Based on the aromatic dicarboxylic acid and N-donor ligands with different conformations, four Zn(II) metal-organic frameworks, namely [Zn(mfda)(L-1)](1), [Zn-2(mfda)(2)(L-2)]center dot DMF center dot H2O (2), [Zn-2(mfda)(2)(L-3)(H2O)]center dot DMF (3) and [Zn-2(mfda)(2)(L-4)] (4) have been synthesized (mfda = 9,9-dimethylfluorene-2,7-dicarboxylate anion, L-1 = 1,10-phenanthroline, L-2 = 4,4 '-bipyridine, L-3 = 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-ocadiazole and L-4 = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction has revealed that all compounds exhibit entangled structures. Compound 1 is composed of 1D zigzag chains that are entangled through the pi-pi stacking interactions to generate a three-fold interpenetrating diamond-like networks.

The spherical Lindquist type polyoxometalate, Mo6O192-, has been used as a noncoordinating anionic template for the construction of novel three-dimensional lanthanide-aromatic monocarboxylate dimer supramolecular networks [Ln(2)(DNBA)(4)(DMF)(8)][Mo6O19] (Ln = La 1, Ce 2, and Eu 3, DNBA = 3,5-dinitrobenzoate, DMF = dimethylformamide). The title compounds are characterized by elemental analyses, IR, and single-crystal X-ray diffractions. X-ray diffraction experiments reveal that two Ln(III) ions are bridged by four 3,5-dinitrobenzoate anions as asymmetrically bridging ligands, leading to dimeric cores, [Ln(2)(DNBA)(4)(DMF)(8)](2+); [Ln(2)(DNBA)(4)(DMF)(8)](2+) groups are joined together by pi-pi stacking interactions between the aromatic groups to form a two-dimensional grid-like network; the 2-D supramolecular layers are further extended into 3-D supramolecular networks with 1-D box-like channels by hydrogen-bonding interactions, in which hexamolybdate polyanions reside. The compounds represent the first examples of 3-D carboxylate-bridged lanthanide dimer supramolecular "host" networks formed by pi-pi stacking and hydrogen-bonding interactions encapsulating noncoordinating "guest" polyoxoanion species. The fluorescent activity of compound 3 is reported.

A supramolecular complex [Cu(phen)(2)H2O]{[Cu(phen)(H2O)](2)[C6AS]}center dot 2.5H(2)O (phen = 1,10'-phenanthroline and C6AS = p-sulfonatocalix[6]arene) has been synthesized under hydrothermal condition, and characterized by IR spectroscopy, TG analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. In the structure, unprecedented 1D ({[Cu(phen)(H2O)](2)[C(6)AS]}(2-))(n) coordination chains (exactly being belts) are stacked into some 2D layers by the pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking interactions, which are further interconnected into a 3D extended structure by hydrogen bonding.

One mu-dichloro bridged diiridium complex and three mononuclear iridium(III) complexes based on the 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives as cyclometalated ligands and acetylacetonate (acac) or dithiolates O,O'-diethyldithiophosphate (Et(2)dtp) or N,N'-diethyldithiocarbamate (Et(2)dtc) as ancillary ligands have been synthesized and systematically studied by X-ray diffraction analysis. The results reveal that three mononuclear complexes all adopt distorted octahedral coordination geometry around the iridium center by two chelating ligands with cis-C-C and trans-N-N dispositions, which have the same coordination mode as the diiridium dimer. The dinuclear complex crystallizes in the monoclinic system and space group C2/c, whereas three mononuclear iridium complexes are all triclinic system and space group P(1) over bar. In the stacking structure of the dimer, one-dimensional tape-like chains along the b-axis are formed by hydrogen bondings, which are strengthened by pi stacking interactions between phenyl rings of 1,3,4-oxadiazole ligands. Then these chains assemble a three-dimensional alternating peak and valley fused wave-shape structure. In each stacking structure of three mononuclear complexes, two molecules form a dimer by the C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bondings, and these dimers are connected by pi stacking interactions along the b-axis, constructing a zigzag chain.

