Video-based facial expression recognition is a challenging problem in computer vision and human-computer interaction. To target this problem, texture features have been extracted and widely used, because they can capture image intensity changes raised by skin deformation. However, existing texture features encounter problems with albedo and lighting variations. To solve both problems, we propose a new texture feature called image ratio features. Compared with previously proposed texture features, e. g., high gradient component features, image ratio features are more robust to albedo and lighting variations. In addition, to further improve facial expression recognition accuracy based on image ratio features, we combine image ratio features with facial animation parameters (FAPs), which describe the geometric motions of facial feature points. The performance evaluation is based on the Carnegie Mellon University Cohn-Kanade database, our own database, and the Japanese Female Facial Expression database. Experimental results show that the proposed image ratio feature is more robust to albedo and lighting variations, and the combination of image ratio features and FAPs outperforms each feature alone. In addition, we study asymmetric facial expressions based on our own facial expression database and demonstrate the superior performance of our combined expression recognition system.

Behavioral and ventilatory parameters have the possibility of predicting the stress state of fish in vivo and in situ. This paper presents a new image-processing algorithm for quantifying the average swimming speed of a fish school in an aquarium. This method is based on the alteration in projected area caused by the movement of individual fish during frame sequences captured at given time intervals. The image enhancement method increases the contrast between fish and background, and is thus suitable for use in turbid aquaculture water. Behavioral parameters (swimming activity and distribution parameters) and changes in ventilation frequency (VF) of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) responded to acute fluctuations in dissolved oxygen (DO) which were monitored continuously in the course of normoxia, falling DO level, maintenance of hypoxia (three levels of 1.5, 0.8 and 0.3 mg l(-1)) and subsequent recovery to normoxia. These parameters responded sensitively to acute variations in DO level; they displayed significant changes (P < 0.05) during severe hypoxia (0.8 and 0.3 mg l(-1) level) compared with normoxic condition, but there was no significant difference under conditions of mild hypoxia (1.5 mg l(-1) level). There was no significant difference in VF between two levels of severe hypoxia 0.8 and 0.3 mg l(-1) level during the low DO condition. The activity and distribution parameters displayed distinguishable differences between the 0.8 and 0.3 mg l(-1) levels. The behavioral parameters are thus capable of distinguishing between different degrees of severe hypoxia, though there were relatively large fluctuations. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A data manipulation method has been developed for automatic peak recognition and result evaluation in the analysis of organic chlorinated hydrocarbons with dual-column gas chromatography. Based on the retention times of two internal standards, pentachlorotoluene and decachlorobiphenyl, the retention times of chlorinated hydrocarbons can be calibrated automatically and accurately. It is very convenient to identify the peaks by comparing the retention times of samples with the calibrated retention times calculated from the relative retention indices of standards. Meanwhile, with a suggested two-step evaluation method the evaluation coefficients and the suitable quantitative results of each component can be automatically achieved for practical samples in an analytical system using two columns with different polarities and two internal standards. Whether facial identity and facial expression was processed independently has long been a controversy. Studies at levels of experimental, neuropsychological, functional imaging and cell-recording all failed to consistently support either independent or interdependent processing. Present study proposed that familiarity and discriminability of facial identity and expression was important variable in mediating the relation between facial identity and facial expression recognition. Effects of familiarity on recognition of facial identity and expression had been examined (e.g. Ganel & Goshen-Gottstein, 2004) but the role of the discriminability in recognition of facial identity and expression has not yet been carefully examined. To examine the role of discriminability of facial identity and expression, 8 experiments were conducted with Garner’s speeded classification task in recognition of identity and expression of unfamiliar faces. The discriminability of facial identity and expression was manipulated, and the measurements of Garner interference and facilitation indicated that: 1. The discriminability of facial identity and expression mediate the relation between facial identity and expression recognition. Four possible discriminability combinations between identity and expression predicted 4 interference patterns between them. Low discriminability accounted for the interference either in facial identity judgment or in facial expression judgment task. 2. The measurements of eye movements indicated that either in facial identity or in facial expression recognition low discriminability led to a narrowly-distributed eye fixation pattern while high discriminability led to a widely-distributed eye fixation pattern. 3. By combining the morphing technique with the Garner paradigm, study 2 successfully demonstrated the linar relation between discriminability and Garner facilitation effects, confirmed the discriminability effects in the measurements of Garner facilitation effects.. 4. By providing the varying information of facial expression, study 2 revealed that varying information improved the discriminability of facial expression, and then enhanced the recognition of facial expression. All the results indicated that the discriminability of facial identity and expression could mediate the independent or interdependent processing between them, and the discriminability effects on recognition of identity and expression of unfamiliar faces was identified. The results from interference effects and facilitation effects both indicated that the dimensional relation between facial identity and expression was separable but not asymmetric claimed by previous studies(Schweinberger et al, 1998, 1999). Absolutedly independent or interdependent processing between facial identity and expression recognition were both impossible, discriminability of identity and expression mediated the relation between them. The discriminability effects revealed in present study could explain the conflicts between existing findings well.

Based on biomimetic pattern recognition theory, we proposed a novel speaker-independent continuous speech keyword-spotting algorithm. Without endpoint detection and division, we can get the minimum distance curve between continuous speech samples and every keyword-training net through the dynamic searching to the feature-extracted continuous speech. Then we can count the number of the keywords by investigating the vale-value and the numbers of the vales in the curve. Experiments of small vocabulary continuous speech with various speaking rate have got good recognition results and proved the validity of the algorithm.

Crowding, generally defined as the deleterious influence of nearby contours on visual discrimination, is ubiquitous in spatial vision. Specifically, long-range effects of non-overlapping distracters can alter the appearance of an object, making it unrecognizable. Theories in many domains, including vision computation and high-level attention, have been proposed to account for crowding. However, neither compulsory averaging model nor insufficient spatial esolution of attention provides an adequate explanation for crowding. The present study examined the effects of perceptual organization on crowding. We hypothesize that target-distractor segmentation in crowding is analogous to figure-ground segregation in Gestalt. When distractors can be grouped as a whole or when they are similar to each other but different from the target, the target can be distinguished from distractors. However, grouping target and distractors together by Gestalt principles may interfere with target-distractor separation. Six experiments were carried out to assess our theory. In experiments 1, 2, and 3, we manipulated the similarity between target and distractor as well as the configuration of distractors to investigate the effects of stimuli-driven grouping on target-distractor segmentation. In experiments 4, 5, and 6, we focused on the interaction between bottom-up and top-down processes of grouping, and their influences on target-distractor segmentation. Our results demonstrated that: (a) when distractors were similar to each other but different from target, crowding was eased; (b) when distractors formed a subjective contour or were placed regularly, crowding was also reduced; (c) both bottom-up and top-down processes could influence target-distractor grouping, mediating the effects of crowding. These results support our hypothesis that the figure-ground segregation and target-distractor segmentation in crowding may share similar processes. The present study not only provides a novel explanation for crowding, but also examines the processing bottleneck in object recognition. These findings have significant implications on computer vision and interface design as well as on clinical practice in amblyopia and dyslexia.
