High amounts of acid compounds in bio-oil not only lead to the deleterious properties such as corrosiveness and high acidity, but also set up many obstacles to its wide applications. By hydrotreating the bio-oil under mild conditions, some carboxylic acid compounds could be converted to alcohols which would esterify with the unconverted acids in the bio-oil to produce esters. The properties of the bio-oil could be improved by this method. In the paper, the raw bio-oil was produced by vacuum pyrolysis of pine sawdust. The optimal production conditions were investigated. A series of nickel-based catalysts were prepared. Their catalytic activities were evaluated by upgrading of model compound (glacial acetic acid). Results showed that the reduced Mo-10Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst had the highest activity with the acetic acid conversion of 33.2%. Upgrading of the raw bio-oil was investigated over reduced Mo-10Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. After the upgrading process, the pH value of the bio-oil increased from 2.16 to 2.84. The water content increased from 46.2 wt.% to 58.99 wt.%. The H element content in the bio-oil increased from 6.61 wt.% to 6.93 wt.%. The dynamic viscosity decreased a little. The results of GC-MS spectrometry analysis showed that the ester compounds in the upgraded bio-oil increased by 3 times. it is possible to improve the properties of bio-oil by hydrotreating and esterifying carboxyl group compounds in the bio-oil.

The behavior of different species during the temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) of methane over various catalysts is traced by an online mass spectrometer, It is demonstrated that the transformation of MoO3 to molybdenum carbide hinders the activation of methane as well as the succeeding aromatization in the TPSR, If this transformation process is done before the reaction, the temperature needed for methane activation and benzene formation will be greatly lowered (760 and 847 K, respectively). On the basis of comparison of the catalytic behavior of molybdenum supported on different zeolites, it is suggested that the initial activation of methane is the rate-determining step of this reaction. For the cobalt catalysts supported on HMCM-22 or Mo catalysts supported on TiO2, no benzene formation could be observed during the TPSR, However, the prohibition of benzene formation is different in nature over these two catalysts: the former lacks the special properties exhibited by molybdenum carbide, which can continuously activate methane even when multiple layers of carbonaceous species are formed on its surface, while the latter cannot accomplish the aromatization reaction since there are no Bronsted acid sites to which the activated intermediates can migrate, although the activation of methane can be achieved on it. Only for the catalysts that possess both of these properties, together with the special channel structure of zeolite, can efficient methane aromatization be accomplished. (C) 2000 Academic Press.

A new polyoxometalate [Co(phen)(3)](2)[HPMo4V Mo-4(VI) V-6(IV) M2O44]center dot 4H(2)O (M = 0.78Mo(V)+ 0.22V(IV)) 1 was hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by IR, elemental analyses, X-ray photoelectron spectrum, ESR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compound is in the triclinic space group P (1) over bar with a = 12.0953(7) angstrom, b = 14.0182(6) angstrom, c = 14.6468(7) angstrom, V=2402.55(18) angstrom(3), alpha = 105.134(2), beta = 91.841(3), gamma = 91.401(2), Z = 1, and R-1 (wR(2)) = 0.0617 (0.1701). The compound was prepared from tetra-capped pseudo-Kepin with phosphorus-centered polyoxoanions [PMo8V6M2O44](5-) , [Co(phen)(3)](2+) cations and linked through hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking interaction into three-dimensional supramolecular framework. Astudy of the magnetic properties of 1 demonstrates that it exhibits antiferromagnetic coupling interactions.

The conversion of n-C4H10 was undertaken on MoO3/HZSM-5 catalyst at 773-973K and the phases of molybdenum species were detected by XRD. The XRD results show that bulk MoO3 on HZSM-5 can be readily reduced by n-C4H10 to MoO2 at 773 K and MoO2 can be gradually carburized to molybdenum carbide above 813 K. The molybdenum carbide formed from the carburization of MoO2 with n-C4H10 below 893 K is alpha-MoC1-x with fcc-structure, while hcp-molybdenum carbide formed above 933 K. During the evolution of MoO3 to MoO2 (>773 K) or the carburization of MoO2 to molybdenum carbide (>813 K), deep oxidation, cracking and coke deposition are serious, in particular at higher reaction temperatures, these lead to the poor selectivity to aromatics. Aromatization of n-C4H10 can proceed catalytically on both Mo2C/HZSM-5 and MoO2/HZSM-5, the distribution of the products for the two catalysts is similar below 813 K, but the, activity for Mo2C/HZSM-5 is much higher than that for MoO2/HZSM-5. The aromatization of methane over a Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst was carried out in the presence of oxygen. It is shown that the addition of a small amount of oxygen is beneficial to improve the durability of the catalyst. UV-Raman spectra disclose that the carbonaceous deposits formed on the HZSM-5 are mainly polyolefinic and aromatic, while that on the Mo/HZSM-5 is mainly polyaromatic. The small amount of O-2 added may partly remove the coke deposits on the active sites and keep the catalyst as MoOxCy/HZSM-5, thus resulting in an improvement of the catalytic performance of the Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst.