The reactions of freshly prepared Cu(OH)(2).xH(2)O and Cu(OH)(2-2y)(CO3)(y).zH(2)O precipitates with imidazole and adipic acid in CH3OH/H2O at pH = 5.4 yielded CU(C3N2H4)(2)(HL)(2) 1 and CU(C3N2H4)(2)L 2, respectively. Complex 1 consists of ribbon-like polymeric chains (1)(infinity)[CU(C3N2H4)(2)(HL)(4/2)], in which the octahedrally coordinated Cu atoms are doubly bridged by bis-monodentate hydrogen adipato ligands. The interchain N-H...O hydrogen bonding interactions are responsible for supramolecular assembly of the polymeric chains into open 3D frameworks and two-fold interpenetration of the resulting open frameworks completes the crystal structure of 1. Within complex 2, the Cu atoms are penta-coordinated to form CuN2O3 square pyramids and condensed into CU2N4O4 dimers, which are doubly bridged by twisted bis-monodentate adipato ligands into polymeric chains (1)(infinity)([CU(C3N2H4)(2)](2)L-4/2) with 4- and 18-membered rings progressing alternatively. The polymeric chains are assembled due to interchain N-H...O hydrogen bonding interactions. The thermal and magnetic behaviors of 1 and 2 is discussed.

A new centrosymmetrical heterotrinuclear complex, {[Cu(oxbe)](2)Co(H2O)(2)}.2DMF.DMA with 2D supramolecular structure, has been obtained by the self-assembly of a dissymmetrical building block [Cu(oxbe)](-) with bivalent metal ion Co2+, where H(3)oxbe is dissymmetrical ligand N-benzoato-N'-(2-aminoethyl)oxamido, DMF = dimethylformamide, DMA = dimethylamine. Its structure was determined by single crystal X-ray analysis. The molecular structure is centrosymmetrical with the cobalt atom lying on an inversion center. Through the hydrogen bonds and d-pi stacking interactions, a 2D supramolecular structure is formed. This study exemplifies a new method for the assembly of supramolecular structure using a dissymmetrical brick. Magnetic susceptibility measurements (5-300 K) indicate that the central cobalt and terminal copper metal ions are antiferromagnetically coupled with J = -23.1 cm(-1).

The oxamido-bridged heterobinuclear copper(II)-nickel(II) complex, [Cu(oxbe)Ni(phen)(2)]ClO4.3H(2)O (1) and homotrinuclear nickel(11) complex {[Ni(oxbe)](2)Ni(H2O)(2)}.2.5DMF (2) have been synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR, EPR. and electronic spectra and magnetic susceptibility, where H(3)oxbe is dissymmetrical ligand N-benzoato-N'-(2-aminoethyl)ox-amido, phen = 1.10-phenanthroline, DMF = dimethylformamide. Complex I has an extended oxamido-bridged structure consisting of planar copper(II) and octahedral nickel(II) ions. The chi(M) and mu(eff) versus T plots of 1 is typical of an antiferromagnetically coupled Cu(II)-Ni(II,) pair with a spin-doublet ground state, and magnetic analysis leads to J = -57.1 cm(-1). The molecular structure of 2 is centrosymmetrical, with one octahedral nickel atom lying at an inversion center and two terminal Ni(II) atoms in approximately square planar environment. Through the hydrogen bonds and pi- pi stacking interactions, a 2D supramolecular structure is formed.

A new bimetallic cluster complex with the formula [{Co(phen)(2)}(2)V4O12](H2O)-H-. was synthesized from the hydrothermal reaction of V2O5, H2C2O4, Co(NO3)(2), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), (C4H9)(4)NOH and water. The compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic system with space group Pbcn and unit cell parameters a = 19.106(3) Angstrom, b = 15.250(3) Angstrom, c = 16.321(2) Angstrom, V = 4755.4(13) Angstrom(3), Z = 4 and R = 0.0318. The bimetallic cluster complex [{Co(phen)(2)}(2)V4O12](H2O)-H-. is composed of a discrete V4O124- cluster eovalently attached to two [Co(phen)(2)](2+) fragments and the discrete hexanuclear bimetallic clusters of [{Co(phen)(2)}(V4O12)-V-2](H2O)-H-. are further extended into interesting three-dimensional supermolecular arrays via pi-pi stacking interactions of phen groups. Other characterizations by elemental analysis, IR, and thermal analysis are also described.

Competition dialysis was used to study the interactions of 13 substituted aromatic diamidine compounds with 13 nucleic acid structures and sequences. The results show a striking selectivity of these compounds for the triplex structure poly dA:(poly dT)(2), a novel aspect of their interaction with nucleic acids not previously described. The triplex selectivity of selected compounds was confirmed by thermal denaturation studies. Triplex selectivity was found to be modulated by the location of amidine substiuents on the core phenyl-furan-phenyl ring scaffold. Molecular models were constructed to rationalize the triplex selectivity of DB359, the most selective compound in the series. Its triplex selectivity was found to arise from optimal ring stacking on base triplets, along with proper positioning of its amidine substituents to occupy the minor and the major-minor grooves of the triplex. New insights into the molecular recognition of nucleic acid structures emerged from these studies, adding to the list of available design principles for selectively targeting DNA and RNA.
