Five, novel, meso-tetra[4-(3,4,5-trialkoxybenzoate)phenyl]porphyrins and their metal complexes were synthesized and their molecular structures were confirmed by H-1 NMR, FTIR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Mesomorphic studies using DSC, polarizing optical microscope and X-ray diffraction revealed that all compounds exhibited thermotropic columnar mesophases over a wide mesophase temperature range and low liquid crystalline-crystal line transition temperature. The use of biofilms as nanostructure-engineering materials is discussed and exemplified using ZnO nanorods. Three examples are presented for illustration, the immobilization of ZnO-nanorod arrays on the inner wall of a polystyrene centrifuge tube using S. thermophilus, the morphological organization of ZnO "filters" using S. thermophilus. And the design and implementation of a ZnO-decorated Ag framework using E. coli.

A series of coil-rod-coil triblock copolymers (i.e., F3T8EO8, F3T8EO17, F3T8EO45, and F3T8EO125) with a mesogenic monodisperse conjugated oligomer comprising 3 fluorene, 8 thiophene, and 2 phenyl units as the rod and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as the coil were synthesized. A reference compound, that is F3T8ME2, with the identical rod but without PEO was also prepared for comparison. The volume fraction of PEO (f(PEO)) was 0, 0.16, 0.28, 0.50, and 0.73 for F3T8ME2, F3T8EO8, F3T8EO17, F3T8EO45, and F3T8EO125, respectively. It was found that the introduction of PEO into the triblock copolymers encouraged the formation of H-type aggregation and f(PEO)-dependent highly ordered mesophases while f(PEO) < 0.73. For F3T8ME2, only nematic mesophase was observed. In contrast, F3T8EO8 and F3T8EO17, with f(PEO) of 0.16 and 0.28, respectively, are smectic A (SA) mesomorphism.
Synthesis and characterization of functionalized mesoporous silica by aerosol-assisted self-assembly
Resumo:
An efficient, productive, and low-cost aerosol-assisted self-assembly process has been developed to produce organically modified mesoporous silica particles via a direct co-condensation of silicate species and organosilicates that contain nonhydrolyzable functional groups in the presence of templating surfactant molecules. Different surfactants including cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, nonionic surfactant Brij-56, and triblock copolymer P123 have been used as the structure-directing agents. The organosilanes used in this study include tridecafluoro-1, 1,2,2-tetrahydrooctyltriethoxysilane, methytriethoxysilane, vinyltrimethoxysilane, and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies indicate the formation of particles with various mesostructures. Fourier transform infrared and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectra confirm the organic ligands are covalently bound to the surface of the silica framework. The porosity, pore size, and surface area of the particles were characterized using nitrogen adsorption and desorption measurements.

We have followed the morphological evolution and crystallization process of spherical micelles formed by the mixture of polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) and polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine)b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO) (the core of the spherical micelles was made of P2VP and PAA blocks through hydrogen bonding in neutral solvent N,N-dimethylformamide, DMF) via DMF vapor treatment. Different phenomena, such as rupture of the film, formation of cylinder aggregates and regular square lamellae, were observed when the micelle film was treated in DMF for different times. At the early stage of annealing in DMF vapor, the micelle film became unstable and ruptured. Cylinder aggregates, within which the PEO blocks achieved the association and primary chain folding, formed as the mesophases before the nucleation of the PEO single crystals at this stage. Further treatment in DMF vapor resulted in the nucleation of the PEO blocks at the corners of quasi-square lamellae. Then a quite regular "sandwich" lamellar structure, constructed by a PEO single-crystal layer covered by two tethered layers of other amorphous blocks on the top and bottom crystal basal surfaces, formed when the film of micelles was annealed in DMF vapor for sufficient times.

Organic mesoporous silicas (OMSs) were synthesized in the presence of urea via one-pot synthesis method, in which tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilica (APTES) were used as the silica resources, non-ionic surfactant was used as the template. XRD results showed that the average periodic mesopore sizes of OMSs in the presence of urea were larger than those in the absence of urea. It was also found that the pore sizes of the products in the presence of urea distributed more narrowly than those in the absence of urea, and the contents of organosiloxane incorporated into OMSs, the pore wall thicknesses, the pore volumes and the surface areas of the products all increased with the use of urea. This shows a novel way to synthesize high regular and periodic organic mesoporous silicas.

Organo-functionalized MCM-41 containing non-covalently linked 1,10-phenanthroline (denoted as Phen-MCM-41) was synthesized by template-directed co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane and the modified phenanthroline (denoted as Phen-Si). XRD, FTIR, UV/VIS spectroscopy as well as luminescence spectroscopy were employed to characterize Phen-MCM-41. No disintegration or loss of the Phen-Si during the solvent extraction procedure could be observed. When monitored by the ligand absorption wavelength (272 nm), the undoped MCM-41 produces a broad band emission centered at 450 run, whereas europium (III) doped Phen-MCM-41 displays the emission of the Eu3+, i.e., D-5(0) --> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transition lines due to the energy transfer from the ligands to Eu3+ as well as a broad band emission centered at 442 nm.

Biphenyl- (Biph-) containing 1-alkynes (3 and 4) and their polymers (1 and 2) with varying bridge groups and spacer lengths were synthesized and the effects of the structural variation on their properties, especially their mesomorphism and photoluminescence behaviors, were studied. The acetylene monomers 3(3) [HCdropC(CH2)(3)O-Biph-OCO(CH2)(10)CH3] and 4(m) [HCdropC(CH2)(m)OCO-Biph-OCO(CH2)(10)-CH3, m = 3, 4] were prepared by sequential etherization and esterification reactions of 1-alkynes. While 3(3) exhibits enantiotropic crystal E and SmB mesophases, its structural cousin 4(3) displays only a monotropic SmB phase. Enantiotropic SmA and SmB mesophases are, however, developed when the spacer length is increased to 4. Polymerizations of the monomers are effected by Mo-, W-, Rh-, and Fe-based catalysts, with the WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst giving the best results (isolation yield up to 85% and M-w up to 59000). The polymers were characterized by IR, UV, NMR, TGA, DSC, POM, XRD, and PL analyses. Compared to 1(3), 2(3) shows a red-shifted absorption, a higher T-i, and a better packed interdigitated bilayer SmA(d) structure, while the mesophase of 2(4) involves monolayer-packing arrangements of the mesogens. Upon photoexcitation, 1(3) emits almost no light but 2(m) gives a strong ultraviolet emission (lambda(max) similar to 350 nm), whose intensity increases with the spacer length.

A new series of chiral Schiff's bases containing 2-hydroxybenzilideneaniline moieties and their copper complexes were synthesized and studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and EPR measurement. The results show that most of the Schiff's bases and only two of the copper complexes exhibited chiral smectic liquid crystal phases.
