feed on the ginger plant's root tips and impair the plants´ ability to absorb nutrients, seriously restricting plant growth and development. Damage caused by symphylids to ginger roots is also expected to facilitate entry of Pythium into the plant.

This project investigates the impact of vegetable production systems on sensitive waterways focusing on the risk of off-site nutrient movement at farm block scale under current management practices. The project establishes a series of case studies in two environmentally important Queensland catchments and conducts a broader survey of partial nutrient budgets across tropical vegetable production. It will deliver tools to growers that can improve fertiliser use efficiency delivering profitability and environmental improvements.

Demonstrating environmental performance and sustainability is a strategic priority for the Australian banana industry. Development, delivery and uptake of an EMS will allow the industry to demonstrate this. It will maintain community confidence in the Australian banana industry and its commitment to careful environmental management and the protection of key Australian icons like the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics and ensure the industry’s right to farm, now and in the future.

The most important vegetable crops grown in Indonesia, and particularly lowland coastal production, are the true shallot and chilli. These crops are usually grown in rotation with rice but are far more valuable crops and are increasingly in high demand. They offer an opportunity for small farmers to generate extra income, increase farm profitability and shift away from subsistence production. However, the yield and profitability of shallot and chilli production is severely limited by a range of agronomic constraints. This project aims towards raising the productivity of allium (shallot and garlic) and chilli/capsicum cropping systems. The methodology will include a benchmarking survey and review of grower practices. This will be supplemented with physical surveys of crops for disease incidence and efficiency of fertiliser use. Once surveys are completed in Indonesia and the important pathogens identified, recommendations can be made for disease management. This will include review of chemical usage in Indonesia and Australia to provide best management guidelines for the application of insecticides, fungicides and other chemicals.

This project aims to address the growing need for a coordinated approach to research into the biological control of Australian eucalypt insect pests by scoping the formation of a Centre in Australia which would (a) coordinate the evaluation and provision of biological control agents (initially to South Africa and Brazil, but in future years more widely), (b) research the role natural enemies play in pest population regulation in Australian eucalypt plantations and how this may be enhanced as a management tool, and (c) form a network focussed on forest biosecurity with an emphasis on eucalypt pests and pathogens.

This project focussed on the phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) status of northern cropping soils. Stores of P and K have been depleted by crop removal and limited fertiliser application, with depletion most significant in the subsoil. Soil testing strategies are confounded by slowly available mineral reserves with uncertain availability. The utility of new soil tests was assessed to measure these reserves, their availability to plants quantified and a regional sampling strategy undertaken to identify areas of greatest P and K deficit. Fertiliser application strategies for P and K have been tested and the interactions between these and other nutrients have been determined in a large field program.

This project employed a participatory development and extension (D&E) approach involving on-farm trials and capacity- building activities to improve the economic and environmental performance of grain and mixed farming enterprises in central Queensland (CQ). The project's activities delivered (1) enhanced knowledge and understanding of key system variables that underpin grain and mixed farming businesses, and parameter values for these variables in relation to a range of environmental and management factors, (2) new and refined practices, technologies and management strategies to sustain the profitability of cropping and (3) products and information to support continuous improvement in farm business performance.
