The electrostatic interactions between nearest-neighbouring chondroitin sulfate glycosaminoglycan (CS-GAG) molecular chains are obtained on the bottle brush conformation of proteoglycan aggrecan based on an asymptotic solution of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation the CS-GAGs satisfy under the physiological conditions of articular cartilage. The present results show that the interactions are associated intimately with the minimum separation distance and mutual angle between the molecular chains themselves. Further analysis indicates that the electrostatic interactions are not only expressed to be purely exponential in separation distance and decrease with the increasing mutual angle but also dependent sensitively on the saline concentration in the electrolyte solution within the tissue, which is in agreement with the existed relevant conclusions.

The polyetherketone (PEK-c) guest-host system thin films doped with 3-(1,1-dicyanothenyl)-1-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pryazole (DCNP) were prepared. Their second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) coefficients chi(33)((2)) were measured by using Maker fringe method for the polymer films doped with different weight percents of DCNP. Experimental results indicate that the second-order NLO properties of the poled polymer films could decrease with the chromophore loading increasing when the chromophore loading reaches a fairly high level. In this paper, the relationship between the macroscopic second-order NLO coefficient and the chromophore number density was modified under considering the role of the electrostatic interactions of chromophores in the polymer film. According to the modified relationship, the macroscopic second-order NLO coefficient is no longer in direct proportion with the chromophore number density in the polymer film. The effect of the electrostatic interactions of chromophores on second-order NLO properties was discussed. The attenuation of the macroscopic second-order NLO activity can be demonstrated by the role of the chromophore electrostatic interactions at high loading of chromophore in the polymer systems.

Conductive hybrids were prepared in a water/ethanol solution via the Solgel process from an inorganic sol containing carboxyl groups and water-borne conductive polyaniline (cPANI). The inorganic sol was prepared by the hydrolysis and condensation of methyltriethoxysilane with the condensed product of maleic anhydride and aminopropyltriethoxysilane as a catalyst, for which the carboxyl counterion along the cPANI backbone acted as an electrostatic-interaction moiety. The existence of this electrostatic interaction could improve the compatibility of the two components and contribute to the homogeneous dispersion of cPANI in the silica phase. The electrostaticinteraction hybrids displayed a conductivity percolation threshold as low as 1.1 wt % polyaniline in an emeraldine base, showing 2 orders of magnitude higher electrical conductivity than that without electrostatic interactions. The electrostatic-interaction hybrids also showed good water resistance; the electrical conductivity with a cPANI loading of 16 wt % underwent a slight change after 14 days of soaking in water.

Imaging ellipsometry was combined with electrochemical methods for studying electrostatic interactions of protein and solid surfaces. The potential of zero charge for gold-coated silicon wafer/solution interfaces wad determined by AC impedance method. The potential of the gold-coated silicon wafer was controlled at the potential of zero charge, and the adsorption of fibrinogen on the potential-controlled and non-controlled surfaces was measured in real time at the same time by imaging ellipsometry The effect of electrostatic interaction was studied by comparing the difference between the potential of controlled adsorption and the Potential of noncontrolled adsorption. It was shown that the rate of fibrinogen adsorption on the potentiostatic surface was faster than that on the nonpotentiostatic surface. The electrostatic influence on fibrinogen adsorption on the gold-coated silicon wafer was weak, so the hydrophobic interaction should be the major affinity.

Tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) ((Ru(bpy)(3)](2+)) is one of the most extensively studied and used electrochemiluminescent (ECL) compounds owing to its superior properties, which include high sensitivity and stability under moderate conditions in aqueous solution. In this paper we present a simple method for the preparation of [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+)-containing microstructures based on electrostatic assembly The formation of such micro-structures occurs in a single process by direct mixing of aqueous solutions of [Ru(bpy)(3)]Cl-2 and K-3[Fe(CN)(6)] at room temperature. The electrostatic interactions between [Ru(bpy)(3)]Cl-2 cations and [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) anions cause them to assemble into the resulting microstructures. Both the molar ratio and concentration of reactants were found to have strong influences on the formation of these microstructures. Most importantly, the resulting [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+)- containing microstructures exhibit excellent ECL behavior and, therefore, hold great promise for solid-state ECL detection in capillary electrophoresis (CE) or CE microchips.

