We report that the brittle-ductile transition of polymers induced by temperature exhibits critical behavior. When t close to 0, the critical surface to surface interparticle distance (IDc) follows the scaling law: IDc proportional to t(-v) where t = 1 - T/T-BD(m) (T and T-BD(m) are the test temperature and brittle-ductile transition temperature of matrix polymer, respectively) and v = 2/D. It is clear that the scaling exponent v only depends on dimension (D). For 2, 3, and 4 dimension, v = 1, 2/3, and 1/2 respectively. The result indicates that the ID, follows the same scaling law as that of the correlation length (xi), when t approach to zero.

In this article we present a mechanical pattern transfer process where a thermosetting polymer mold instead of a metal, dielectric, ceramic, or semiconductor master made by conventional lithography was used as the master to pattern thermoplastic polymers in hot embossing lithography. The thermosetting polymer mold was fabricated by a soft lithography strategy, microtransfer molding. For comparison, the thermosetting polymer mold and the silicon wafer master were both used to imprint the thermoplastic polymer, polymethylmethacrylate. Replication of the thermosetting polymer mold and the silicon wafer master was of the same quality. This indicates that the thermosetting polymer mold could be used for thermoplastic polymer patterning in hot embossing lithography with high fidelity.

The brittle-ductile transition (BDT) of particle toughened polymers was extensively studied in terms of morphology, strain rate, and temperature. The calculation results showed that both the critical interparticle distance (IDc) and the brittle-ductile transition temperature (T-BD) of polymers were a function of strain rate. The IDc reduced nonlinearly with increasing strain rate, whereas T-BD increased considerably with increasing strain rate. The effects of temperature and plasticizer concentration on BDT were discussed using a percolation model. The results were in agreement with the experiments.

Flow-mode static and dynamic laser light scattering (SLS/DLS) studies of polymers, including polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (TCB) at 150 degreesC were performed on a high temperature gel permeation chromatography (GPC) coupled with a SLS/DLS detector. Both absolute molecular weight (M) and molecular sizes (radius of gyration, R-g and hydrodynamic radius, R-h) of polymers eluting from the GPC columns were obtained simultaneously. The conformation of different polymers in TCB at 150 degreesC were discussed according to the scaling relationships between R-g, R-h and M and the rho-ratio (p = R-g/R-h). Flow-mode DLS results of PDMS were verified by batch-mode DLS study of the same sample. The presented technique was proved to be a convenient and quick method to study the shape and conformation of polymers in solution at high temperature. However, the flow-mode DLS was only applicable for high molecular weight polymers with a higher refractive index increment such as PDMS.

Radiation crosslinking of polymers mainly depends on the structure of polymer chain. The flexibility and mobility of chain directly influence the possibility of the reactive radicals recombination. Flexible chain is easier to crosslink than rigid-chain polymer. The latter must be crosslinked at high temperature, as most polymers can only crosslink above their melting point. Structural effect also influences the mechanism of radiation crosslinking of polymers. We find from the results in literature and in our laboratory that, the flexibility chain polymer mainly crosslinked with H type, but the rigid chain polymer mainly crosslinked with Y type. Recent research carried out at the Chinese Institute of Applied Chemistry has contributed significantly to the understanding of the radiation chemistry of polymers. High energy radiation has been successfully used to cross-link fluoropolymers and polyimides. Here chain flexibility has been shown to play an important role, and T-type structures were found to exist in the cross-linked fluoropolymers. A modified Charlesby-Pinner equation, based upon the importance of chain flexibility, was developed to account for the sol-radiation dose relationship in systems of this type. An XPS method has been developed to measure the cross-linking yields in aromatic polymers and fluoropolymers, based upon the dose dependence of the aromatic shake-up peaks and the F/C ratios, respectively. Methods for radiation cross-linking degrading polymers in polymer blends have also been developed, as have methods for improving the radiation resistance of polymers through radiation cross-linking.

Persistent spectral hole burning spectroscopy is applied to evaluate the low-temperature relaxation around the dye molecules doped in several types of polymers. The doped dye is tetraphenylporphine, and the measured polymers are vinyl polymers and main chain aromatic polymers. The changes of microscopic environments around the dye are evaluated from the changes in the hole profiles during temperature cycling experiments. The relaxation behavior of the polymers is discussed in relation to their chemical structures. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

In order to study the oriented (epitaxial) crystallization of thermoplastic polymers on oriented polymer substrates, generally the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used. With this instrument, the crystallized material can easily be resolved and orientation relationships can be monitored by electron diffraction. Disadvantages are the time consuming sample preparations and difficulties in the in-situ observations of the crystallization events, because of the radiation sensitivity of the polymer crystals. It is demonstrated that these disadvantages of the TEM can be eleminated by the use of different methods of light optical contrasts under specific preparation conditions of the samples and that the optical microscopy being a supplementary method to the TEM for investigations of epitaxial crystallization.

In an attempt to explore the effect of structural multiplicity of polymers on the mechanism of radiation crosslinking, the adaptability of the Charlesby-Pinner's equation and its various modified versions are examined. It is recognized that both chemical and morphological multiplicity of polymer structure results in the multiplicity of crosslinking mechanism, and that any single equation can only be applicable to a certain step of the whole radiation process.

A method for the prediction of gas permeabilities (P) through polymers from their chemical structure has been developed on the basis of the ratio of molar free volume to molar cohesive energy, V(f)/E(coh). The permeation of small gas molecules through polymer membranes is dependent on the chain packing density measured by V(f) and segmental motion of polymer chains measured by E(coh). But no simple relationship between P and V(f) or E(coh) alone was found. The permeability data of more than 60 polymers covering 7 orders of magnitude for six gases have been treated with linear regression analysis. All plots of log P vs. V(f)/E(coh) gave good straight lines. It is also found that a linear relationship holds when plotting both the intercepts and slopes of log P vs. V(f)/E(coh) lines against square of the diameters of gas molecules. Therefore, the permeabilities of all the non-swelling gases through a great variety of polymers can be estimated using two correlations above. Moreover, this method is more accurate than others in the literature and may found useful for the selection of gas separation or barrier membrane materials.

The synthesis of a new type of polymers with main chain chirality based on BINOL skeleton is described. Titanium-BINOLate catalysts are easily generated from these polymers and applied to the asymmetric reaction of Et2Zn with benzaldehyde. The products are obtained in good yields with moderate enantioselectivities.

A new isothermal equation of state for polymers in the solid and the liquid is given by P = B(T, 0)/(n - m){[V(T, 0)/V(T, P)]n + 1 - [V(T, 0)/V(T, P)]m + 1} where n = 6.14 and m = 1.16 are general constant's for polymer systems. Comparison of the equation with experimental data is made for six polymers at different temperatures and pressures. The results predict that the equation of state describes the isothermal compression behaviour of polymers in the glass and the melt states, except at the transition temperature.

A method was adopted to fix a series of polymers of PE-b-PEO with different PEO/PE segments on the chains of LLDPE. Maleic anhydride (MA) reacting with hydroxyl group of PE-b-PEO (mPE-b-PEO) was used as the intermediate. The structures of intermediates and graft copolymers were approved by H-1 NMR and FTIR. XPS analysis revealed a great amount of oxygen on the surface of grafted copolymers although the end group of PEO was fixed on the LLDPE chains through MA. Thermal properties of the graft copolymers as determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that PE segments in the grafted monomers could promote the heterogeneous nucleation of the polymer, increase T., and crystal growth rate.
