An investigation has been made into the plastic deformation behavior of a Monel alloy deformed at high strain rate of 10(5) s(-1) by split Hopkinson bar. The results reveal that there are some equiaxed grains with an average size of 150 nm in diameter in the center of the shear bands, suggesting that this microstructure characteristics be developed by dynamic recrystallization, arising from the deformation and the rapid temperature rise in the band. Analysis shows that the plastic strain rate and the mobile dislocation density play a key role in the new crystallized grain formation and growth. Based on grain boundary energy change and diffusion mechanism, the grain growth kinetics is developed for plastic deformation at a high strain rate.

Plastic stress-strain fields of two types of steel specimens loaded to large deformations are studied. Computational results demonstrate that, owing to the fact that the hardening exponent of the material varies as strain enlarges and the blunting of the crack tip, the well known HRR stress field in the plane strain model can only hold for the stage of a small plastic strain. Plastic dilatancy is shown to have substantial effects on strain distributions and blunting. To justify the constitutive equations used for analysis and to check the precision of computations, the load-deflection of a three-point bend beam and the load-elongation of an axisymmetric bar notched by a V-shaped cut were tested and recorded. The computed curves are in good accordance with experimental data.

Plastic deformation behaviors of Zr65Al10Ni10CU15 and Zr52.5Al10Ni10Cu15Be12.5 bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are studied by using the depth-sensing nanoindentation, microindentation and uniaxial compression. The Be-containing BMG exhibits a significantly improved overall plastic strain compared with the Be-free alloy during compressive tests. Both BMGs show a loading-rate-dependent serrated flow during nanoindentation measurements, but the Be-containing alloy exhibits a much lower critical loading rate for the disappearance of the serration than the Be-free BMG. The shear band patterns developed during plastic deformation are investigated by microindentation technique, wherein much higher shear band density is found in the Be-containing alloy than in the Be-free alloy, indicating an easier nucleation of shear bands in the former BMG. The difference in the plastic deformation behavior of the two BMGs can be explained by a free volume model.

Plastic deformation behaviors of Zr52.5Al10Ni10Cu15Be12.5, Mg65Cu25Gd10 and Pd43Ni10Cu27P20 bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are studied by using the depth-sensing nanoindentation, macroindentation and uniaxial compression. The significant difference in plastic deformation behavior cannot be correlated to the Poisson's ratio or the ratio of shear modulus to bulk modulus of the three BMGs, but can be explained by the free volume model. It is shown that the nucleation of local shear band is easy and multiple shear bands can be activated in the Zr52.5Al10Ni10Cu15Be12.5 alloy, which exhibits a distinct plastic strain during uniaxial compression and less serrated flow during nanoindentation. Zr-based bulk metallic glass matrix composites with the composition of Zr56.2Ti13.8Nb5.0Cu6.9Ni5.6Be12.(5) were synthesized by the copper-mould suction casting and the Bridgman solidification. The composite, containing a well-developed flowery beta-Zr dendritic phase, was obtained by the Bridgman solidification with the withdrawal velocity of 0.8 mm/s and the temperature gradient of 45 K/mm, and the ultimate strength of 2050 MPa and fracture plastic strain of 14.6% of the composite were achieved, which was mainly interpreted by the homogeneous dispersion of bcc beta-Zr phase in the glass matrix. A composite material containing uniformly distributed micrometer-sized Nb particles in a Zr-based amorphous matrix was prepared by suction cast. The resulting material exhibits high fractured strength over 1550 MPa and enhanced plastic strain of about 29.7% before failure in uniaxial compression test at room temperature. Studies of the serrations on the stress-strain curves and the shear bands on the fractured samples reveal that the amplitude of the stress drop of each serration step corresponds to the extent of the propagation of a single shear band through the materials. The composite exhibits more serration steps and smaller amplitude of stress drop due to the pinning of shear band propagation by ductile Nb particles.

(Zr65Al10Ni10Cu15)(100-x) Nb-x glass forming alloys with Nb contents ranging from 0 to 15 at.% were prepared by water-cooled copper mould cast. The alloys with different Nb contents exhibited different microstructures and mechanical properties. Unlike the monolithic Zr65Al10Ni10Cu15 bulk metallic glass, only a few primary bee beta-Ti phase dendrites were found to distribute in the glassy matrix of the alloys with x = 5. For alloys with x = 10, more beta-phase dendrites forms, together with quasicrystalline particles densely distributed in the matrix of the alloys. For alloys with x = 15, the microstructure of the alloy is dominated by a high density of fully developed P-phase dendrites and the volume fraction of quasicrystalline particles significantly decreases. Room temperature compression tests showed that the alloys with x = 5 failed at 1793 MPa and exhibited an obvious plastic strain of 3.05%, while the other samples all failed in a brittle manner. The ultimate fracture strengths are 1793, 1975 and 1572 MPa for the alloys with x = 0, 10 and 15 at.% Nb, respectively.

Cylindrical specimens (4 mm diameter and 4 mm height) of titanium alloy bar were given various heat treatments to provide a wide range of microstructures and mechanical parameters. These specimens were then subjected to high plastic strain at a large strain rate (103 s-1 ) during dynamic compression by a split Hopkinson bar at ambient temperature. The microstructures of the localised shear bands were examined by optical and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that there are two types of localised shear bands: deformed and white shear bands. A detailed observation reveals that there is no difference in the nature of the deformed and white shear bands, but they occur at different stages of localised deformation. It is found that there is a burst of strain, corresponding to a critical strain rate at which the white shear band occurs and no phase transformation occurs in the shear bands.

