A supramolecular complex Zn-2[Cl2H8N2](2)[C28H2OS4O16][H2O](17.7) (1), has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions, and characterized by IR spectroscopy, TG and DTA analysis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Unprecedented (H2O)(10) water clusters consisting of cyclic pentamer (H2O)(5) and five dangling water molecules were observed in the lattice.

Two new Cull coordination polymers, namely [Cu-2(BDC)(2)(L)(4)(H2O)(2)]center dot 14H(2)O (1) and [Cu-1.5(BTC)(L)(1.5)(H2O)(0.5)]center dot 2H(2)O (2), where L = 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole), BDC = 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate, and BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate, have been synthesized at room temperature. Complex 1 exhibits an unusual, square-planar, four-connected 2D (2)(6)4 net, which has been predicated by Wells. Interestingly, three types of water clusters, namely (H2O)(6), (H2O)(8), and (H2O)(10), are observed in the hydrogen-bonded layers constructed by the BDC ligands and water molecules. The BTC anion in compound 2 is coordinated to the Cu" cation as tetradentate ligand to form a (6(6))(2)(4(2)6(4)8(4))(2)(6(4)810) net containing three kinds of nonequivalent points, Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and IR spectra for 1 and 2 are also discussed in detail.

Multiphoton ionization of the hydrogen, bonded pyrrole-water clusters (C4H5N)(n)(H2O)(m) is studied with a reflectron-time of flight mass spectrometer at 355 mn. With increasing partial concentration of pyrrole in a gas mixture source, a series of poly-pyrrole-water binary-mixed cluster ions can be observed, including unprotonated cluster ions [(C4H5N)(x)(H2O)(y)](+), protonated cluster ions [(C4H5N)(x)(H2O)(y)](+) and dehydrogenated cluster ions [(C4H4N)(C4H5N)(x)(H2O)(y)](+). Ab initio calculations of their structures, bond strengths, charge distributions and reaction energies are carried out. Stable structures of these clusters are obtained from the calculations. A probable formation mechanism of the cluster ions [(C4H5N)(x)(H2O)(y)](+), [(C4H5N)(x)(H2O)(y)]H+ and [(C4H4N)(C4H5N)(x) (H2O)(y)](+) is supposed to be the ionization of clusters followed by dissociation.

The reaction of Cu(BF4)(2) with pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (H(2)pydc) and trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) under hydrothermal conditions afforded a porous mixed-valence (CuCuII)-Cu-I coordination polymer. Coexistence of tetrameric and decameric water clusters within the channels of the complex leads to a novel water chain. The metal-organic framework provides both hydrophilic and hydrophobic environments for stabilizing the clusters and retains its integrity upon dehydration and rehydration.

A novel self-assembled layer consisting of water tetramers and nitrate anions has been observed in the [Co(1,10-phenanthroline)(2)(NO3)]center dot(NO)(3)center dot 4H(2)O complex. X-ray crystallography and FT-IR spectroscopy indicate that although the water tetramers exist in an energetically less stable uudd configuration, the anionic host environments may play an important role in the formation and stabilization of the water clusters.

In this paper, four novel silver(I) sulfonate coordination polymers containing neutral ligands, namely, [Ag(2)Ll (biim)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (1). AgL2(biim) (2), [Ag(HL3)(Pic)(2)]center dot H2O (3), and [Ag-3(L3)(HL3)(4,4'-bipy)(3)(H2O)(2)]center dot 4H(2)O (4), have been synthesized [L1 = 3-carboxy-4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate, L2 = p-aminobenzenesulfonate, H(2)L3 = p-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid, biim = 1,1'-(1.4-butanediyl)-bis(imidazole), Pic = beta-picoline, 4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine]. For compounds 1 and 2, Ag(I) cations are bridged by biim ligands to form a one-dimensional (1D) "zigzag" chain, and L1 and L2 sulfonate ligands are not coordinated to the silver cation. Compound 3 has a dimeric structure in which two silver cations are bridged by two HL3 ligands. For compound 4, L3 ligand coordinates to a silver cation as a monodentate ligand, and Ag(l) cations are bridged by 4,4'-bipy ligands to form a ID chain. Compound 1 contains water dimers, while compound 4 contains water trimers. Compounds 1-3 display room-temperature photoluminescence.

