A faccile and efficient one-pot synthesis of highly substituted thiophenes has been developed and employed for the preparation of a small focused library. Treatment of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds 1 with CS2 in the presence of K2CO3 in DMF at room temperature, followed by stepwise addition of alkyl bromides 2 and methylene active bromides 3, provided via intramolecular cyclization 2,3,4,5-tetrasubstituted thiophenes 4 in yields of 77-94%. This protocol, combining construction and modification of the thiophene ring, increases the structural diversity of final products from readily available materials. A mechanism for the one-pot synthesis of thiophenes of type 4 has been proposed. A small focused library of thiophenes is prepared using the sequential addition of reagents to achieve unique substitution in the 2 and 5 position of the thiophene ring

Black Pearls 2000 (designated as BP- 2000) and Vulcan XC-72 (designated as XC-72) carbon blacks were chosen as supports to prepare 40 wt % (the targeted value) Pt/C catalysts by a modified polyol process. The carbon blacks were characterized by N-2 adsorption and Fourier tranform infrared spectroscopy. The prepared catalysts were characterized by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in situ cyclic voltammetry, and current-voltage curves. On BP- 2000, Pt nanoparticles were larger in size and more unevenly distributed than on XC-72. It was observed by SEM that the corresponding catalyst layer on BP- 2000 was thicker than that of XC-72 based catalyst at almost the identical catalyst loading. And the BP- 2000 supported catalyst gave a better single cell performance at high current densities. These results suggest that the performance improvement is due to the enhanced oxygen diffusion and water removal capability when BP- 2000 is used as cathode catalyst support. The formation of surface alkoxy species on nanosized HZSM-5 and microsized HZSM-5, after exposure to methanol and subsequent conversion to olefins, has been investigated by in situ solid state NMR. Compared to microsized HZSM-5 zeolite, the nanosized HZSM-5 zeolite was found to exhibit a higher affinity for trapping methanol species. Activation of the adsorbed methanol species resulted in the formation of various surface alkoxy species with different rigid characters, including the carboxylate-like surface species, as evidenced by deconvolution of the related spectra. The present results support the existence of the so-called carbon-pool in the conversion of methanol, which serves as the reaction precursor not only for the coupling of the species to form olefins, but also for uncontrolled polymerization to give coke on the surface. The nanosized HZSM-5 shows a distinct resistance to the formation of carbonaceous deposits on the surface.
