The deposition of InxGa1-xAs (0.2 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.5) on (311)B GaAs surfaces using solid source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has been studied. Both AFM and photoluminescence emission showed that homogeneous quantum dots could be formed on (311)B GaAs surface when indium composition was around 0.4. Indium composition had a strong influence on the size uniformity and the lateral alignment of quantum dots. Compared with other surface orientation, (100) and (n11) A/B (n=1,2,3), photoluminescence measurement confirmed that (311)B surface is the most advantageous in fabricating uniform and dense quantum dots.

Self-assembled InxGa1-xAs quantum dots (QDs) on (311)A/B GaAs surfaces have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Spontaneously ordering alignment of InxGa1-xAs with lower In content around 0.3 have been observed. The direction of alignment orientation of the QDs formation differs from the direction of misorientation of the (311)B surface, and is strongly dependent upon the In content x. The ordering alignment become significantly deteriorated as the In content is increased to above 0.5 or as the QDs are formed on (100) or (311)A substrates. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. A series of binary SB blend samples with various overall volume fraction of PS (Phi(PS)) and different discrete distribution of the block length (denoted as d(PS) or d(PB)) were prepared by mixing various asymmetric poly(styrene)-block-poly(butadiene) (SB) block copolymers with a symmetric SB block copolymer. The influences of the external solvent field, composition, and the block length distribution on the morphologies of the blends in the thin films were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The experimental results revealed that after solvent annealing, the interface of the blend thin films depended mainly on the cooperative effects of the annealing solvent and the inherently interfacial curvature of the blends. Upon exposure to the saturated vapor of cyclohexane, which has preferential affinity for the PB block, a "threshold" of Phi(PS) (approximate 0.635-0.707) was found. Below such threshold, the influence of the annealing solvent played an important role on the interfacial curvature of the blend thin film.

The crystallization behavior and morphology of the crystalline-crystalline poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) diblock copolymer (PEO-b-PCL) was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and hot-stage polarized optical microscope (POM). The mutual effects between the PEO and PCL blocks were significant, leading to the obvious composition dependence of the crystallization behavior and morphology of PEO-b-PCL. In this study, the PEO block length was fixed (M-n = 5000) and the weight ratio of PCL/PEO was tailored by changing the PCL block length. Both blocks could crystallize in PEO-b-PCL with the PCL weight fraction (WFPCL) of 0.23-0.87. For the sample with the WFPCL of 0.36 or less, the PEO block crystallized first, resulting in the obvious confinement of the PCL block and vice versa for the sample with WFPCL of 0.43 or more. With increasing WFPCL, the crystallinity of PEO reduced continuously while the variation of the PCL crystallinity exhibited a maximum. The long period of PEO-b-PCL increased with increasing WFPCL from 0.16 to 0.50 but then decreased with the further increase of WFPCL due to the interaction of the respective variation of the thicknesses of the PEO and PCL crystalline lamellae.

Ge composition dependence on the Ge cell temperature has been studied during the growth of Si1-xGex by disilane and solid Ge molecular beam epitaxy at a substrate temperature of 500 degrees C. It is found that the composition x increases and then saturates when the Ge cell temperature increases, which is different from the composition-dependent behavior in growth at high temperature as well as in growth by molecular beam epitaxy using disilane and germane. The enhanced hydrogen desorption from a Ge site alone cannot account for this abnormal composition-variation behavior. We attribute this behavior to the increase of rate constant of H desorption on a Si site when the Ge cell temperature increases.

Low temperature (similar to 500 degrees C) growth properties of Si1-xGex by disilane and solid-Ge molecular beam epitaxy have been studied with an emphasis on surface morphology and growth kinetics. It is found that low-temperature growth(<500 degrees C) is in layer-by-layer mode and atomically-smooth surfaces have been obtained in as-grown samples with large Ge composition (>0.5). Ge composition dependence on substrate temperature, Ge cell temperature and disilane flow rate have been investigated. It is found that in low-temperature growth (less than or equal to 500 degrees C) and under large disilane flux, Ge composition increases with the increase of Ge flux and further increase of Ge flux leads to the saturation of Ge composition. Similar compositional dependence has been found at different growth temperatures. The saturated composition increases with the decrease of substrate temperature. The results can be explained if H desorption is assumed to occur from both Si and Ge monohydrides without diffusional exchange and the presence of Ge enhances H desorption on a Si site. A bulk alloy which consists of the single icosahedral quasicrystalline phase (I-phase) in Ti45Zr35Ni17CU3 alloy has been fabricated by mechanical alloying and subsequent pulse discharge sintering technique. Crystallographic structure analyses show that the bulk alloy is an I-phase. The transport properties of the bulk alloy are examined, and the results show that the room-temperature thermal conductivity is 5.347 W K-(1) m(-1), and the electrical conductivity decreases with increasing the temperature from 300 to 450K. The Seebeck coefficient is negative at the temperature range from 300 to 360K, and changes to positive from 370 to 450K. Hall effect measurements indicate the bulk I-phase alloy has a high carrier concentration. The specific heat capacity increases when the temperature increases from 280 to 324 K.

