A method of computing the ambiguity function (AF) for a circularly symmetric pupil function is presented. The AFs of a clear aperture and two shaded apertures are considered in detail and an explicit expression for the first of these AFs is given. We explain these results in the context of the well-known optical transfer function theory and show a primary application of these computations. A good analytic approximation is also introduced, providing an alternative method for calculating the AF, in a simpler way.

We have proposed a new confocal readout system which is based on the combination of two N-zone circular phase-only transverse superresolving pupils to improve transverse superresolution. The procedure for designing such an improved system is presented. Results of comparisons between the performance of the proposed system and the transverse superresolving pupils indicate that with the same Strehl ratio the former has much higher transverse superresolution capacity and significantly lower sidelobe intensity. In laser applications, resolutions beyond the diffraction limit can be obtained with a thin film of strong optical nonlinear effect. The optical index of the silicon thin film is modified with the incident laser beam as a function of the local field intensity n(r) similar to E-2(r). For ultrathin films of thickness d << lambda the transmitted light through the film forms a profile of annular rings. Therefore, the device can be related to the realization of super-resolution with annular pupils. Theoretical analysis shows that the focused light spot appears significantly reduced in comparison with the diffraction limit that is determined by the laser wavelength and the numerical aperture of the converging lens. Analysis on the additional optical transfer function due to the thin film confirms that the resolving power is improved in the high spatial frequency region. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The subjects under two different educational conditions were presented with a multidimensional discrimination task. Their responses were analyzed in terms of nine strategy components, scores on which were analyzed by means of cluster analysis. In combination with the cluster analysis, the qualitative analysis was used to analyze the development of primary school pupils' strategies of artificial concept formation. The results indicate that: (1) Different strategies used by pupils have different influence on their artificial concept formation; (2) The pupils of grade 2 tend to use stimulus-preference and stimulus-describing strategies, while the pupils of grade 4、6 tend to use dimension-checking and focusing strategies to form artificial concepts; (3) Under the different educational conditions, there is a significant difference between the pupils of grade 2 and grade 4, while no significant difference between the pupils of grade 6; and (4) The strategy components change in a complicated manner in the development of the primary school pupils' strategy. With the development of cognitive strategies, some components' scores increase while some increase at first, and then decrease rapidly.
