The interlaminar fracture behaviour of carbon fibre-reinforced bismaleimide (BMI) composites prepared by using a new modified BMI matrix has been investigated by various methods. Laminates of three typical stacking sequences were evaluated. Double cantilever beam, end-notch flexure and edge-delamination tension tests were conducted under conventional conditions and in a scanning electron microscope. The strain energy release rates in Mode I and Mode III G(lc) and G(llc), as well as the total strain energy release rate, G(mc), have been determined and found to be higher than those for laminates with an epoxy matrix. Dynamic delamination propagation was also studied. The toughening mechanisms are discussed.

A temperature-controlled poolboiling (TCPB) device was developed to perform poolboiling heat transfer studies at both normal gravity and microgravity. A platinum wire of 60 μm in diameter and 30 mm in length was simultaneously used as heaters and thermometers. The heater resistance, and thus the heater temperature, was kept constant by a feedback circuit. The fluid was R113 at 0.1 Mpa and subcooled by 24 nominally for all cases. The results of the experiments at both normal gravity and microgravityin the Drop Tower Beijing were presented. Nucleate and two-mode transition boiling were observed. For nucleate boiling, the heat transfer was slightly enhanced, namely no more than 10% increase of the heat flux was obtained inmicrogravity, while the bubble pattern is dramatically altered by the variation of the acceleration. For two-mode transition boiling, about 20% decrease of the heat flux was obtained, although the part of film boiling was receded inmicrogravity. A scale analysis on the Marangoni convection surrounding bubble in the process of subcooled nucleate poolboiling was also presented. The characteristic velocity of the lateral motion and its observability were obtained approximately. The predictions consist with theexperimental observations.

The formation mechanism of water film (or crack) in saturated sand is analyzed numerically It is shown that there will be no stable "water film" in the saturated sand even if the strength of the skeleton is zero and no positions are choked. The stable water films initiate and grow if the choking state keeps unchangeable once the fluid velocities of one position decreases to zero in a liquefied sand column. A simplified method for evaluating the thickness of water film is presented according to a solidification wave theory. The theoretical results obtained by the simplified method are compared with the numerical results and the experimental results of Kokusho.

Deformation microstructures have been investigated in nanocrystalline (nc) Ni with grain sizes in the 50-100 nm range. It was found that deformation twinning started to occur in grains of similar to 90 nm, and its propensity increased with decreasing grain size. In most of the nc grains dislocations were observed as well, in the form of individual dislocations and dipoles. It is concluded that dislocation-mediated plasticity dominates for grain sizes in the upper half, i.e. 50-100 nm, of the nanocrystalline regime. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

In this paper, the mechanical behavior of 30CrMnSiA steel after heating at a high rate are investigated experimentally and theoretically, including a detailed discussion of the effects of strain rate and temperature. Two constitutive models are presented to describe the mechanical response of this material after heating at a high rate, and verified by experimental results. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. The response of porous Al2O3 to nanoindentation was investigated at microscopic scales (nm-mu m) and under ultra-low loads from 5 to 90 mN with special attention paid to the dependence of the load-depth behaviour to sample porosity. It was found that the load-depth curves manifest local responses typical of the various porous structures investigated. This is particularly clear for the residual deformation after load removal. Similarly, the limited mean pressure of the sample containing small grains and interconnected pores is consistent with its porous structure. By comparison, the samples with larger grain size and various porous structures exhibit higher pressures and smaller residual deformations that can be attributed to the mechanical response of the solid phase. Anodic bonding with thin films of metal or alloy as an intermediate layer, finds increasing applications in micro/nanoelectromechanical systems. At the bonding temperature of 350 degrees C, voltage of 400 V, and 30 min duration, the anodic bonding is completed between Pyrex glass and crystalline silicon coated with an aluminum thin film with a thickness comprised between 50 and 230 nm. Sodium-depleted layers and dendritic nanostructures were observed in Pyrex 7740 glass adjacent to the bonding interface. The sodium depletion width does not increase remarkably with the thickness of aluminum film. The dendritic nanostructures result from aluminum diffusion into the Pyrex glass. This experimental research is expected to enhance the understanding of how the depletion layer and dendritic nanostructures affect the quality of anodic bonding. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V.
