A constitutive model, based on an (n + 1)-phase mixture of the Mori-Tanaka average theory, has been developed for stress-induced martensitic transformation and reorientation in single crystalline shape memory alloys. Volume fractions of different martensite lattice correspondence variants are chosen as internal variables to describe microstructural evolution. Macroscopic Gibbs free energy for the phase transformation is derived with thermodynamics principles and the ensemble average method of micro-mechanics. The critical condition and the evolution equation are proposed for both the phase transition and reorientation. This model can also simulate interior hysteresis loops during loading/unloading by switching the critical driving forces when an opposite transition takes place.

Single crystalline ternary ZnxCd1-xS nanocombs, which have 'comb' shaped' teeth on one side, have been synthesized by a one-step metallo-organic chemical vapor deposition process at a low temperature of 420 degrees C. The asymmetric, growth behavior of the nanocombs is likely to be induced by the polarization of the c-ptane. Because of the uniform structure and perfect geometrical shape, the nanoteeth could be potentially useful as nanocantilever arrays for nanosensors and, nanotweezers. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Single-crystalline alpha-Si3N4 nanowires are controlled to grow perpendicular to the wet-etched trenches in the SiO0.94 film on the plane of the Si substrate without metal catalysis. A detailed characterization is carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photoluminescence at 600 nm from alpha-Si3N4 nanowires is attributed to the recombination at the defect state formed by the Si dangling bond N3 equivalent to Si-center dot. The growth mechanism is considered to be related to the catalysis and nitridation of SiO nanoclusters preferably re-deposited around the inner corner of the trenches, as well as faster Si diffusion along the slanting side walls of the trenches. This simple direction-controlled growth method is compatible with the CMOS process, and could facilitate the fabrication of alpha-Si3N4 nanoelectronic or nanophotonic devices on the Si platform.

Single-crystalline Si (100) samples were implanted with 30 keV He2+ ions to doses ranging from 2.0x10(16) to 2.0x10(17) ions/cm(2) and subsequently thermally annealed at 800 degrees C for 30min. The morphological change of the samples with the increase of implantation dose was investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that oblate-shaped blisters with an average height around 4.0nm were found on the 2.0 x 10(16) ions /cm(2) implanted sample surface; spherical-shaped blisters with an average height wound 10.0nm were found on the 5.0 x 10(16) ions/cm(2) implanted sample surface; strip-shaped and conical cracks were observed on the sample He-implanted to a dose of 1.0 X 10(17) ions /cm(2). Exfoliations occurred on the sample surface to a dose of 2.0 x10(17) ions /cm(2). Mechanisms underlying the surface change were discussed.

We report the electrochemical growth of gold nanowires with controlled dimensions and crystallinity. By systematically varying the deposition conditions, both polycrystalline and single-crystalline wires with diameters between 20 and 100 nm are successfully synthesized in etched ion-track membranes. The nanowires are characterized using scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy and x-ray diffraction. The influence of the deposition parameters, especially those of the electrolyte, on the nanowire structure is investigated. Gold sulfite electrolytes lead to polycrystalline structure at the temperatures and voltages employed. In contrast, gold cyanide solution favours the growth of single crystals at temperatures between 50 and 65 degrees C under both direct current and reverse pulse current deposition conditions. The single-crystalline wires possess a [110] preferred orientation.

Single crystalline Bi2S3 With various morphologies (wires, rods, and flowers) has been successfully prepared via a simple polyol solution process and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The morphologies of Bi2S3 crystals are highly dependent on the experimental parameters, including the reaction temperature, reactant ratio, sulfur source, and additive. The adjustment of these parameters can lead to an obvious shape evolution of products, and the growth mechanism has been proposed.

This paper reports a versatile seed-mediated growth method for selectively synthesizing single-crystalline rhombic dodecahedral, octahedral, and cubic gold nanocrystals. In the seed-mediated growth method, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and CPC-capped single-crystalline gold nanocrystals 41.3 nm in size are used as the surfactant and seeds, respectively. The CPC-capped gold seeds can avoid twinning during the growth process, which enables us to study the correlations between the growth conditions and the shapes of the gold nanocrystals. Surface-energy and kinetic considerations are taken into account to understand the formation mechanisms of the single-crystalline gold nanocrystals with varying shapes.

