Carbonaceous deposits formed during the temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) of methane dehydro-aromatization (MDA) over Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts have been investigated by TPH, TPCO2 and TPO, in combination with thermal gravimetric analysis (TG). The TPO profiles of the coked catalyst after TPSR of MDA show two temperature peaks: one is at about 776 K and the other at about 865 K. The succeeding TPH experiments only resulted in the diminishing of the area of the high-temperature peak, and had no effect on the area of the low-temperature peak. On the other hand, the TPO profiles of the coked catalyst after succeeding TPCO2 experiments exhibited obvious reduction in the areas of both the high-and low-temperature peaks, particularly in the area of the low-temperature peak. On the basis of TPSR, TPR and TPCO2 experiments and the corresponding TG analysis, quantitative analysis of the coke and the kinetics of its burning-off process have been studied. Sapphire crystals, 140 mm in diameter and 90 turn in height, have been grown by temperature gradient techniques (TGT). The growth direction of the boule was fixed by means of Lane X-ray diffraction. A prominent 204 nm absorption band in TGT-Al2O3. which does not appear in single crystals grown by Czochralski method has been studied. Analysis further substantiates the F-center model of this band. Two relatively weaker bands absorbing at 232 nm and 254 nm were ascribed to F+ centers. F-type centers concentration was determined using Smakula's equation. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Color centers and impurity defects of Ce:YAG crystals grown in reduction atmosphere by temperature gradient techniques have been investigated by means of gamma irradiation and thermal treatments. Four absorption bands associated with color centers or impurity defects at 235, 255, 294 and 370 nm were observed in as-grown crystals. Changes in optical intensity of the 235 and 370 nm bands after gamma irradiation indicate that they are associated with F+-type color center. Charge state change processes of Fe3+ impurity and Ce3+ ions take place in the irradiation process. The variations of Ce3+ ions concentration clearly indicate that Ce4+ ions exist in Ce:YAG crystals and gamma irradiations could increase the concentration of Ce3+ ions. Annealing treatments and the changes in optical density suggest that a heterovalent impurity ion associated with the 294 nm band seems to be present in the crystals. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Yb: YAG (Yb: Y3Al5O12) crystals have been grown by temperature-gradient techniques (TGT) and their color centers and impurity defects were investigated by means of gamma irradiations and thermal treatment. Two color centers located at 255 and 290 nm were observed in the as-grown TGT-Yb: YAG. Analysis shows that the 255 nm band may be associated with Fe3+ ions. Absorption intensity changes of the 290 nm band after gamma irradiation and thermal treatment indicate that this band may be associated with oxygen-vacancy defects. A multistream reactor for high-throughput examining the surface acidity by NH3-TPD method by application of multistream mass spectrometer screening (MSMSS) technique has been developed. This method allows for examining the surface acidity of 10 catalyst samples in about 6 h, which is an improvement over the traditional process. The demonstration of the feasibility of high-throughput TPD can be significant in convincing the hardened traditionalists in the heterogeneous catalysis community that, combinatorial methods indeed should have an important place in scientific catalyst research and development. The developed method could also be used for almost all the temperature-programmed analysis theoretically with careful designed multistream reactors. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A method has been developed for peak identification of PCBs in GC with ECD detection under different temperature programs and isothermal conditions on two commonly used columns (DB-5 and DB-1701). This was achieved by means of accurate calibration of retention times based on the concept of the relative retention index P-i and retention times of the selected PCB internal standards. The P-i was calculated from the predicted retention times with the database of the retention parameters (A, B) and the migration equations. Through comparison of the calibrated and experimental retention times of PCBs in technical samples, it was shown that the developed method was effective for correct PCB comprehensive, quantitative, congener-specific (CQCS) analyses.

A numerical approach has been developed for the correlation of retention limes (total retention lime) with temperature in gas chromatography, which allows the calculation of retention parameters including retention index from data acquired under two or more different temperature program conditions. By using this procedure the optimization of temperature condition can be further achieved, especially when a temperature-programmed run is the most suitable mode in the preliminary development of an analytical method for the analysis of an unknown sample.

Various carbonaceous deposits are formed during the course of methane dehydro-aromatization (MDA) under non-oxidative conditions on Mo/MCM-22 catalysts. These carbon species were investigated by various temperature-programmed techniques such as TPH and TPCO2, combining with TPO and TGA results in order to reveal their chemical nature and determine their amounts. The TPO profiles recorded from coked Mo/MCM-22 catalysts show two temperature peaks: one at about 756 K and the other at about 876 K. The coke amounts related to these two peaks were determined on the basis of the corresponding corrected and deconvoluted TPO profiles, combining with the TGA profiles concerned.