An investigation into the interactions between thiamine monophosphate (TMP) and anions has resulted in the preparation and X-ray characterization of the compounds (TMP)(Hg2Br5).0.5H(2)O (1) and (TMP)(2)(Hg3I8) (2). In each compound the TMP molecule exists as a monovalent cation in the usual F conformation. The halogenomercurate anions occur in two-dimensional (2-D) network in 1 or one-dimensional (1-D) chain in 2. In both 1 and 2, the structures consist of alternating cationic sheets of the hydrogen-bonded TMP molecules and anionic sheets of the polymeric halogenomercurate anions. The TMP molecule binds to the polymeric anions through the characteristic 'anion bridge I', C(2)-H..X...pyrimidinium (X = Br in 1 and 1 in 2), and electrostatic interactions between electropositive S(1) and halogen atoms. The 'anion bridge II' of the type N(4'1)-H...X...thiazolium (X = phosphate group) plays a role in stabilizing the molecular conformation. The biological implication of the host-guest-like complexation between TMP and polymeric anions is discussed.
HOST-GUEST INTERACTIONS OF THIAMINE WITH ANIONS - CRYSTAL-STRUCTURE OF THIAMINE IODIDE SESQUIHYDRATE
Resumo:
The crystal structure of thiamine iodide sesquihydrate has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods as a host-guest model for coenzyme-substrate interactions. The asymmetric unit contains two chemical units. Both the thiamine molecules A and B, which are crystallographically independent, assume the usual F conformation and have a disordered hydroxyethyl side chain. An iodide anion (or a water molecule) bridges the pyrimidine and thiazolium rings of molecule A (or B) by forming a hydrogen bond with the amino group and an electrostatic contact with the thiazolium ring to stabilize the molecular conformation. In the crystal the thiamine molecules self-associate to form a pipe-like polymeric structure, in which four thiamine hosts surround an iodide guest and hold it through C(2)-H...I hydrogen bonds and thiazolium...I electrostatic interactions. Crystal data: C12H17N4OS+.I- . 1.5 H2O, monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 12.585(2), b = 25.303(5), c = 12.030(2) angstrom, beta = 115.15(1)degrees, V = 3468(1) angtrom3, Z = 8, D(c) = 1.606 g cm-3, R = 0.045 for 3328 observed reflections.

