In order to understand how mandibular structure differs among the Chinese cercopithecoids (Rhinopithecus, Trachypithecus and Macaca), particularly the uniqueness of the snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus), we analysed ten mandibular measurements by principal components analysis (PCA), and examined scaling patterns. The results provided by the PCA illustrated differences due to size among the cercopithecoids and the relationship between colobines (Trachypithecus and Rhinopithecus) and cercopithecines, in which macaques (Macaca) are included. Allometric analysis indicated that, biomechanically, there is not a marked difference between macaques and leaf-eating monkeys. This may be associated with the fact that both share some similar ecology and niches in south and southwest China. The snub-nosed monkeys exhibit a significantly more robust mandible, evident in the symphysis, corpus, condyle, and masticatory momentum arm. This supports the hypothesis, based on the study of dental structure, that Rhinopithecus is a unique group in Asian Old World monkeys (OWMs) and has developed some unique characteristics in order to adapt to the tough food available in the severe cold climate of the Plateaux of Qinghai-Tibet, Yun-Gui and Qingling in China.

A theoretical model for the electronic structure of porous Si is presented. Three geometries of porous Si (wire with square cross section, pore with square cross section, and pore with circular cross section) along both the [001] and [110] directions are considered. It is found that the confinement geometry affects decisively the ordering of conduction-band states. Due to the quantum confinement effect, there is a mixing between the bulk X and GAMMA states, resulting in finite optical transition matrix elements, but smaller than the usual direct transition matrix elements by a factor of 10(-3). We found that the strengths of optical transitions are sensitive to the geometry of the structure. For (001) porous Si the structure with circular pores has much stronger optical transitions compared to the other two structures and it may play an important role in the observed luminescence. For this structure the energy difference between the direct and the indirect conduction-band minima is very small. Thus it is possible to observe photoluminescence from the indirect minimum at room temperature. For (110) porous Si of similar size of cross section the energy gap is smaller than that of (001) porous Si. The optical transitions for all three structures of (110) porous Si tend to be much stronger along the axis than perpendicular to the axis.

MEP is a member of thioester-containing protein (TEP) family found in Zhikong scallop Chlamys farreri and is involved in innate immunity against invading microbes. In the present study, the genomic DNA of CfTEP was cloned and characterized. The genomic DNA sequence of CfTEP consisted of 40 exons and 39 introns spanning 35 kb with all exon-intron junction sequences agreeing with the GT/AG consensus. The genomic organization of CfTEP was similar to human and mouse 0 rather than ciona C3-1 and Drosophila dTEP2. By RT-PCR technique, seven different cDNA variants of CfTEP (designated as CfTEP-A-CfTEP-G) were cloned from scallop gonad. CfTEP-A-CfTEP-F were produced by alternative splicing of six mutually exclusive exons (exons 19-24), respectively, which encoded the highly variable central region. While in CfTEP-G, the deletion of all the six exons introduced a new translation stop site and might trigger nonsense mediated decay (NMD). The mRNA expression and the proportion of the seven CfTEP variant transcripts were examined in the gonad of scallops after bacterial challenge. The fragments containing the highly variable central region of UTEP were amplified by RT-PCR and a 100 positive clones were sequenced randomly. The expression profiles of the seven MEP variants were different and displayed the sex and bacteria dependent manner. In the blank, sea water and Listonella anguillarum challenged subgroups of male scallops, all the transcripts detected were CfTEP-G isoform. In the Micrococcus luteus challenged subgroup, the isoforms expressed and their proportions were CfTEP-F (54%), CfTEP-B (23%), CfTEP-A (10%), CfTEP-C (7%) and CfTEP-E (6%). However, in the gonad of female scallops, only CfTEP-A were found in blank and sea water challenged subgroups. After L anguillarum or M. luteus challenge, four and five isoforms were detected, respectively, with CfTEP-F isoform being the most one in the both subgroups. These results suggested that the evolution of TEP genes was very complex, and that the diverse CfTEP transcripts generated by alternative splicing played an important role as pattern recognition receptors in the innate immune defense of scallops. In this paper, the cellular structure of a two-dimensional detonation wave in a low pressure H2/O2/Ar mixture calculated with a detailed chemical reaction model, high order scheme and high resolution grids is investigated. The regular cellular structure is produced about 1 ms after introducing perturbations in the reaction zone of a steady one-dimensional detonation wave. It is found from the present resolution study that the discrepancies concerning the structure type arising from the coarser grid employed can be resolved using a sufficiently fine grid size of 0.05 mm and below and shows a double-Mach-like strong-type configuration. During the structure evolution process, the structure configuration does not change much in the periods before and after the triple point collision. Through the triple point collision, three regular collision processes are observed and are followed by a quick change to the double-Mach-like configuration. The simulated structure tracks show that there are three different tracks associated with different triple points or the kink on the transverse wave. Comparisons with previous work and experiments indicate the presence of a strong structure for an ordinary detonation.

Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) moire method was used to study the surface structure of three kinds of butterfly wings: Papilio maackii Menetries, Euploea midamus (Linnaeus), and Stichophthalma how-qua (Westwood). Gratings composed of curves with different orientations were found on scales. The planar characteristics of gratings and some other planar features of the surface structure of these wings were revealed, respectively, in terms of virtual strain. Experimental results demonstrate that SEM moire method is a simple, nonlocal, economical, effective technique for determining which grating exists on one whole scale, measuring the dimension and the whole planar structural character of the grating on each scale, as well as characterizing the relationship between gratings on different scales of each butterfly wing. Thus, the SEM moire method is a useful tool to assist with characterizing the structure of butterfly wings and explaining their excellent properties. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

We discuss the transversal heteroclinic cycle formed by hyperbolic periodic pointes of diffeomorphism on the differential manifold. We point out that every possible kind of transversal heteroclinic cycle has the Smalehorse property and the unstable manifolds of hyperbolic periodic points have the closure relation mutually. Therefore the strange attractor may be the closure of unstable manifolds of a countable number of hyperbolic periodic points. The Henon mapping is used as an example to show that the conclusion is reasonable.

Introduction The strange chaotic attractor (ACS) is an important subject in the nonlinear field. On the basis of the theory of transversal heteroclinic cycles, it is suggested that the strange attractor is the closure of the unstable manifolds of countable infinite hyperbolic periodic points. From this point of view some nonlinear phenomena are explained reasonably.

By means of the matched asymptotic expansion method with one-time scale analysis we have shown that the inviscid geostrophic vortex solution represents our leading solution away from the vortex. Near the vortex there is a viscous core structure, with the length scale O(a). In the core the viscous stresses (or turbulent stresses) are important, the variations of the velocity and the equivalent height are finite and dependent of time. It also has been shown that the leading inner solutions of the core structure are the same for two different time scales of S/(ghoo)1/2 and S/a (ghoo)1/2. Within the accuracy of O(a) the velocity of a geostrophic vortex center is equal to the velocity of the local background flow, where the vortex is located, in the absence of the vortex. Some numerical examples demonstrate the contributions of these results.

The magnetospheric structure of a pulsar is discussed for a non-force-free magnetic field. The local solution to the axisymmetric equations of the pulsar is obtained by the method of expanding in the polar angle. Particular attention is given to the solutions near the polar axis and the equator. Near the pulsar surface, the magnetic field energy density is found to be larger than the other energy components; the gravitational potential and the kinetic energy are relatively larger far away from the pulsar surface. It is shown that these relations influence the mass distribution in the pulsar magnetosphere. The results also show that the plasma rotation may be nonrigid and, hence, that a corotational region with a closed magnetic field may not exist.

A study on the layer structure of W/C multilayers deposited by magnetron sputtering is reported. In the study, soft x-ray resonant reflectivity and hard x-ray grazing incidence reflectivity of the W/C multilayers were measured. The imperfections at the interface such as interdiffusion and formation of compounds were dealt with by two methods. On analyzing the experimental results, we found that the incorporation of an interlayer was a more suitable method than the traditional statistical method to describe the layer structure of a W/C system we fabricated. The optical constants of each layer at a wavelength of 4.48 nm were also obtained from the analysis. Copyright (C) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) was used to analyse the genetic structure of 45 individuals of Gymnocypris przewalskii (Kessler, 1876), an endangered and state-protected rare fish species, from three areas [the Heima (HM), Buha (BH) and Shaliu rivers (SL), all draining into Qinghai Lake]. A total of 563 polymorphic loci were detected. The HM, BH and SL populations have 435, 433 and 391 loci, respectively (Zhu and Wu, 1975), which account for 77.26%, 76.91% and 69.45% of the total number of polymorphic loci of each population, respectively. The Nei indices of genetic diversities (H) of the three populations were calculated to be 0.2869 (HM), 0.2884 (BH) and 0.2663 (SL), respectively. Their Shannon informative indices are 0.4244, 0.4251 and 0.3915, respectively. Research results show that the mean genetic distance between HM and BH is the smallest (0.0511), between BH and SL is the second shortest (0.0608), and between HM and SL is the largest (0.0713), with the mean genetic distance among the three populations being over 0.05. Data mentioned above indicate that the three populations have a certain genetic differentiation. The total genetic diversity (H-t = 0.3045) and the mean value of genetic diversity within the population (H-s = 0.2786) indicate that the variations have mainly come from within the population.

Field electron emission (FE) from an ultrathin multilayer planar cold cathode (UMPC) including a quantum well structure has been both experimentally and theoretically investigated. We found that by tuning the energy levels of UMPC, the FE characteristic can be evidently improved, which is unexplained by conventional FE mechanism. FE emission mechanism, dependent on the quantum structure effect, which supplies a favorable location of electron emission and enhances tunneling ability, has been presented to expound the notable amelioration. An approximate formula, brought forward, can predict the quantum FE enhancement, in which the theoretical prediction is close to the experimental result. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Based on the effective-mass model, the lower energies of the electron and the hole of ZnO/MgxZn1-xO superlattices are calculated. Because of the mismatch of the lattice constant between the ZnO well and the MgxZn1-xO barrier, piezoelectric and spontaneous polarization exist in ZnO/MgxZn1-xO superlattices and a macroscopical internal electric held is found when well width L-w >4 nm and Mg concentration x > 0.2. The parameters of ZnO/MgxZn1-xO superlattices such as lattice constant, band offset, etc. are also proposed. Through calculations, we found the internal electric field can change the lowest energies of the electron and hole to 105.4 and 85.1 meV when well width L-w up to 70 angstrom, which will influence the electronic and optical properties of ZnO/MgxZn1-xO superlattices greatly, while the Rashba effect from the internal electric field is so small that it can be neglected. The ground state exciton energies with different Mg concentration x are also calculated by variational method, our results are very close to the experimental results when Mg concentration x <= 0.3.