A kind of novel Ti-based composites was developed by introducing different amounts of carbon element to the Ti-50 Cu-23 Ni-20 Sn-7 bulk metallic glass forming alloys. The thermal stability and microstructural evolution of the composites were investigated. Room temperature compression tests reveal that the composite samples with 1% and 3% (mass fraction) carbon additions have higher fracture strength and obvious plastic strain of 2 195 MPa, 3.1% and 1 913 MPa, 1.3% respectively, compared with those of the corresponding carbon-free Ti-50 Ni-20 Cu-23 Sn-7 alloys. The deformation mechanisms of the composites with improved mechanical properties were also discussed.

The influences of I,article size on the mechanical properties of the particulate metal matrix composite;are obviously displayed in the experimental observations. However, the phenomenon can not be predicted directly using the conventional elastic-plastic theory. It is because that no length scale parameters are involved in the conventional theory. In the present research, using the strain gradient plasticity theory, a systematic research of the particle size effect in the particulate metal matrix composite is carried out. The roles of many composite factors, such as: the particle size, the Young's modulus of the particle, the particle aspect ratio and volume fraction, as well as the plastic strain hardening exponent of the matrix material, are studied in detail. In order to obtain a general understanding for the composite behavior, two kinds of particle shapes, ellipsoid and cylinder, are considered to check the strength dependence of the smooth or non-smooth particle surface. Finally, the prediction results will be applied to the several experiments about the ceramic particle-reinforced metal-matrix composites. The material length scale parameter is predicted.

Thermally induced recovery of nanoindents in a CUAINi single crystal shape memory alloy was studied by nanoindentation in conjunction with a heating stage. Nanoindents formed by a Berkovich indenter at room temperature were heated to 40, 70 and 100 degrees C. Partial recovery was observed for the nanoindents. The recovery ratio depended on the heating temperature. Indentation of CuAlNi can induce inelastic deformation via dislocation motion and a stress-induced matensitic transformation. The percentages of dislocation-induced plastic strain would affect the thermal deformation of CuAlNi, because the induced dislocations could stabilize stress-induced martensite plates even when the temperature above austenite finish temperature, A(f). When the applied indentation load is low (less than 10,000 mu N), the shape recovery strain is predominant, compared with the dislocation-induced plastic strain. Therefore, the degree of indent recovery in the depth direction, delta(D), is high (about 0.7-0.8 at 100 degrees C).

This paper presents models to describe the dislocation dynamics of strain relaxation in an epitaxial uniform layer, epitaxial multilayers and graded composition buffers. A set of new evolution equations for nucleation rate and annihilation rate of threading dislocations is developed. The dislocation interactions are incorporated into the kinetics process by introducing a resistance term, which depends only on plastic strain. Both threading dislocation nucleation and threading dislocation annihilation are characterized. The new evolution equations combined with other evolution equations for the plastic strain rate, the mean velocity and the dislocation density rate of the threading dislocations are tested on GexSi1-x/Si(100) heterostructures, including epitaxial multilayers and graded composition buffers. It is shown that the evolution equations successfully predict a wide range of experimental results of strain relaxation and threading dislocation evolution in the materials system. Meanwhile, the simulation results clearly signify that the threading dislocation annihilation plays a vital role in the reduction of threading dislocation density.

Fe-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) normally exhibit super high strength but significant brittleness at ambient temperature. Therefore, it is difficult to investigate the plastic deformation behavior and mechanism in these alloys through conventional tensile and compressive tests due to lack of distinct macroscopic plastic strain. In this work, the deformation behavior of Fe52Cr15Mo9Er3C15B6 BMG was investigated through instrumented nanoindentation and uniaxial compressive tests. The results show that serrated flow, the typical plastic deformation feature of BMGs, could not be found in as-cast and partially crystallized samples during nanoindentation. In addition, the deformation behavior and mechanical properties of the alloy are insensitive to the applied loading rate. The mechanism for the appearance of the peculiar deformation behavior in the Fe-based BMG is discussed in terms of the temporal and spatial characteristics of shear banding during nanoindentation.

The influence of the thermal residual stress on the deformation behavior of a composite has been analyzed with a new micromechanical method. The method is based on secant moduli approximation and a new homogenized effective stress to characterize the plastic state of the matrix. It is found that the generated thermal residual stresses after cooling and their influence on the subsequent deformation behavior depends significantly on the aspect ratio of the inclusions. With prolate inclusions, the presence of thermal residual stresses generate a higher compressive hardening curves of the composite, but it is reversed with oblate inclusions. For particle reinforced composite, thermal residual stresses induce a tensile hardening curve higher than the compressive one and this is in agreement with experimental observations. Finite element analysis is employed to investigate void growth embedded in elastic-plastic matrix material. Axisymmetric and plane stress conditions are considered. The simulation of void growth in a unit cell model is carried out over a wide range of triaxial tensile stressing or large plastic straining for various strain hardening materials to study the mechanism of void growth in ductile materials. Triaxial tension and large plastic strain encircling around the void are found to be of most importance for driving void growth. The straining mode of incremental loading which favors the necessary strain concentration around void for its growth can be characterized by the vanishing condition of a parameter called "the third invariant of generalized strain rate". Under this condition, it accentuates the internal strain concentration and the strain energy stored/dissipated within the material layer surrounding the void. Experimental results are cited to justify the effect of this loading parameter. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