The chemokine receptor CCR5 is the receptor for several chemokines and major coreceptor for R5 human immunodeficiency virus type-1 strains entry into cell. Three-dimensional models of CCR5 were built by using homology modeling approach and 1 ns molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, because studies of site-directed mutagenesis and chimeric receptors have indicated that the N-terminus (Nt) and extracellular loops (ECLs) of CCR5 are important for ligands binding and viral fusion and entry, special attention was focused on disulfide bond function, conformational flexibility, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and solvent-accessible surface area of Nt and ECLs of this protein part. We found that the extracellular segments of CCR5 formed a well-packet globular domain with complex interactions occurred between them in a majority of time of MID simulation, but Nt region could protrude from this domain sometimes. The disulfide bond Cys20-Cys269 is essential in controlling specific orientation of Nt region and maintaining conformational integrity of extracellular domain. RMS comparison analysis between conformers revealed the ECL1 of CCR5 stays relative rigid, whereas the ECL2 and Nt are rather flexible. Solvent-accessible surface area calculations indicated that the charged residues within Nt and ECL2 are often exposed to solvent. Integrating these results with available experimental data, a two-step gp120-CCR5 binding mechanism was proposed. The dynamic interaction of CCR5 extracellular domain with gp120 was emphasized. Based on nine quantum chemical descriptors computed by PM3 Hamiltonian, using partial least squares analysis, a significant quantitative structure-property relationship for the logarithm of octanol-air partition coefficients (log K-OA) of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was obtained. The cross-validated Q(cum)(2) value of the model is 0.962, indicating a good predictive ability. The intermolecular dispersive interactions and thus the size of the PCB molecules play a key role in governing log K-OA. The greater the size of PCB molecules, the greater the log K-OA values. Increasing E-LUMO (the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) values of the PCBs leads to decreasing log K-OA values, indicating possible interactions between PCB and octanol molecules. Increasing Q(Cl)(+) (the most positive net atomic charges on a chlorine atom) and Q(C)(-) (the largest negative net atomic charge on a carbon atom) values of PCBs results in decreasing log K-OA values, implying possible intermolecular electrostatic interactions between octanol and PCB molecules. Films of polyetherketone doped with the chromophores Disperse Red 1 (DR1) and Disperse Red 13 (DR13) were prepared by spin-coating method. By the in situ Second-harmonic Generation (SHG) signal intensity measurement, the optimal poling temperatures were obtained. For the investigated polyetherketone polymer doped with DR1 (DR1/PEK-c) and polyetherketone polymer doped with DR13 (DR13/PEK-c) films, the optimal poling temperatures were 150degreesC and 140degreesC, respectively. Under the optimal poling conditions, the high second-order nonlinear optical coefficient chi(33)((2)) = 11.02 pm/V has been obtained for the DR1/PEK-c; and for DR13/PEK-c at the same conditions the coefficient is 17.9 pm/V. The SHG signal intensity DR1/PEK-c could maintain more than 80% of its initial value when the temperature was under 100degreesC, and the SHG signal intensity of the DR13/PEK-c could maintain more than 80% of its initial value when the temperature was under 135degreesC. In this work, we illustrate a simple chelation-based strategy to trigger DNA release from DNA-incorporated multilayer films, which were fabricated through the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of DNA and inorganic zirconium (IV) ion (Zr4+). After being incubated in several kinds of chelator solutions, the DNA multilayer films disassembled and released the incorporated DNA. This was most probably due to the cleavage of coordination/electrostatic interactions between Zr4+ and phosphate groups of DNA. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR), UV-vis spectrometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to characterize the assembly and the disassembly of the films.

Electrostatic assembly of one species can be realized using gelatin as a polyampholyte. Under suitable conditions where the electrostatic attraction and repulsion were both significant and in balance, linear growth of multilayers driven by electrostatic interactions was sustained over many successive assembly steps, and the maximum amount of adsorption of each layer was reached when the solution pH was around the isoelectric point. The rearrangement of the adsorbed chains after drying was confirmed by contact angle analysis. In addition with only one species involved, the assembled thin films should be chemically uniform rather than layered.

A series of cost-effective, proton-conducting composite membranes, comprising of Nafion (R) ionomer, chitosan (CS). and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), is successfully prepared. By taking advantage of the strong electrostatic interactions between Nafion (R) ionomer and CS component, Nafion ionomer is effectively implanted into the PVA/CS composite membranes, and improves proton conductivity of the PVA/CS composite membranes. Furthermore, this effect dramatically depends on the composition ratio of PVA/CS, and the optimum conductivity is obtained at the PVA/CS ratio of 1:1. The developed composite membranes exhibit much lower methanol permeability compared with the widely used Nafion (R) membrane, indicating that these novel membranes have great potential for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs).

Layer-by-layer assembly technique was used to construct ultrathin film of cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) by electrostatic interactions, and the film was employed as a precursor on which an OF8T2 film was deposited by spin coating. Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) was observed and improved for the OF8T2 film. Compared with OF8T2 film on quartz, the introduction of CPMV nanoparticles reduced the threshold and loss, and remarkably increased the net gain. The threshold, loss, and gain reached 0.05 mJ/ pulse, 6.9 cm(-1), and 82 cm(-1), respectively. CPMV nanoparticles may enormously scatter light, resulting in a positive feedback, thus the ASE is easily obtained and improved.
