A method of determining the micro-cantilever residual stress gradients by studying its deflection and curvature is presented. The stress gradients contribute to both axial load and bending moment, which, in prebuckling regime, cause the structural stiffness change and curving up/down, respectively. As the axial load corresponds to the even polynomial terms of stress gradients and bending moment corresponds to the odd polynomial terms, the deflection itself is not enough to determine the axial load and bending moment. Curvature together with the deflection can uniquely determine these two parameters. Both linear analysis and nonlinear analysis of micro-cantilever deflection under axial load and bending moment are presented. Because of the stiffening effect due to the nonlinearity of (large) deformation, the difference between linear and nonlinear analyses enlarges as the micro-cantilever deflection increases. The model developed in this paper determines the resultant axial load and bending moment due to the stress gradients. Under proper assumptions, the stress gradients profile is obtained through the resultant axial load and bending moment.

In this paper, a series of experiments have been conducted in a U-shaped oscillatory flow tunnel, which provides a more realistic simulation than the previous actuator loading methods. Based on the experimental data of pipe displacement with two different constraint conditions (freely laid pipelines and anti-rolling pipelines), three characteristic times in the process of pipeline losing stability are identified. The effects of sand size on the pipeline lateral stability are examined for freely laid pipelines. The empirical relationships between non-dimensional pipeline weight (G) and Fronde number (Fr-b) are established for different constraint conditions, which will provide a guide for engineering practice. We try to connect the theory of infinite dimensional dynamical systems and nonlinear dynamical methods. The sine-Gordon equation is used to illustrate our method of discussing the dynamical behaviour of infinite dimensional systems. The results agree with those of Bishop and Flesch [SLAM J. Math. Anal. 21 (1990) 1511].

Based on the Mach-Zehnder effect between the core mode and the cladding modes, the interference fringes are formed by a pair of cascaded long-period fiber gratings (CLPFGs). Theoretical analyses show that the spectral spacing and the wavelength of these fringes are functions of the waveguide dispersion factor gamma, which is a characterizing parameter to LPFG and with theoretical and applicational significance. By measuring the characteristics of the transmission spectra of CLPFGs, the absolute value of gamma can be obtained. At the same time, the thermo-optic coefficient of effective refractive index difference between core and cladding modes, p, can also be obtained by measured the temperature sensitivity of these fringes. In the experiments, \gamma\ and mu were measured by this method to be 0.874 and 4.08 x 10(-5) degreesC(-1), respectively, for LPFGs with period of 450 mum and with a HE14 resonant peak at 1554 nm. We have studied magnetic and transport properties of insulating and metallic (Ga,Mn)As layers before and after annealing. A dramatic increase of the ferromagnetic transition temperature T-C by postgrowth annealing has been realized in both insulating and metallic (Ga,Mn)As. The as-grown insulating (Ga,Mn)As can be turned into metallic by the low-temperature annealing. For all the metallic (Ga,Mn)As, a characteristic feature in the temperature dependence of sheet resistance appears around T-C. This phenomenon may provide a simple and more convenient method to determine the T-C of metallic (Ga,Mn)As compared with superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurement. Moreover, the T-C of the metallic (Ga,Mn)As obtained by this way is in good agreement with that measured by a SQUID magnetometer. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

In the paper, we present a new method of restraining the Fabry-Perot resonance. The method is to combine dip angle with taper angle in the structure of the device and avoids the process of antireflection coatings. The experimental results show that restraining effect is apparent. A high threshold current has been obtained for the sample with both dip angle and taper angle structure. It provides a new method to make traveling-wave optical amplifiers.

An arch-shaped beam with different configurations under electrostatic loading experiences either the direct pull-in instability or the snap-through first and then the pull-in instability. When the pull-in instability occurs, the system collides with the electrode and adheres to it, which usually causes the system failure. When the snap-through instability occurs, the system experiences a discontinuous displacement to flip over without colliding with the electrode. The snap-through instability is an ideal actuation mechanism because of the following reasons: (1) after snap-through the system regains the stability and capability of withstanding further loading; (2) the system flips back when the loading is reduced, i.e. the system can be used repetitively; and (3) when approaching snap-through instability the system effective stiffness reduces toward zero, which leads to a fast flipping-over response. To differentiate these two types of instability responses for an arch-shaped beam is vital for the actuator design. For an arch-shaped beam under electrostatic loading, the nonlinear terms of the mid-plane stretching and the electrostatic loading make the analytical solution extremely difficult if not impossible and the related numerical solution is rather complex. Using the one mode expansion approximation and the truncation of the higher-order terms of the Taylor series, we present an analytical solution here. However, the one mode approximation and the truncation error of the Taylor series can cause serious error in the solution. Therefore, an error-compensating mechanism is also proposed. The analytical results are compared with both the experimental data and the numerical multi-mode analysis. The analytical method presented here offers a simple yet efficient solution approach by retaining good accuracy to analyze the instability of an arch-shaped beam under electrostatic loading.

A novel method is employed for the simultaneous determination of both the calibration constant of an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and the active surface area of a polycrystalline gold electrode. A gold electrode: is immersed into a 1 mM KI/1 M H2SO4 solution and on which forms a neutral monolayer. The adsorbed iodine can then be completely oxidized into IO3-. The active surface area of a gold electrode can be obtained from the net electrolytic charge of the oxidation process, and the calibration constant in the EQCM can be calculated from the corresponding frequency shift. The result shows that this method is simple, convenient and valid. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

The correlations of the calcination temperature, structure and catalytic activity for the oxidative coupling of methane on the LiLa0.5Ti0.5O2+lambda catalysts whose main phase and major active phase is Perovskite-type ternary complex oxide LaTi1-yLiyO3-lambda have been studied. The surface and bulk structures of the catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, XPS, IR, BET and so on, The results cleary indicated that the effect of calcination temperature on the activity for the oxidative coupling of methane is twofold. On one hand, it is favorable for Li+ substitution for Ti3+ to enter into the lattice of LaTiO3 and produce more oxygen vacancies in which active oxygens are formed; however, excessively high calcination temperature make the amount of Li+ substitution for Ti3+ lower, due to a little change of structure or phases for the catalyst. On the other hand, the conversion of CH4 drops because of the decrease of surface area, when the calcination temperature is raised.
