The data of velocity and magnetic fields in the solar photosphere (5324 angstrom) and the chromosphere (4861 angstrom) clearly show the features of tangential discontinuity of velocity in the chromosphere. The velocity fields in and near the solar active region named No. 88029 by the Huairou Station have been analyzed in detail. A lot of magnetohydrodynamic discontinuous surfaces, especially the tangential discontinuities, are shown from the observations. The calculations of the thickness of discontinuous layer and the evolution time of instability agree with the observational results. The variations of the flow field will directly influence the evolutions and changes of the active region as the magnetic field are coupled closely with the plasma motion.

A modified microfiltration membrane has been prepared by blending a matrix polymer with a functional polymer. Cellulose acetate (CA) was blended with polyethyleneimine (PEI), which was then crosslinked by polyisocyanate, in a mixture of solvents. In the membrane, PEI can supply coupling sites for ligands in affinity separation or be used as ligands for metal chelating, removal of endotoxin or ion exchange. The effects of the time of phase inversion induced by water vapor, blended amount of PEI and amount of crosslinking agent on membrane performance were investigated. The prepared blend membranes have specific surface area of 12.04-24.11 m(2)/g and pure water flux (PWF) of 10-50 ml/cm(2) min with porosity of 63-75%. The membranes, made of 0.15 50 wt.% PEI/CA ratio and 0.5 crosslinking agent/PEI ratio, were applied to adsorbing Cu2+ and bovine serum albumin (BSA) individually. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cu2+ ion on the blend membrane is 7.42 mg/g dry membrane. The maximum adsorption capacities of BSA on the membranes with and without chelating Cu2+ ion are 86.6 and 43.8 mg/g dry membrane, respectively. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Interfacial waves and wave-induced tangential stress are studied for geostrophic small amplitude waves of two-layer fluid with a top free surface and a flat bottom. The solutions were deduced from the general form of linear fluid dynamic equations of two-layer fluid under the f-plane approximation, and wave-induced tangential stress were estimated based on the solutions obtained. As expected; the solutions derived from the present work include as special cases those obtained by Sun et al. (2004. Science in China, Set. D, 47(12): 1147-1154) for geostrophic small amplitude surface wave solutions and wave-induced tangential stress if tire density of the upper layer is much smaller than that of the lower layer. The results show that the interface and the surface will oscillate synchronously, and the influence of the earth's rotation both on the surface wave solutions and the interfacial wave solutions should be considered.

Tangential flow affinity membrane cartridge (TFAMC) fs a new model of immunoadsorption therapy for hemoperfusion. Recombinant Protein A was immobilized on the membrane cartridge through Schiff base formation for extracorporeal IgG and immune complex removal from blood. Flow characteristics, immunoadsorption capacity and biocompatibility of protein A TFAMC were studied. The results showed that the pressure drop increased with the increasing flow rate of water, plasma and blood, demonstrating reliable strength of membrane at high now rare. The adsorption capacities of protein A TFAMC for IgG from human plasma and blood were measured. The cartridge with 139 mg protein A immobilized on the matrix (6 mg protein A/g dry matrix) adsorbed 553 mg IgG (23.8 mg IgG/g dry matrix) from human plasma and 499.4 mg IgG (21.5 mg IgG/g dry matrix) from human blood, respectively. The circulation time had a major influence on IgG adsorption capacity, but the flow rate had little influence. Experiments in vitro and in vivo confirmed that protein A TFAMC mainly adsorbed Ige and Little of other plasma proteins, and that blood cell damage was negligible. The extracorporeal circulation system is safe and reliable. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

We have recently developed a generalized JKR model for non-slipping adhesive contact between an elastic cylinder and a stretched substrate where both tangential and normal tractions are transmitted across the contact interface. Here we extend this model to a generalized Maugis-Dugdale model by adopting a Dugdale-type adhesive interaction law to eliminate the stress singularity near the edge of the contact zone. The non-slipping Maugis-Dugdale model is expected to have a broader range of validity in comparison with the non-slipping JKR model. The solution shares a number of common features with experimentally observed behaviors of cell reorientation on a cyclically stretched substrate.

A generalized plane strain JKR model is established for non-slipping adhesive contact between an elastic transversely isotropic cylinder and a dissimilar elastic transversely isotropic half plane, in which a pulling force acts on the cylinder with the pulling direction at an angle inclined to the contact interface. Full-coupled solutions are obtained through the Griffith energy balance between elastic and surface energies. The analysis shows that, for a special case, i.e., the direction of pulling normal to the contact interface, the full-coupled solution can be approximated by a non-oscillatory one, in which the critical pull-off force, pull-off contact half-width and adhesion strength can be expressed explicitly. For the other cases, i.e., the direction of pulling inclined to the contact interface, tangential tractions have significant effects on the pull-off process, it should be described by an exact full-coupled solution. The elastic anisotropy leads to an orientation-dependent pull-off force and adhesion strength. This study could not only supply an exact solution to the generalized JKR model of transversely isotropic materials, but also suggest a reversible adhesion sensor designed by transversely isotropic materials, such as PZT or fiber-reinforced materials with parallel fibers. In this paper, we investigate the adhesive contact between a rigid cylinder of radius R and a graded elastic half-space with a Young's modulus varying with depth according to a power-law, E = E-0(y/c(0))(k) (0 < k < 1), while the Poisson's ratio v remains constant. The results show that, for a given value of ratio R/C-0, a critical value of k exists at which the pull-off force attains a maximum; for a fixed value of k, the larger the ratio R/c(0), the larger the pull-off force is. For Gibson materials (i.e., k = 1 and v = 0.5), closed-form analytical solutions can be obtained for the critical contact half-width at pull-off and pull-off force. We further discuss the perfect stick case with both externally normal and tangential loads.

