Selma's saga [1916-1948]

The memoirs were written in 1982 in Sydney, Australia and include excerpts of letters from various relatives during the years 1938-1941. Early childhood recollections of World War One. The family was living in the 6th district of Vienna. Description of domestic life with maids, laundresses and a French governess. Death of her mother in 1918. Trip with her stepmother Ida Plohn to Prague. Recollections of a stay in the countryside at their maid's family, where Selma and her older sister Martha awaited the birth of their younger sister Trude. Memories of Christmas celebrations. Summer vacations in the mountains. Description of the extended family. Inflation and economic depression in the 1920s. Strict upbringing by her stepmother. Children recreation trip to Grado, Italy in 1925. Selma was accepted at the "Bundeserziehungsanstalt" for gifted students. Only few fellow Jewish students. Religious education with beloved rabbi Diamant. Recovery from tonsilitis in a senatorium in Aflenz, Austria. Celebration of Jewish holidays and visits at the Synagogue on Yom Kippur. Transfer to Realschule. Due to a sudden onset of various illnesses Selma was unable to continue school and had put an end to her father's dream of an university education for her. Difficult to find a position in the depression times of the early 1930s. Only few working options for a Jewish woman. Position as a secretary in a Jewish firm. Outings in the Vienna Woods. Membership in the Zionist group Betar.

Herbert B. Ehrmann papers, 1913-1970.

Contains correspondence, addresses and speeches, newspaper clippings, and published material relating primarily to Ehrmann's activity in the national and Boston chapter of the American Jewish Committee (1935-1970). Of special interest is material on the relation of the Committee to the American Jewish Conference (1943-1948), the relationship of American Jewry to the State of Israel, and the attitude of the Committee to the establishment of Israel. Also contains genealogical material, in German and in English, between Ehrmann and his relatives in Poland immediately prior World War II, and in Italy immediately after the war. Also contains letters and reports sent by Mrs. Sara Rosenfeld Ehrmann (b. 1895) by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and the United Jewish Appeal, dealing primarily with fund-raising matters.

Dewey Stone papers, 1916-1983.

Contains papers and photos including correspondence and other materials relating to work as Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Palestine (and Israel), as National Chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, as a leading campaigner for Israel Bonds, and as co-founder of and Chairman of the Board of the Weizmann Institute of Science; 2 texts of radio broadcasts made in 1948 informing America about the Israeli war for independence and the new Israeli republic; a list of military equipment supplied by Mr. Stone to Israel in 1948; letters and biographical material relating both to pressure applied by Mr. Stone and others on Pres. Truman to recognize and support the new Jewish state and to Mr. Stone's financial support of Truman's campaign and the Democratic Party in 1948; materials on associations with Boston University (including the dedication of the Dewey D. and Harry K. Stone Science Building), and the Truman Library; tributes and awards; biographical material; memorials; misc. speeches, presentations, and essays; misc. press clippings; and various photographs. Among the correspondents are: Chaim Weizmann, Vera Weizmann, Abba Eban, David Ben Gurion, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, the Rothschilds, Hubert Humphrey, Adlai E. National Council of Jewish Women, New York Section records, undated, 1895-2004.

These records document New York Section’s early history to the present, representing a significant portion of its work in community programming and advocacy, as well as its supporting administrative, fundraising, membership, and public relations activities. As a section of the National Council, its records also include a substantial amount of material regarding the National Organization’s programs, events, publications, and reports, dating from 1896 through 1999.

Uriah P. Levy collection undated, 1787-1948, 1959, 1961, 1985, 2005.

Contains the notebook and correspondence of Abram Kanof relating to the naval career and activities of Uriah P. Levy; the correspondence, memoranda, newspaper clippings, and a manuscript paper of Isaac Markens pertaining to the alleged claim that Levy was instrumental in abolishing flogging in the Navy; personal documents including a letter to Captain E.A.F. Lavalette concerning the behavior of officers under Levy's command as commodore of the Mediterranean fleet (1859), a photostatic copy of his will and the inventory of his estate (1862), and published material by and about Uriah Phillips Levy including a bound typewritten copy of "Record of Naval Court of Inquiry, 1857;" An essay on flogging in the Navy, 1849; Memorial of Uriah P. Levy, ... 1855; an original copy of a Manual of rules for men-of-war by Captain U.P. Levy, 1862; and Monticello and its preservation, since Jefferson's death, 1862-1902, by George Alfred Townsend. Also contains the halitza of Virginia Lopez Levy, widow of Uriah P. Levy, 1866, signed by J.J. Lyons; copies of letters of Michael Levy to Henry Deering and Dudley Woolridge, 1787-1788, and a published copy of The defense of Captain Jonas P. Levy. Gift, in part, of the Elsie O. and Philip D. Gross Family Collection 1874-1895

The collection contains the marriage contract of the merchant Lazarus Gross and Carla Hecht from 1874. Also included is a ‘Zeugnisbüchlein’ - school certificates – from Badische Volksschule for their daughter, Meta Gross (1888-1895).
