abstract {LaF3 single-layer coatings were prepared by thermal boat evaporation at the deposition temperatures of 189, 255, 277 and 321°C respectively. The crystal structures of the coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). A spectrophotometer was employed to measure its transmittance. Moreover, refractive index, extinction coefficient and cut-off wavelength were obtained from the measured transmittance spectral curve. The residual stress was evaluated by the Stoney's equation and optical interferometer. Laser induce damage threshold (LIDT) was performed by a tripled Nd:YAG laser system. The results show that the crystallization status becomes better with the deposition temperature increasing. Correspondingly, the grain size also gets larger. Meanwhile, the coatings become more compact and the refractive index increases. However, the absorption of coatings seriously rises and the cut-off wavelength drifts to the long wave. In addition, the residual stress also increases and the intrinsic stress plays a determinant role in the coating. The LIDT of the coating also enhances at high temperature.}

La2Zr2O7 (LZ) is a promising thermal barrier coating material for the high-temperature applications, which could be significantly toughened by the BaTiO3 piezoelectric phase incorporated into the matrix. The composites of xBaTiO(3)/(l-x)LZ (x=5, 10, 15, 20 vol%, LZ-x-BaTiO3) were densified by means of high-pressure sintering (HPS) under a pressure of 4.5 GPa at 1450 degrees C for 10 min, by which a high relative density above 93% could be obtained.

Lanthanum zirconate (La2Zr2O7, LZ) powders with the addition of various Y2O3 contents for potential thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) application were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The structure evolution, sintering-resistance and thermophysical properties of the synthesized powders and sintered ceramics were systematically studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate that LZ containing 3-12 wt.% Y2O3 mainly keeps a pyrochlore-type structure, and two new phases of LaYO3 and Y0.18Zr0.82O1.91 are also detected. Raman spectra confirm that the higher the Y2O3 content, the easier is the formation of LaYO3.

Lanthanum-zirconium-cerium composite oxide (La-2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)(2)O-7, LZ7C3) as a candidate material for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) was prepared by electron beam-physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD). The composition, crystal structure, thermophysical properties, surface and cross-sectional morphologies and cyclic oxidation behavior of the LZ7C3 coating were studied. The results indicated that LZ7C3 has a high phase stability between 298 K and 1573 K, and its linear thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) is similar to that of zirconia containing 8 wt% yttria (8YSZ). The thermal conductivity of LZ7C3 is 0.87 W m(-1) K-1 at 1273 K, which is almost 60% lower than that of 8YSZ. The deviation of coating composition from the ingot can be overcome by the addition of excess CeO2 and ZrO2 during ingot preparation or by adjusting the process parameters.

The extractions of the selected rare earths (Sc, Y, La and Gd) from hydrochloric acid solutions have been investigated using bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)-mono thiophosphinic acid (Cyanex 302, HL) in heptane as an extractant. The results demonstrate that the extractions of rare earths occur via the following reaction: Sc(OH)(2+) + 2[(HL)(2)]((O)) double left right arrow [Sc(OH)L-2 (.) 2(HL)]((O)) + 2H(+) Y3+ + 3[(HL)(2)]((O)) double left right arrow [Y(HL2)(3)]((O)) + 3H(+) La(OH)(2)(+) + 3[(HL)(2)](O) double left right arrow [La(OH)(2)L (.) 5(HL)]((O)) + H+ Gd(OH)(2+) + 3[(HL)(2)]((O)) double left right arrow [Gd(OH)L-2 (.) 4(HL)]((O)) + 2H(+) The pH(1/2) values and equilibrium constants of the extracted complexes have been deduced by taking into account the aqueous phase complexation of the metal ion with hydroxyl ligands and plausible complexes extracted into the organic phase. According to the pH(1/2) values, it is possible to realize mutual separation among Sc(III), Y(III), La(III) and Gd(III) with Cyanex 302 by controlling aqueous acidity.

Following intraperitoneal injection of lanthanum and terbium chloride and their complexes of diethyltriaminopentagacetic acid (DTPA) to adult mice with a dose of 0.28 mmol/kg body weight/day for three days. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and the content of lipid end product, malonaldehyde (MDA) in the mice livers have been assayed respectively. The results show that the activity of SOD was increased and the content of MDA was reduced for LaCl3 treated mice and the two targets were not changed for TbCl3, but the activity of GSH-Px was reduced markedly for both LaCl3 and TbCl3 while the above three targets were not changed for La-DTPA and Tb-DTPA complexes.

The paramagnetic susceptibility of lanthanum manganite has been measured over a wide temperature range (100-1073 K). On the basis of the thermodynamic equilibria between the various manganese ions with different valence and spin states and the magnetic interactions between the various manganese ions, a semiempirical formula has been proposed to calculate the paramagnetic susceptibilities of lanthanum manganite at different temperatures. The results indicate that most of the discrepancies between the calculated and experimental reciprocal susceptibilities of lanthanum manganite are less than 10% and that the relative contents of the various manganese ions in lanthanum manganite vary with temperature. The relative content of the trivalent manganese ion with a high spin state is dominant over the whole temperature range, while be relative content of the tetravalent manganese ion with a high spin state decreases monotonously with increasing temperature. At 300 K the calculated relative content of the tetravalent manganese ion in lanthanum manganite is about 34%, which is in good agreement with the experimental result (30%). There are some divalent manganese ions present in lanthanum manganite from low temperature to high temperature. The ratio of the relative contents of the tetravalent and divalent manganese ions in the compound varies with temperature. Above 750 K the relative content of the tetravalent manganese ion is less than that of the divalent manganese ion. The variation in the electrical resistivity of lanthanum manganite with temperature has also been interpreted reasonably.

Structural and infrared-to-visible upconversion fluorescence properties in ytterbium-sensitized erbrium-doped novel lead-free germanium bismuth-lanthanum glass have been studied. The structure of lead-free germanium-bismuth-lanthanum glass was investigated by peak-deconvolution of Raman spectrum, and the structural information was obtained from the peak wavenumbers. Intense green and red emissions centered at 525, 546, and 657 nm, corresponding to the transitions 2H(11/2) -> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2), and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively, were observed at room temperature. The quadratic dependence of the 525, 546, and 657 nm emissions on excitation power indicates that a two-photon absorption process occurs under 975 nm excitation. This novel lead-free germanium-bismuth-lanthanum glass with low maximum phonon energy (similar to 751 cm(-1)) can be used as potential host material for upconversion lasers. We report on cooperative downconversion in Yb3+-RE3+ (RE = Tm or Pr) codoped lanthanum borogermanate glasses (LBG), which are capable of splitting a visible photon absorbed by Tm3+ or Pr3+ ions into two near-infrared photons. The results indicate that Pr3+-Yb3+ is a more efficient ion couple than Tm3+-Yb3+ in terms of cooperative downconversion. We have obtained a highest quantum yield of 165% and 138% for Pr3+-Yb3+ and Tm3+-Yb3+ codoped LBG glasses under 468 nm excitation, respectively. However, ultraviolet light excitation to the charge transfer band of Yb3+ does not result in quantum splitting as rapid relaxation from the charge transfer band to 4f(13) levels of Yb3+ dominates.
