Bacteriorhodopsin (BR) films oriented by an electrophoretic method are deposited on a transparent conductive ITO glass. A counterelectrode of copper and gelose gel is used to compose a sandwich-type photodetector with the structure of ITO/BR film/gelose gel/Cu. A single 30-ps laser pulse and a mode-locked pulse train are respectively used to excite the BR photodetector. The ultrafast failing edge and the bipolar response signal are measured by the digital oscilloscope under seven different time ranges. Marquardt nonlinear least squares fitting is used to fit all the experimental data and a good fitting equation is found to describe the kinetic process of the photoelectric signal. Data fitting resolves six exponential components that can be assigned to a seven-step BR photocycle model: BR-->K-->KL-->L-->M-->N-->O-->BR. Comparing tests of the BR photodetector with a 100-ps Si PIN photodiode demonstrates that this type of BIR photocletector has at least 100-ps response time and can also serve as a fast photoelectric switch. The behaviors of double proton transfer (DPT) occurring in a representative glycinamide-formamidine complex have been investigated employing the B3LYP/6-311++G** level of theory. Computational results suggest that the participation of a formamidine molecule favors the proceeding of the proton transfer (PT) for glycinamide compared with that without mediator-assisted case. The DPT process proceeds with a concerted mechanism rather than a stepwise one since no zwitterionic complexes have been located during the DPT process. The barrier heights are 14.4 and 3.9 kcal/mol for the forward and reverse directions, respectively. However, both of them have been reduced by 3.1 and 2.9 kcal/mol to 11.3 and 1.0 kcal/mol with further inclusion of zero-point vibrational energy (ZPVE) corrections, where the lower reverse barrier height implies that the reverse reaction should proceed easily at any temperature of biological importance. Additionally, the one-electron oxidation process for the double H-bonded glycinamide-formamidine complex has also been investigated. The oxidated product is characterized by a distonic radical cation due to the fact that one-electron oxidation takes place on glycinamide fragment and a proton has been transferred from glycinamide to formamidine fragment spontaneously. As a result, the vertical and adiabatic ionization potentials for the neutral double H-bonded complex have been determined to be about 8.46 and 7.73 eV, respectively, where both of them have been reduced by about 0.79 and 0.87 eV relative to those of isolated glycinamide due to the formation of the intermolecular H-bond with formamidine. Finally, the differences between model system and adenine-thymine base pair have been discussed briefly.

The multiphoton ionization of the hydrogen-bonding cluster pyridazine-methanol (C4H4N2-CH3OH) was studied using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer at the wavelengths of 355 and 532 nm. At both wavelengths, a series of protonated C4H4N2-(CH3OH)(n)-H+ cluster ions were obtained. Relevant ab initio calculations were performed with HF and B3LYP methods. Equilibrium geometries of both neutral and ionic C4H4N2-CH3OH clusters, and dissociation channels and dissociation energies of ionic clusters, are presented. The results show that when C4H4N2-CH3OH is vertically ionized, C4H4N2H+ and CH3O are the dominant products via proton transfer reaction. A high energy barrier makes another channel corresponding to the production of C4H4N2H+ and CH2OH disfavored. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A blue organic light-emitting device based on an emissive layer of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (HOXD), which exhibits excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), was presented. The device had a luminance efficiency of 0.8 cd/A and a maximum brightness of 870 cd/m(2). Our studies indicate that some EL may originate from the triplet excitation state of the enol form of HOXD.

We report a blue organic light-emitting device having an emissive layer of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (HOXD), that exhibits excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). The device had a luminance efficiency of 0.8 cd/A and a maximum brightness of 870 cd/m(2). Electroluminescence spectra revealed a dominating peak at 450 nm and two additional peaks at 480 and 515 nm with a full width at half maximum of 50 nm. Our studies indicate that some EL may originate from the triplet excitation state of the enol form of HOXD.

Facilitated proton transfer across the water/1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) interface supported on the tips of micro- and nano-pipets by o-phenanthroline (Phen) was studied by using cyclic voltammetry. The formed micro- and nano-liquid/liquid interfaces functioned as micro- and nano-electrodes under certain experimental conditions. The dependence of the half-wave potentials on the aqueous solutions acidities was studied and the ratio of association constants between Phen and proton in the aqueous and DCE phases was calculated by the method proposed by Matsuda et al.. The standard rate constant (k(0)) and the transfer coefficient (alpha) evaluated by using nano-pipets were equal to 0.183 +/- 0.054 cm/s and 0.70 +/- 0.09, respectively.

Ultrasonic absorption coefficients for ethylamine in heavy water (D2O) and in light water (H2O) have been measured in the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz at 25 degrees C. A single relaxational process has been observed in these two kinds of solutions. From the concentration dependence of the ultrasonic relaxation parameters, and following the reaction mechanism proposed by Eigen et al. for ethylamine in H2O, the causes of the relaxations have been attributed to a perturbation of an equilibrium associated with a deuteron or proton transfer reaction. The rate and equilibrium constants have been estimated from deuterioxide or hydroxide ion concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency, and the kinetic isotope effects have been determined. In addition, the standard volume changes of the reactions have been calculated from the concentration dependence of the maximum absorption per wavelength, and the adiabatic compressibility has also been determined from the density and sound velocity for ethylamine in D2O and in H2O, respectively. These results are compared with those for propylamine and butylamine and are discussed in relation to the different kinetic properties between D2O and H2O, the reaction radii derived by Debye theory, and the structural properties of the reaction intermediate.

