Sedimentation variables and benthic community data were collected at seven stations during four seasons in Xiangxi Bay of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China. Summer, the season of highest discharge into the reservoir, was characterized by the extreme sediment loading. The benthic macroinvertebrate community was dominated by oligochaetes across all seasons at most stations. In winter/spring, macroinvertebrate density and richness increased. Correspondence analysis showed that community structure differed among stations at the two ends of the bay in winter and among almost all stations in spring, However, no variable associated with sedimentation appeared to be associated with differences in the community.

We recovered the phylogenetic relationships among 23 species and subspecies of the highly specialized grade schizothoracine fishes distributing at 36 geographical sites in the Tibetan Plateau and its Surrounding regions by analyzing sequences of cytochrome b genes. Furthermore, we estimated the possible divergent times among lineages based on a historical geological isolation event in the Tibetan Plateau. The molecular data revealed that the highly specialized grade schizothoracine fishes were not a monophyletic group, but were the same as genera Gymnocypris and Schizogypsis. Our results indicated that the molecular phylogenetic relationships apparently reflected their geographical and historical associations with drainages, namely species from the same and adjacent drainages clustered together and had close relationships. The divergence times of different lineages were well consistent with the rapid uplift phases of the Tibetan Plateau in the late Cenozoic, suggesting that the origin and evolution of schizothoracine fishes were strongly influenced by environment changes resulting from the upheaval of the Tibetan Plateau.

As an endangered animal group, musk deer (genus Moschus) are not only a great concern of wildlife conservation, but also of special interest to evolutionary studies due to long-standing arguments on the taxonomic and phylogenetic associations in this group. Using museum samples, we sequenced complete mitochondrial cytochrome b genes (1140 bp) of all suggested species of musk deer in order to reconstruct their phylogenetic history through molecular information. Our results showed that the cytochrome b gene tree is rather robust and concurred for all the algorithms employed (parsimony, maximum likelihood, and distance methods). Further, the relative rate test indicated a constant sequence substitution rate among all the species, permitting the dating of divergence events by molecular clock. According to the molecular topology, M. moschiferus branched off the earliest from a common ancestor of musk deer (about 700,000 years ago); then followed the bifurcation forming the M. berezouskii lineage and the lineage clustering M. fuscus, M. chrysogaster, and M. leucogaster (around 370,000 years before present), interestingly the most recent speciation event in musk deer happened rather recently (140,000 years ago), which might have resulted from the diversified habitats and geographic barriers in southwest China caused by gigantic movements of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in history. Combining the data of current distributions, fossil records, and molecular data of this study, we suggest that the historical dispersion of musk deer might be from north to south in China. Additionally, in our further analyses involving other pecora species, musk deer was strongly supported as a monophyletic group and a valid family in Artiodactyla, closely related to Cervidae. A series of main-chain Liquid-crystalline ionomers containing sulfonate groups pendant on the polymer backbone were synthesized by an interfacial condensation reaction of 4,4'-dihydroxy-alpha,alpha'-dimethyl benzalazine, a mesogenic monomer, with brilliant yellow (BY), a sulfonate-containing monomer, and a 1/9 mixture of terephthaloyl and sebacoyl dichloride. The structures of the polymers were characterized by LR and UV spectroscopies. DSC and thermogravimetric analysis were used to measure the thermal properties of those polymers, and the mesogenic properties were characterized by a polarized optical microscope, DSC, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The ionomers were thermally stable to about 310 degreesC. They were thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymers (LCPs) with high mesomorphic-phase transition temperatures and exhibited broad nematic mesogenic regions of 160-170 degreesC, and they were lyotropic LCPs with willowy leaf-shaped textures in sulfuric acid. However, the thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties were somewhat weakened because the concentration of BY was more than 8%. The inherent viscosity in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone suggested that intramolecular associations of sulfonate groups occurred at low concentration, and intermolecular associations predominated at higher concentration.