Multiphoton ionization of binary mixed clusters (C5H5N)(x)-(H2O)(y) at 532, 355 and 266 nm laser wavelengths has been investigated using TOF mass spectrometer. The experiments showed that almost all the products were protonated ions, At 532 and 355 nm, the products were mainly protonated pyridine clusters (C5H5N)(n)-H+, while at 266 nm, mixed binary cluster ions (C5H5N)(m)- (H2O)(n)-H+ appeared. It was found that the abundance of the [(C5H5N)(3)-H2O-H](+) ions was abnormally high. The calculation indicated that the ion [(C5H5N)(3)-H2O-H](+) is Of a kind of magic number structures with C-3v symmetry. A stepwise reaction mechanism is suggested that photoionization is followed by dissociation. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The purpose of the research is to study the seasonal succession of protozoa community and the effect of water quality on the protozoa community to characterize biochemical processes occurring at a eutrophic Lake Donghu, a large shallow lake in Wuhan City, China. Samples of protozoa communities were obtained monthly at three stations by PFU (polyurethane foam unit) method over a year. Synchronously, water samples also were taken from the stations for the water chemical quality analysis. Six major variables were examined in a principal component analysis (PCA), which indicate the fast changes of water quality in this station I and less within-year variation and a comparatively stable water quality in stations II and III. The community data were analyzed using multivariate techniques, and we show that clusters are rather mixed and poorly separated, suggesting that the community structure is changing gradually, giving a slight merging of clusters form the summer to the autumn and the autumn to the winter. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to infer the relationship between water quality variables and phytoplankton community structure, which changed substantially over the survey period. From the analysis of cluster and CCA, coupled by community pollution value (CPV), it is concluded that the key factors driving the change in protozoa community composition in Lake Donghu was water qualities rather than seasons. Monodispersed ZnS and Eu3+-doped ZnS nanocrystals have been prepared through the co-precipitation reaction of inorganic precursors ZnCl2, EuCl3, and Na2S in a water/methanol binary solution. The mean particle sizes are about 3-5 nm. The structures of the as-prepared ZnS nanoparticles are cubic (zinc blende) as demonstrated by an x-ray powder diffraction. Photoluminescence studies showed a stable room temperature emission in the visible spectrum region for all the samples, with a broadening in the emission band and, in particular, a partially overlapped twin peak in the Eu3+-doped ZnS nanocrystals. The experimental results also indicated that Eu3+-doped ZnS nanocrystals, prepared by controlling synthetic conditions, were stable. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

This paper reports the syntheses, crystal structures, and luminescent and magnetic properties of four tetranuclear Tb-III (1 and 3) and Dy-III (2 and 4) complexes supported by p-phenylthiacalix[4]arene (H(4)PTC4A) and p-tert-butylthiacalix-[4]arene (H(4)TC4A). All four frameworks can be formulated as [Ln(4)(III)(PTC4A/TC4A)(2)(mu(4)-OH)Cl-3(CH3OH)(2)(H2O)(3)], and some methanol and water solvent molecules are occupied in the interstices. The compounds are featured with a sandwichlike unit constructed by two tail-to-tail calixarene molecules and a planar tetragonal (mu(4)-OH)Ln(4) cluster. The photoluminescent analyses suggest that there is an efficient ligand-to-Ln(III) energy transfer for compounds 1-3 and H(4)PTC4A is a more efficient "antenna" than H(4)TC4A.

In this work,we report the application of novel, water-soluble fluorescent Ag clusters in fluorescent sensors for detecting cysteine, an important biological analyte. The fluorescence of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA)templated Ag clusters was found to be quenched effectively by cysteine, but not when the other alpha-amino acids were present. By virtue of the specific response, a new, simple, and sensitive fluorescent method for detecting cysteine has been developed based on Ag clusters. The present assay allows for the selective determination of cysteine in the range of 2.5 x 10(-8) to 6.0 x 10(-6) M with a detection limit of 20 nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. Based on the absorption and fluorescence studies, we suggested that cysteine quenched the emission by the thiol-adsorption-accelerated oxidation of the emissive Ag clusters. The present study shows a promising step toward the application of silver clusters, a new class of attractive fluorescence probes.