Large-scale arrays consist of dendritic single-crystalline Ag/Pd alloy nanostructures are synthesized for the first time. A simple galvanic replacement reaction is introduced to grow these arrays directly on Ag substrates. The morphology of the products strongly depended on the reaction temperature and the concentration of H2PdCl4 solution. The mechanism of the formation of alloy and the dendritic morphology has been discussed. These alloy arrays exhibit high surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity and may have potential applications in investigation of "in situ" Pd catalytic reactions using SERS. Moreover, electrocatalytic measurements suggest that the obtained dendritic Ag/Pd alloy nanostructures exhibit electrocatytic activity toward the oxidation of formic acid.

Synthesis of submicrometre scale single-crystalline gold plates of nanometre thickness in the presence of nucleobase guanine through chemical reduction of HAuCl4 was investigated. The elemental composition of the as-prepared gold nanoplates was estimated using energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The as-prepared gold plates were composed of essentially (111) lattice planes, as revealed by both x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. It was found that the molar ratio of HAuCl4 to guanine played a very important role in the formation of gold nanoplates. Gold nanoplates could be produced at a molar ratio of [HAuCl4]/[guanine] = 50: 1 while only smaller gold spherical nanoparticles were obtained at molar ratios of [HAuCl4]/[guanine] <= 20:1. A possible growth mechanism of the as-prepared gold nanoplates is proposed and discussed. The results and conclusion presented in this work may be valuable for our further understanding of the roles of precursor ligands in the control of nanoparticles aggregation states and the preparation of shape-controlled nanoparticles.

Nanowires of SiC were synthesized by carbothermally reducing PVP/TEOS composite fibres obtained by electrospinning. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) indicated that the SiC nanowires are single crystalline in nature. Both Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy and HRTEM indicated that a thin layer of SiO2 was formed on the outer surface of the nanowire as a result of post-heat treatment for the removal of residual carbon. Such SiO2 layer protects the inner SiC fibre from further oxidation. The formation mechanism of single-crystalline SiC nanowires was proposed based on our understanding and characterizations. The growth of the nanowire is believed to be along the ( 111) of its cubic cell.

BaF2 nanocrystals doped with 5.0 mol% Eu3+ has been successfully synthesized via a facile, quick and efficient ultrasonic solution route employing the reactions between Ba(NO3)(2), Eu(NO3)(3) and KBF4 under ambient conditions. The product was characterized via X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron micrographs (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron micrographs (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The ultrasonic irradiation has a strong effect on the morphology of the BaF2:Eu3+ particles. The caddice-sphere-like particles with an average diameter of 250 nm could be obtained with ultrasonic irradiation, whereas only olive-like particles were produced without ultrasonic irradiation. The results of XRD indicate that the obtained BaF2:Eu3+ nanospheres crystallized well with a cubic structure. The PL spectrum shows that the BaF2:Eu3+ nanospheres has the characteristic emission of Eu3+ D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J = 1-4) transitions, with the magnetic dipole D-5(0)-F-7(1) allowed transition (590 nm) being the most prominent emission line.

A single-crystalline EuF3 nanoflower with a novel three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure has been successfully synthesized via a facile, fast, efficient, and mild ultrasonic irradiation solution route employing the reaction of Eu(NO3)(3) and KBF4 under ambient conditions without any template or surfactant. The ultrasonic irradiation plays an important role and is necessary for the synthesis of EuF3 with the complex structure. The formation mechanism of this complex nanostructure is proposed in this paper. No template or surfactant is used in this method, which avoids the subsequent complicated workup for the removal of the template or surfactant. Furthermore, a substantial reduction in the reaction time as well as the reaction temperature is observed compared with the hydrothermal process.
