Two kinds of novel macrocyclic aryl thioether ether oligomers were synthesized by nucleophilic condensation reaction in high yields under pseudo-high-dilution condition. A combination of H-1 NMR, GPC and MALDI-TOF MS analyses unambiguously confirmed the cyclic nature and their distributions, Macrocyclic thioether ether ketone oligomers can undergo facile melt ring opening polymerization(ROP) initiated by thiyl radical to give a high molecular weight polymer.

Novel macrocyclic aryl thioether ester oligomers have been synthesized in high yield from phthaloyl dichloride and 4,4'-thiodiphenol under pseudo high dilution conditions. The cyclic nature was unambiguously confirmed by a combination of MALDI-TOF MS, gel permeation chromatography and NMR analyses. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction of cyclic ester dimer reveals no severe strain on the cyclic structure. The free-radical ring opening polymerization (ROP) of the macrocyclic oligomers was achieved to give high molecular weight polymers via a transthioetherification reaction. The molecular weight of the polymer resulting from ROP decreases as the conversion of cyclic oligomers increases after a polymerization period of 30 min.

Two kinds of macrocyclic oligomers containing aromatic sulfide linkages have been synthesized by the solution polycondensation in high yield. The cyclic compounds were characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR, by and MALDI - TOF MS.

In this work, we report a simple approach for controllable synthesis of one-dimensional (ID) gold nanoparticle (AuNP) assemblies in solution. In the presence of divalent metallic ions, poly(acrylic acid)-1-dodecanethiol-stabilized AuNPs (PAA-DDT@AuNPs) are found to form I D assemblies in aqueous solution by an ion-templated chelation process; this causes an easily measurable change in the absorption spectrum of the particles. The assemblies are very stable and remain suspended in solution for more than one month without significant aggregation.

A new methodology is described for the one-step aqueous preparation of highly monodisperse gold nanoparticles with diameters below 5 nm using thioether- and thiol-functionalized polymer ligands. The particle size and size distribution was controlled by subtle variation of the polymer structure. It was shown that poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) were the most effective stabilizing polymers in the group studied and that relatively low molar mass ligands (similar to 2500 g/mol) gave rise to the narrowest particle size distributions. Particle uniformity and colloidal stability to changes in ionic strength and pH were strongly affected by the hydrophobicity of the ligand end group. "Multidentate" thiol-terminated ligands were produced by employing dithiols and tetrathiols as chain-transfer agents, and these ligands gave rise to particles with unprecedented control over particle size and enhanced colloidal stability. It was found throughout that dynamic light scattering (DLS) is a very useful corroboratory technique for characterization of these gold nanoparticles in addition to optical spectroscopy and TEM.

A series of 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octakis(alkyl-thio)tetraazaporphyrins (H(2)OATTAP) with different alkyl chain lengths have been synthesized. Cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry have been used to investigate the effect of the controlled lengths of the eight peripheral thioether tails on the redox behavior of the molecules. The electrochemical reduction of octakis(hexyl-thio)tetraazaporphyrins, MOHTTAP (where M = Cu, Ni), was studied in 1,2-dichloroethane at a platinum electrode. The Cu derivative was oxidized in one single-electron-transfer step to yield a pi-cation radical and reduced in three single-electron-transfer steps to yield a pi-anion radical, dianion and trianion, respectively. For the Ni derivative, electron transfer reactions involving both the central metal atom and the macrocyclic ring were observed. Electron transfer pathways are proposed based upon voltammetric and in situ spectroelectrochemical results.

Phenolphthalein based polyarylate macrocyclic oligomers were selectively synthesized by an interfacial polycondensation reaction of o-phthaloyl dichloride with phenolphthalein. The high selectivity benefits from the role of phenolphthalein as a color indicator, an efficient phase transfer catalyst, acid a preferred conformation of the starting materials as indicated by analyzing a single-crystal X-ray structure of an analogous macrocycle. The melt ROP of phenolphthalein polyarylate cyclic dimer was studied using nucleophilic initiators, The molecular weight of the resulting polymers builds up very rapidly at the very early stage of polymerization but decreases with time. During the ROP of cyclic dimer, analogous macrocycles with higher degree of polymerization (n greater than or equal to 3) and linear oligomers were produced by backbiting reaction especially at later stage of polymerization. Conversion of cyclic dimer is very fast at the earlier stage of polymerization and then increases slowly with time as analyzed by gel permeation chromatography. However, the total amount of cyclic oligomers in the ROP system increases with time at the later stage of polymerization because of the formation of larger macrocycles. The resulting polymers are amorphous. Glass transition temperatures (T(g)s) of these polymers are influenced by the polymerization time, type of initiator, and initiator concentration.

The characterization of free base porphyrin 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octakis(hexyl-thio) tetraazaporphyrin (H(2)OHTTAP) and its zinc(II) complexes [Zn(II)OHTTAP] containing eight thioether groups at the beta -pyrrole positions of the macrocycle was reported. Results obtained by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry indicated a five-electron reduction in five steps for each complex. They were oxidized in two single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -cation radicals and dications and reduced in three single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -anion radicals, dianions and trianions, respectively. The redox property of H(2)OHTTAP was unusual as compared to porphyrins (PPs) and phthalocyanines (Pcs). Each process was monitored by in situ thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry, which indicated that only the Ligand was electroactive. The existence of the eight hexylthio groups was responsible for the intrastack interactions and enhanced intracolumnar and intercolumnar electron motions, resulting in improved conductivity. This experimental study examines the role of formulated molecular weight between crosslink sites on the temperature resistance and mechanical properties of composites based on a polyimide containing a diphenyl thioether unit (PTI). The composites are fabricated by in situ polymerization of monomer reactants (PMR) using three monomeric ingredients: bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) sulfide dianhydride (TDPA); 4,4'-methylene dianiline (MDA); and the monomethyl ester of norbornene anhydride (NE). By changing monomeric molar ratio, three formulations are prepared, in which formulated molecular weight between crosslink sites varies from 1487 to 3446 g mol(-1). Unidirectional composite laminates from each formulation and T300 carbon fibres are compression moulded and cut into a series of test specimens. By measuring the glass transition temperature (T-g), Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (G(IC)) and other mechanical properties at room and elevated temperatures, the influences of formulated molecular weight on the temperature resistance and mechanical properties of PTI-based composites are investigated.
