In this paper, we have described a chiral binaphthyl-based fluorescent organogel. Very interestingly, similar to sonocrystallisation of organics, ultrasound can promote the gelation while it cannot occur spontaneously at relatively high temperature or low concentration. The fluorescence enhancement of the gel obtained via ultrasound irradiation is observed. In solution there exist rapid dynamic equilibria between (S)-1 oligomers. The association interactions both between gelator molecules and between solvent and gelator molecules could together effect the helical growth of distorted (S)-1 nanocrystals.

A simple and efficient method has been established for the selective synthesis of mesoporous and nanorod CeVO4 with different precursors by sonochemical method. CeVO4 nanorod can be simply synthesized by ultrasound irradiation of Ce(NO3)(3) and NH4VO3 in aqueous solution without any surfactant or template. While mesoporous CeVO4 with high specific surface area can be prepared with Ce(NO3)(3), V2O5 and NaOH in the same way. Mesoporous CeVO4 has a specific surface area of 122 m(2) g(-1) and an average pore size of 5.2 nm; CeVO4 nanorods have a diameter of about 5 nm, and a length of 100-150 nm. The ultrasound irradiation and ammonia in the reactive solution are two key factors in the formation of such rod-like products. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermal analyses (DTA), UV/vis absorption spectroscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) were applied for characterization of the as-prepared products.

YVO4 nanocrystals doped with 10.0 mol% Eu3+ have been synthesized from an aqueous solution of ( Y, Eu)( NO3) (3) and NH4VO3 with or without ultrasonic irradiation. The ultrasonic irradiation has a strong effect on the morphology of the YVO4: Eu particles. The spindle-like particles with an equatorial diameter of 90 - 150 nm and a length of 250 - 300 nm could be obtained with ultrasonic irradiation, whereas only nanoparticles were produced without ultrasonic irradiation. The photoluminescence intensity of YVO4: Eu of the spindle-like particles was largely improved compared with that of the nanoparticles. The possible formation mechanism of the spindle-like particles of YVO4: Eu with the application of ultrasonic irradiation was discussed in this paper.

A simple, efficient and quick method has been established for the synthesis of CePO4:Tb nanorods and CePO4:Tb/LaPO4 core/shell nanorods via ultrasound irradiation of inorganic salt aqueous solution under ambient conditions for 2 h. The as-prepared products were characterized by means of powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction ( SAED), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) spectra and lifetimes. TEM micrographs show that all of the as-prepared cerium phosphate products have rod-like shape, and have a relatively high degree of crystallinity and uniformity. HRTEM micrographs and SAED results prove that these nanorods are single crystalline in nature. The emission intensity and lifetime of the CePO4:Tb/LaPO4 core/shell nanorods increased significantly with respect to those of CePO4: Tb core nanorods under the same conditions. A substantial reduction in reaction time as well as reaction temperature is observed compared with the hydrothermal process.

MeV An irradiation leads to a shape change of polystyrene (PS) and SiO2 particles from spherical to ellipsoidal, with an aspect ratio that can be precisely controlled by the ion fluence. Sub-micrometer PS and SiO2 particles were deposited on copper substrates and irradiated with Au ions at 230 K, using an ion energy and fluence ranging from 2 to 10 MeV and 1 x 10(14) ions/cm(2) to 1 x 10(15) ions/cm(2). The mechanisms of anisotropic deformation of PS and SiO2 particles are different because of their distinct physical and chemical properties. At the start of irradiation, the volume of PS particles decrease, then the aspect ratio increases with fluence, whereas for SiO2 particles the volume remains constant. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. We report on the upconversion luminescence of a pure YVO4 single crystal excited by an infrared femtosecond laser. The luminescent spectra show that the upconversion luminescence comes from the transitions from the lowest excited states T-3(1), T-3(2) to the ground state (1)A(1) of the VO43-. The dependence of the fluorescence intensity on the pump power density of laser indicates that the conversion of infrared irradiation to visible emission is dominated by three-photon excitation process. We suggest that the simultaneous absorption of three infrared photons promotes the VO43- to excited states, which quickly cascade down to lowest excited states, and radiatively relax to ground states, resulting in the broad characteristic fluorescence of VO43-. The ablation in zinc selenide (ZnSe) crystal is studied by using 150-fs, 800-nm laser system. The images of the ablation pit measured by scanning electronic microscope (SEM) show no thermal stress and melting dynamics. The threshold fluence is measured to be 0.7 J/cm2. The ultrafast ablation dynamics is studied by using pump and probe method. The result suggests that optical breakdown and ultrafast melting take place in ZnSe irradiated under femtosecond laser pulses.

