The rising time of the excitonic luminescence in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells is studied as a function of the well width. For well thickness below approximately 20 Angstrom, we find an increase of rising time with decreasing well width. We explain the dependence of the rising time on well width in very thin quantum wells by the slow-down energy relaxation and/or exciton migration processes due to the decrease of the scattering rate of the exciton-acoustic-phonon interaction. The rapid carrier capture and relaxation processes in InAs/GaAs quantum dots were studied at 77K by using a simple degenerate pump-probe technique. A rising process was observed in the transient reflectivity, following the initial fast relaxation associated with GaAs bulk matrix, and this rising process was assigned to be related to the carrier capture from the GaAs barriers to InAs layers. The assignment was modeled using Kramers-Kronig relation. By analyzing the rising process observed in the transient reflectivity, the carrier capture time constants were obtained. The measured capture times decrease with the increase of carrier concentration.

Ultrasonic absorption coefficients were measured for butylamine in heavy water (D2O) in the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz and at concentrations from 0.0278 to 2.5170 mol dm(-3) at 25 degrees C; two kinds of relaxation processes were observed. One was found in relatively dilute solutions (up to 0.5 mol dm(-3)), which was attributed to the hydrolysis of butylamine. In order to compare the results, absorption measurements were also carried out in light water (H2O). The rate and thermodynamic parameters were determined from the concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency and the maximum absorption per wavelength. The isotope effects on the diffusion-controlled reaction were estimated and the stability of the intermediate of the hydrolysis was considered while comparing it with the results for propylamine in H2O and D2O. Another relaxation process was observed at concentrations greater than 1 mol dm(-3) in D2O. In order to examine the solution characteristics, proton NMR measurements for butylamine were also carried out in D2O. The chemical shifts for the gamma- and delta-proton in butylamine molecule indicate the existence of an aggregate. From profiles of the concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency and the maximum absorption per wavelength of sound absorption, the source of the relaxation was attributed to an association-dissociation reaction, perhaps, associated with a hydrophobic interaction. The aggregation number, the forward and reverse rate constants and the standard volume change of the reaction were determined. It was concluded from a comparison with the results in H2O that the hydrophobic interaction of butylamine in D2O is stronger than that in H2O. Also, the isotope effect on this reaction was interpreted in terms of the solvent structure.

The developments of physical aging in phenolphthalein poly(aryl-ether-ketone) (PEK-C) and poly(aryl-ether-sulfone) (PES-C) with time at two aging temperatures up to 20 K below their respective glass transition temperatures (T-g = 495 and 520 K) have been studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Substantial relaxation within the aging course of several hours were observed by detecting T-g decreasing during physical aging process at the two aging temperatures. The relaxation processes of both polymers are extremely nonlinear and self-retarding. The time dependencies of their enthalpies during the initial stages of annealing were approximately modeled using the Narayanaswamy-Tool model. The structure relaxation parameters obtained from this fitting were used to predict the possibility of physical aging occurring at their respective using temperatures. The femtosecond pump-probe technique was used to study the carrier dynamics of amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 films. With carrier density at around 10(20)-10(21) cm(-3), carriers were excited within 1 ps and recovered to the initial state for less than 3 ns. On the picosecond time scale, the carrier relaxation consists of two components: a fast process within 5 ps and a slow process after 5 ps. The relaxation time of the fast component is a function of carrier density, which increases from 1.9 to 4.3 ps for the carrier density changing from 9.7x10(20) cm(-3) to 3.1x10(21) cm(-3). A possible interpretation of the relaxation processes is elucidated. In the first 5 ps the relaxation process is dominated by an intraband carrier relaxation and the carrier trapping. It is followed by a recombination process of trapped carriers at later delay time. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Using the Huang-Zhu model [K. Huang and B.-F. Zhu, Phys. Rev. B 38, 13377 (1988)] for the optical phonons and associated carrier-phonon interactions in semiconductor superlattices, the effects of longitudinal electric field on the energy-loss rates (ELRs) of hot carriers as well as on the hot-phonon effect (HPE) in GaAs/AlAs quantum wells (QWs) are studied systematically. Contributions of various bulklike and interface phonons to the hot-carrier relaxation are compared in detail, and comprehensively analyzed in relation to the intrasubband and intersubband scatterings for quantum cascade lasers. Due to the broken parity of the electron (hole) states in the electric field, the bulklike modes with antisymmetric potentials are allowed in the intrasubband relaxation processes, as well as the modes with symmetric potentials. As the interface phonon scattering is strong only in narrow wells, in which the electric field affects the electron (hole) states little, the ELRs of hot carriers through the interface phonon scattering are not sensitive to the electric field. The HPE on the hot-carrier relaxation process in the medium and wide wells is reduced by the electric field. The influence of the electric field on the hot-phonon effect in quantum cascade lasers is negligible. When the HPE is ignored, the ELRs of hot electrons in wide QWs are decreased noticeably by the electric field, but slightly increased by the field when considering the HPE. In contrast with the electrons, the ELRs of hot holes in wide wells are increased by the field, irrespective of the HPE. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

We demonstrate that the carrier capture and relaxation processes in InAs/GaAs quantum dots can be detected by a simple degenerate pump-probe technique. We have observed a rising process in the transient reflectivity, following the initial fast relaxation in a GaAs matrix, and assigned this rising process to the carrier capture from the GaAs barriers to the InAs layers. The assignment was modeled using the Kramers-Kronig relations. The capture time was found to depend strongly on the InAs layer thickness as well as on the excitation density and photon energy. The Charpy impact fracture behaviour of unnotched specimens of phenolphthalein polyether ketone (PEK-C) was studied over a temperature range from room temperature to 220 degrees C by using an instrumented impact tester. The load-time and energy-time curves of PEK-C at different temperatures were recorded. From these curves, some important parameters, such as the maximum impact load, the maximum stress, the total impact energy, the crack initiation energy, the crack propagation energy etc., were obtained and their temperature dependences of PEK-C were investigated. The point of 100 percent maximum load on the load-time trace was shown to be the yield point. Two parameters, the ductile ratio (D.R.) and the ductility index (D.I.) were applied to characterize the ductility of PEK-C and their relationships to the relaxation processes were discussed.

The Izod impact fracture behaviour of notched specimens of phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK-C) has been studied over a temperature range from room temperature to 240 degrees C by using an instrumented impact tester. The temperature dependence of the maximum load, total impact energy, initiation energy, propagation energy, ductility index (DI) and the relationships between these parameters and the relaxation processes have been investigated.

Phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK-C) was tested using an instrumented impact tester to determine the temperature effect on the fracture toughness K-c and critical strain energy release rate G(c). Two different mechanisms, namely the relaxation processes and thermal blunting of the crack tip were used to explain the temperature effect on the fracture toughness. Examination of the fracture surfaces revealed the presence of crack growth bands. It is suggested that these bands are the consequence of variations in crack growth along crazes that are formed in the crack tip stress field. As the crack propagates, the stress is relaxed locally, decreasing the growth rate allowing a new bundle of crazes to nucleate along which the crack advances.

It is assumed that both translational and rotational nonequilibrium cross-relaxations play a role simultaneoulsy in low pressure supersonic cw HF chemical laser amplifier. For two-type models of gas flow medium with laminar and turbulent flow diffusion mixing, the expressions of saturated gain spectrum are derived respectively, and the numerical calculations are performed as well. The numerical results show that turbulent flow diffusion mixing model is in the best agreement with the experimental result.
