Multiwalled carbon nanotube-supported Pt (Pt/MWNT) nanocomposites were prepared by both the aqueous solution reduction of a Pt salt (HCHO reduction) and the reduction of a Pt ion salt in ethylene glycol solution. For comparison, a Pt/XC-72 nanocomposite was also prepared by the EG method. The Pt/MWNT catalyst prepared by the EG method has a high and homogeneous dispersion of spherical Pt metal particles with a narrow particle-size distribution. TEM images show that the Pt particle size is in the range of 2-5 nm with a peak at 2.6 nm, which is consistent with 2.5 nm obtained from the XRD broadening calculation. Surface chemical modifications of MWNTs and water content in EG solvent are found to be the key factors in depositing Pt particles on MWNTs. In the case of the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) test, the Pt/MWNT catalyst prepared by EG reduction is slightly superior to the catalyst prepared by aqueous reduction and displays significantly higher performance than the Pt/XC-72 catalyst. These differences in catalytic performance between the MWNT-supported or the carbon black XC-72-supported catalysts are attributed to a greater dispersion of the supported Pt particles when the EG method is used, in contrast to aqueous HCHO reduction and to possible unique structural and higher electrical properties when contrasting MWNTs to carbon black XC-72 as a support.

Tetralin hydrogenation (HYD) and thiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS) were studied for the supported MoS2 and WS2 sulfides, either non-promoted or promoted with Co and Ni. The supports used were ZrO2, alumina-stabilized TiO2 and pure alumina. Preparation of catalysts included presulfidation of non-promoted system with subsequent addition of promoter and resulfidation. It has been found that the nature of promoter plays determining role for the catalytic performance. The most active in both HYD and HDS reactions are Ni-promoted Mo and W catalysts, supported on ZrO2. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The reduction behaviors of the supported platinum-iron catalysts and their comparison with supported iron catalysts were studied by TPR (temperature-programmed reduction)-in situ Fe-57 MBS (Mossbauer spectroscopy). The results indicated that the TPR processes of all Fe-containing catalysts were different from that of bulk alpha-Fe2O3. There were interactions between Pt, Fe and the gamma-Al2O3 or SiO2 support for the Pt-Fe/gamma-Al2O3 and Pt-Fe/SiO2 catalysts. All the iron-containing catalysts show that Fe3+ was highly dispersed on the support (gamma-Al2O3 and SiO2) before reduction. No Fe-0 was found in the reduction processes. The Fe3+ was reduced to Fe2+ in tetrahedral vacancy first for the reduction of the Pt-Fe/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. No Fe2+ in octahedral vacancy was found in the reduction of the Pt-Fe/SiO2 catalyst. Adding Pt to Fe/support (gamma-Al2O3 or SiO2) could promote the reduction of the Fe species. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Total oxidation of chlorinated aromatics on supported manganese oxide catalysts was investigated. The catalysts have been prepared by wet impregnation method and characterized by XRD and TPR. Among the catalysts with the supports of TiO(2), Al(2)O(3) and SiO(2), titania supported catalyst (MnO(x)/TiO(2)) gives the highest catalytic activity. MnO(x)/TiO(2) (Mn loading, 1.9 wt.%) shows the total oxidation of chlorobenzene at about 400 degreesC. The activity can be stable for over 82 h except for the first few hours. At lower Mn loadings for MnO(x)/TiO(2), only one reduction peak appears at about 400 degreesC due to the highly dispersed manganese oxide. With the increase of Mn loading, another reduction peak emerges at about 500 degreesC, which is close to the reduction peak of bulk Mn(2)O(3) at 520 degreesC. TPR of the used catalyst is totally different from that of the fresh one indicating that the chemical state of the active species is changed during the chlorobenzene oxidation. The characterization studies of MnO(x)/TiO(2) showed that the highly dispersed MnO(x) is the precursor of the active phase, which can be converted into the active phase, mainly oxychlorinated manganese (MnO(y)Cl(z)), under working conditions of chlorobenzene oxidation. Hydrogenation of o-chloronitrobenzene (o-CNB) to o-chloroaniline (o-CAN) with Pd/C has been investigated in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) at 308 K. The influences of several parameters such as CO2, H-2 pressures, Fd metal particle size and reaction time have been discussed. CO2 pressure presented markedly effects on the reaction rate and product selectivity under the reaction conditions used, the selectivity to o-CAN at CO2 pressure from 8 to 13 MPa (supercritical region) was larger than that at CO2 pressure below 6 MPa (subcritical region).

The selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) was investigated using rice husk-based porous carbon (RHCs) supported platinum catalysts in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2). The effects of surface chemistry treatment of the support and the reaction phase behavior have been examined. The Pt/H-RHCs (HNO3-pretreated) was more active for CAL hydrogenation compared with Pt/NH3 - RHCs (NH3 center dot H2O-pretreated). The Pt/RHCs catalyst exhibited a higher selectivity to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) compared with commercial catalyst of Pt/C, which is relative to the micro - mesoporosity structure of the RHCs.

A prominent methanol-tolerant characteristic of the PtCeOx/C electrocatalyst was found during oxygen reduction reaction process. The carbon-supported platinum modified with cerium oxide (PtCeOx/C) as cathode electrocatalyst for direct methanol fuel cells was prepared via a simple and effective route. The synthesized electrocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the cerium oxide within PtCeOx/C present in an amorphous form on the carbon support surface and the PtCeOx/C possesses almost similar disordered morphological structure and slightly smaller particle size compared with the unmodified Pt/C catalyst.

A new electrocatalysis of carbon materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on Pt/C catalysts was discovered. It was found that there exist two kinds of electroactive sites on these supports of carbon materials, which can effectively electrocatalyze the reduction of peroxide intermediated from oxygen reduction on Pt, as this provides continuous driving force to move the equilibrium toward the production of peroxide from ORR.

In the present paper, a 60 h life-time test of a direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) at a current density of 20 mA cm(-2) (the beginning 38 h) and 40 mA cm(-2) (the last 22 h) was carried out. After the life-time test, the MEA could not achieve the former performance. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) were employed to characterize the anode and cathode catalyst before and after the life-time test. The XRD and TEM results showed that the particle size of the anode catalyst increased from 2.3 to 3.3 nm and the cathode from 3.0 to 4.6 nm. The EDX results of PtSn/C anode catalysts before and after the life-time test indicated that the content of the oxygen and tin, especially the content of the platinum, decreased prominently after the life-time test. The results suggest that the agglomeration of electrocatalysts, the destruction of the anode catalyst together with the fuel/water crossover from anode to cathode concurrently contribute to the performance degradation of the DEFC. A simple approach combining sonication and sol-gel chemistry was employed to synthesize silica coated carbon nanotube (CNTs) coaxial nanocables. It was found that a homogeneous silica layer can be coated on the surface of the CNTs. This method is simple, rapid, and reproducible. Furthermore, gold nanoparticle supported coaxial nanocables were facilely obtained using amino-functionalized silica as the interlinker. Furthermore, to reduce the cost of Pt in fuel cells, designing a Pt shell on the surface of a noble metal such as gold or silver is necessary. High-density gold/platinum hybrid nanoparticles were located on the surface of I-D coaxial nanocables with high surface-to-volume ratios. It was found that this hybrid nanomaterial exhibits a high electrocatalytic activity for enhancing oxygen reduction (low overpotential associated with the oxygen reduction reaction and almost four-electron electroreduction of dioxygen to water).

The influence of K7Fe3+P2W17O62H2 on l-alpha-phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol bilayer lipid membrane on Pt electrode was studied by voltammetry and AC impedance spectroscopy. The interaction of the polyoxometalates with the BLM can promote the access of Ru(NH3)(6)(3+) and [Fe(CN)(6)](3-/4-) to the electrode surface. It was found that some kind of pores had been formed on the BLM by AFM. The phenomenon is attributed to the interaction of K7Fe3+P2W17O62H2 with phosphatidylcholine phosphate groups located in its outer leaflet. Experimental results are helpful to understand the biological activity of the polyoxometalates in vivo.

The electrochemical behaviour of TCNQ modified S-BLM has been investigated through capacitor measurement and cyclic voltammetry (CV) which shows the surface wave behaviour of the TCNQ redox form. The voltammetry CV has shown different pairs peak at different scan rates and a possible explanation is provided.