In general, the propagating behavior of extraordinary wave in anisotropic materials is different from that in isotropic materials. With the tangential continuity of Maxwell's equations, the electromagnetic propagating behaviors have been investigated at the incident and exit interfaces of the uniaxial anisotropic thin film. The emphasis was placed on two interesting optical phenomena such as homolateral refraction behavior and wide-angle Brewster's phenomenon, which occurred at the interfaces of uniaxial anisotropic thin film.

In this paper, we propose a lattice dynamic treatment for the total potential energy of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) which is, apart from a parameter for the nonlinear effects, extracted from the vibrational energy of the planar graphene sheet. The energetics, elasticity and lattice dynamics are treated in terms of the same set of force constants, independently of the tube structures. Based upon this proposal, we have investigated systematically the relaxed lattice configuration for narrow SWCNTs, the strain energy, the Young's modulus and Poisson ratio, and the lattice vibrational properties with respect to the relaxed equilibrium tubule structure. Our calculated results for various physical quantities are nicely in consistency with existing experimental measurements. In particular, we verified that the relaxation effect makes the bond length longer and the frequencies of various optical vibrational modes softer. Our calculation provides evidence that the Young's modulus of an armchair tube exceeds that of the planar graphene sheet, and that the large diameter limits of the Young's modulus and Poisson ratio are in agreement with the experimental values of graphite; the calculated radial breathing modes for ultra-narrow tubes with diameters ranging between 2 and 5 angstrom coincide with the experimental results and the existing ab initio calculations with satisfaction. For narrow tubes with a diameter of 20 angstrom, the calculated frequencies of optical modes in the tubule's tangential plane, as well as those of radial breathing modes, are also in good agreement with the experimental measurements. In addition, our calculation shows that various physical quantities of relaxed SWCNTs can actually be expanded in terms of the chiral angle defined for the corresponding ideal SWCNTs.

A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) pressure sensor based on the double shell cylinder with temperature compensation is presented. in the sensing scheme, a sensing FBG is affixed in the tangential direction on the outer surface of the inner cylinder, and another FBG is affixed in the axial direction to compensate the temperature fluctuation. Based on the theory of elasticity, the theoretical analysis of the strain distribution of the sensing shell is presented. Experiments are carried out to test the performance of the sensor. A pressure sensitivity of 0.0937 nm/MPa has been achieved. The experimental results also demonstrate that the two FBGs have the same temperature sensitivity, which can be utilized to compensate the temperature induced wavelength shift during the pressure measurement. In this paper, we present a theoretical approach to optimize the design of a fiber optic hydrophone based on a flat diaphragm and multilayer fiber coils. In this theoretical analysis, both the radial and tangential strain induced fiber length changes are taken into account. The result shows that the position of the fiber coils and the number of the fiber layers have significant effects on the sensitivity, of the hydrophone. By optimizing these parameters, a higher sensitivity can be achieved. Sample hydrophones are fabricated and tested. The experimental result is in good agreement with the theoretical result, which shows this theoretical approach is effective in optimizing the design of the fiber optic hydrophone. Nano-fibrillar adhesives can adhere strongly to surfaces as a gecko does. The size of each fiber has significant effects on the adhesion enhancement, especially on rough surfaces. In the present study, we report the size effects on the normal and shear strength of adhesion for a single viscoelastic fiber. It is found that there exists a limited region of the critical sizes under which the interfacial normal or tangential tractions uniformly attain the theoretical adhesion strength. The region for a viscoelastic fiber under tension with similar material constants to a gecko's spatula is 135-255 nm and that under torque is 26.5-52 nm. This finding is significant for the development of artificial biomimetic attachment systems.

An alignment study of a liquid crystalline copolyether TPP-7/11(5/5) thin films has been carried out in a 10 kV . cm(-1) electrostatic field parallel to the thin film surface normal. This copolyether possesses a negative dielectric anisotropy. The chain molecules are homogeneously aligned in the electric field and they form two-dimensionally ordered lamellae in a tilted columnar phase when the samples were cooled to room temperature. It is observed that the chain molecules are splayed to form bent lamellae and the chain direction is perpendicular to the tangential direction of the lamellar surfaces. These lamellae thus become replicas of the chain orientation, Due to the flexoelectric effect and density fluctuation on the thin film free surface, disclinations having topological strength s = 1, c = pi /4 and defect walls form. These s = 1 disclinations possesses both left- and right-handednesses. Discussion of the defect formations have been attempted.

Latitudinal or altitudinal variation in several anatomical characters of wood is common for woody dicotyledonous genera with a wide distribution, but whether such variation exists at the species level is disputed. Latitudinal and altitudinal trends in wood anatomy of Dodonaea viscosa were studied, using 102 samples collected between 41.2degrees S and 33.3degrees N latitude and 7-2750 in altitude. We studied variation in four quantitative features: vessel element length, fiber length, vessel frequency, and tangential vessel diameter. Ontogenetic trends were minimal with a slight decrease or increase in the innermost stem and were negligible among the studied specimens. Throughout the distributional range of the species, no latitudinal trends were detected in either the Northern or Southern Hemispheres, Altitudinal trends were also nonexistent, except for two features in specimens from China and Japan. Absence of latitudinal or altitudinal trends in this widely distributed species suggests that in some species the species-level variation in wood anatomy is not controlled by ecological gradients.