The glass transition temperature (T-g) of mixtures of polystyrene (PS) with different molecular weight and of blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-p-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and polystyrene with different molecular weight (DMWPS) was studied by a DSC method. For the whole range of composition, the curves of T-g vs composition obtained by experiment were compared with predictions from the Fox, Gordon-Taylor, Couchman and Lu-Weiss, equations. It was found that the experimental results were not in agreement with those from the Fox, Gordon-TayIor and Couchman equations for the binary mixtures of DMWPS, where the interaction parameter chi was approximately zero. However, for the blends PPO/DMWPS (chi < 0), with an increase of molecular weight of PS, it was shown that the experimental results fitted well with those obtained from the Couchman, Gordon-Taylor and Fox equations, respectively. Furthermore, the Gordon-Taylor equation was nearly identical to the Lu-Weiss equation when \chi\ was not very large. Further, the dependence of the change of heat capacity associated with the glass transition (Delta C-p) on the molecular weight of PS was investigated and an empirical equation was presented. Blends of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) with poly(ether sulphone) and two phenolphthalein-based polymers, viz. phenolphthalein poly(ether ether sulphone) and phenolphthalein poly(ether ether ketone) were prepared by casting from a common solvent and studied by differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that all the PVP blends are miscible and show a single, composition-dependent glass transition temperature (T(g)). The T(g)-composition dependence has been analysed by the use of the Gordon-Taylor equation. The values of the k parameter in the Gordon-Taylor equation obtained are all not high for the three pairs, in accordance with the fact that there is no strongly specific interaction between PVP and any of the other polymers.

Thin films of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(styrene-ran-acrylonitrile) (SAN) blend can phase separate upon heating to above its critical temperature. Temperature dependence of the surface composition and morphology in the blend thin film upon thermal treatment was studied using in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that in addition to phase separation, the blend component preferentially diffused to and aggregated at the surface of the blend film, leading to the variation of surface composition with temperature. At 185 degrees C, above the critical temperature, the amounts of PMMA and SAN phases were comparable.

Microphase separation of binary mixed A/B polymer brushes exposed to different solvents is studied using Single-Chain-in-Mean-Field simulations. Effects of solvent quality and selectivity, grafting density, composition, and chain-length asymmetry are systematically investigated, and diagrams of morphologies in various solvents are constructed as a function of grafting density and composition or chain-length asymmetry. The structure of the microphase segregated morphologies lacks long-range periodic order, and it is analyzed quantitatively Using Minkowski measures.

We report a method for estimating the positions of charge transfer (CT) bands in Eu3+-doped complex crystals. The environmental factor ( he) influencing the CT energy is presented. he consists of four chemical bond parameters: the covalency, the bond volume polarization, the presented charge of the ligand in the chemical bond, and the coordination number of the central ion. These parameters are calculated with the dielectric theory of complex crystals. The relationship between the experimental CT energies and calculated environmental factors was established by an empirical formula. The calculated values are in good agreement with the experimental results. Such a relationship was confirmed by detailed analysis. In addition, our method is also useful to predict the charge-transfer position of any other rare earth ion.

Raman scattering (RS) experiments have been performed for simultaneous determination of Mn composition and strain in Ga1-xMnxSb thin films grown on GaSb substrate by liquid phase epitaxy technique. The Raman spectra obtained from various Ga1-xMnxSb samples show only GaSb-like phonon modes whose frequency positions are found to have Mn compositional dependence. With the combination of epilayer strain model, RS and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) experiments, the compositional dependence of GaSb-like LO phonon frequency is proposed both in strained and unstrained conditions. The proposed relationships are used to evaluate Mn composition and strain from the Ga1-xMnxSb samples. The results obtained from the RS data are found to be in good agreement with those determined independently by the EDX analysis. Furthermore, the frequency positions of MnSb-like phonon modes are suggested by reduced-mass model. (C) 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

InAs self-organized nanostructures were grown with variant deposition thickness and growth rate on closely matched InAlAs/InP by molecular-beam epitaxy. The structural properties. of InAs and InAlAs layer were studied. It is found that the InAs morphology is insensitive to the growth conditions. Transmission electron microscopy and reflectance difference spectroscopy measurements show that the InAlAs matrix presents lateral composition modulation which gives birth to surface anisotropy. Based on the dependence of the InAs morphology on the anisotropy of the InAlAs layer, a modified Stranski-Krastanow growth mode is presented to describe the growth of the nanostructure on a composition-modulated surface.

GexSi1-x epilayers were grown at 700-900 degrees C by atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition. GexSi1-x, Si and Ge growth rates as functions of GeH4 flow are considered separately to investigate how the growth of the epilayers is enhanced. Arrhenius plots of Si and Ge incorporation in the GexSi1-x growth show the activation energies associated with the growth rates are about 1.2 eV for silicon and 0.4 eV for germanium, indicating that Si growth is limited by surface kinetics and Ge growth is limited by mass transport. A model based on this idea is proposed and used to simulate the growth of GexSi1-x. The calculation and experiment are in good agreement. Growth rate and film composition increase monotonically with growth pressure; both observations are explained by the model.