The influence of focus spot and target thickness on multi-keV x-ray sources generated by 2 ns duration laser heated solid targets are investigated on the Shenguang II laser facility. In the case of thick-foil targets, the experimental data and theoretical analysis show that the emission volume of the x-ray sources is sensitive to the laser focus spot and proportional to the 3 power of the focus spot size. The steady x-ray flux is proportional to the 5/3 power of the focus spot size of the given laser beam in our experimental condition. In the case of thin-foil targets, experimental data show that there is an optimal foil thickness corresponding to the given laser parameters. With the given laser beam, the optimal thin-foil thickness is proportional to the -2/3 power of the focus spot size, and the optimal x-ray energy of thin foil is independent of focus spot size. Near-infrared to ultraviolet upconversion luminescence was observed in the Pr3+ :Y2SiO5 crystal with 120 fs, 800 mn infrared laser irradiation. The observed emissions at around 270 nm and 305 nm could be assigned to 5d -> 4f transitions of Pr3+ ions. The relationship between the upconversion luminescence intensity and the pump power of the femtosecond laser reveals that the UV emission belongs to simultaneous three-photon absorption induced upconversion luminescence. We report micromodification of Eu element distribution in a silicate glass with femtosecond laser irradiation. Elemental analysis shows that the content of Eu decreased at the focal point and increased in a ring-shaped region around the focal point, which indicates migration of Eu ions has been induced by the femtosecond laser irradiation. Confocal fluorescence spectra demonstrate that the fluorescence intensity of Eu3+ ions increased by 20% in the laser-induced, Eu-enriched, ring-shaped region compared with that for nonirradiated glass. The mechanism for the laser induced change in fluorescence properties of Eu3+ has been investigated. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

We investigate the mechanism of formation of periodic void arrays inside fused silica and BK7 glass irradiated by a tightly focused femtosecond (fs) laser beam. Our results show that the period of each void array is not uniform along the laser propagation direction, and the average period of the void array decreases with increasing pulse number and pulse energy. We propose a mechanism in which a standing electron plasma wave created by the interference of a fs-laser-driven electron wave and its reflected wave is responsible for the formation of the periodic void arrays.

Gamma-ray irradiation-induced color centers in Al2O3 crystals grown by temperature gradient techniques (TGT) under a strongly reducing atmosphere were studied. The transition F+ -> F takes place during the irradiation process. Glow discharge mass spectroscopy (GDMS) and annealing treatments show that Fe3+ impurity ions are present in the crystals. A composite (F+-Fe3+) defect was presented to explain the origin of the 255 nm band absorption in the TGT-Al2O3 crystals. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This letter demonstrates an alternative method to form gallium silicate glass ceramics using high-energy electron irradiation. Compared with glass ceramics obtained from the conventional thermal treatment method, the distribution and crystal sizes of the precipitated Ga2O3 nanoparticles are the same. An advantage of this method is that the spatial distribution of the precipitated nanoparticles can be easily controlled. However, optically active dopants Ni2+ ions do not participate in the precipitation during electron irradiation. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

A lens array composed of edge-softened elements is used to improve on-target irradiation uniformity in the Shenguang II Laser Facility, with which a Fresnel pattern of suppressed diffraction peaks is obtained. Additional uniformity can be reached by reducing short-wavelength interference speckles inside the pattern when the technique of smoothing by spectral dispersion is also used. Two-dimensional performance of irradiation is simulated and the results indicate that a pattern of steeper edges and a flat top can be achieved with this joint technique.