Ultrasonic absorption coefficients were measured for butylamine in heavy water (D2O) in the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz and at concentrations from 0.0278 to 2.5170 mol dm(-3) at 25 degrees C; two kinds of relaxation processes were observed. One was found in relatively dilute solutions (up to 0.5 mol dm(-3)), which was attributed to the hydrolysis of butylamine. In order to compare the results, absorption measurements were also carried out in light water (H2O). The rate and thermodynamic parameters were determined from the concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency and the maximum absorption per wavelength. The isotope effects on the diffusion-controlled reaction were estimated and the stability of the intermediate of the hydrolysis was considered while comparing it with the results for propylamine in H2O and D2O. Another relaxation process was observed at concentrations greater than 1 mol dm(-3) in D2O. In order to examine the solution characteristics, proton NMR measurements for butylamine were also carried out in D2O. The chemical shifts for the gamma- and delta-proton in butylamine molecule indicate the existence of an aggregate. From profiles of the concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency and the maximum absorption per wavelength of sound absorption, the source of the relaxation was attributed to an association-dissociation reaction, perhaps, associated with a hydrophobic interaction. The aggregation number, the forward and reverse rate constants and the standard volume change of the reaction were determined. It was concluded from a comparison with the results in H2O that the hydrophobic interaction of butylamine in D2O is stronger than that in H2O. Also, the isotope effect on this reaction was interpreted in terms of the solvent structure.

The electron impact mass spectrum (EIMS) of 3-phenyl-1-butyn-3-ol was reported in this paper. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) was used to study the gas phase ion structure of [C8H7](+) formed by the fragmentation of ionized 3-phenyl-1-butyn-3-ol, and that it has the same structure as m/z 103 ions generated by cinnamic acid and alpha-methylstyrene. Deuterium labelling, metastable ion (MI) and CID experimental results indicate the formation of m/z 103 ion resulting from molecular ion of 3-phenyl-1-butyn-3-ol, which is a stepwise procedure via twice proton transfers, rather than concerted process during the successive elimination of methyl radical and neutral carbon monoxide accompanying hydrogen transfer. Moreover, in order to rationalized these fragmentation processes, the bimolecular proton bound complex between benzyne and acetylene intermediate has been proposed.

Electrochemical behavior of the transfer of H+ across polypyrrole membrane (PPM) was studied. The transfer process was quasi-reversible and mainly diffusion-controlled. PPM electropolymerized in water solution has better reversibility than that in CH3CN solution for the transfer of H+. The transfer process of H+ across the two kinds of PPM indicated that the PPM electrochemically polymerized was of asymmetry.

Propylamine has been selected to investigate the isotope effect of a fast deuteron transfer reaction by ultrasonic relaxation method. Ultrasonic absorption coefficients of propylamine in heavy water (D2O) at 25 degrees C in the concentration range from 0.0107 to 0.6300 mol dm(-3) have been measured by pulse and resonance methods over the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz. A Debye-type single relaxation absorption has been observed in the solution. From the dependence of the ultrasonic relaxation parameters on the concentration and solution pH, the source of the observed relaxation has been attributed to a perturbation of the chemical equilibrium associated with the deuteron transfer reaction. The rate and equilibrium constants have been determined by the measurement of the deuteroxyl ion concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency. Also the standard volume change of the reaction has been determined from the concentration dependence of the maximum absorption per wavelength and the adiabatic compressibility has been calculated from the density and the sound velocity in the solution. These results have then been compared with those obtained for propylamine in light water (H2O). The forward rate constant is greater and the reverse rate constant is smaller in DO than in H2O. The standard volume change for deuteron transfer is greater than that for proton transfer reaction, and the adiabatic compressibility shows a similar trend. These data support an argument that there exists a stronger hydrogen bond in D2O than in H2O. The difference of the stability in the intermediate states, R-ND3+... OD- and R-NH3+... OH-, has also been considered from the results of the isotope effects.

Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of buckminsterfullerene (C-60) with the ion systems generated from the self-chemical-ionization of alkyl methyl ethers(CH3OCnH2n+1, n =2 , 3, 4) were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. The adduct cation [C60C2H5O](+) and protonated molecular ion [C60H](+) were observed as the major products, The former was produced by the reactions.of C-60 with the methoxymethyl ion [CH3O = CH2](+) , the latter corresponded to the proton transfer reactions from the protonated alkyl methyl ethers to C60 It is suggested that the [3+2] cycloadduct is the most favorable structure among the probable isomers with special chemical properties, Our investigation provides the guidance for the synthesis of this compound in condensed phase.
