An optical diagnostic system designed for the microgravity experiments on Marangoni drop migrations has been depicted in the presented paper. One part of the optical system was used to image and record the drops tracks; the other part was an equal-thick interferential system, it has the ability to observe the fine structures of the drop migrations. Some ground-based experiments had been performed and the results were simply discussed in the present paper.

The space experimental device for testing the Marangoni drop migrations has been discussed in the present paper. The experiment is one of the spaceship projects of China. In comparison with similar devices, it has the ability of completing all the scientific experiments by both auto controlling and telescience methods. It not only can perform drop migration experiments of large Reynolds numbers but also has an equi-thick interferential system.

By using 19 Y chromosome biallelic markers and 3 Y chromosome microsatellite markers, we analyzed the genetic structure of 31 indigenous Sino-Tibetan speaking populations (607 individuals) currently residing in East, Southeast, and South Asia. Our results showed that a T to C mutation at locus M122 is highly prevalent in almost all of the Sino-Tibetan populations, implying a strong genetic affinity among populations in the same language family. Furthermore, the extremely high frequency of H8, a haplotype derived from M122C, in the Sino-Tibetan speaking populations in the Himalayas including Tibet and northeast India indicated a strong bottleneck effect that occurred during a westward and then southward migration of the founding population of Tibeto-Burmans. We, therefore, postulate that the ancient people, who lived in the upper-middle Yellow River basin about 10,000 years ago and developed one of the earliest Neolithic cultures in East Asia, were the ancestors of modem Sino-Tibetan populations.

The transport phenomenon of drops or bubbles is a very important topic in fundamental hydrodynamics research and practical applications such as material processing and the chemical engineering. In microgravity environment, if drops or bubbles stay in a continuous phase with non-uniform temperature ¯eld, they will start to move as a result of the variance of the interface tension. This kind of movement is called the Marangoni migration. This review tries to sum up the main results in this ¯eld on theoretical analysis, numerical simulations and experiments. So far the theoretical analysis is still limited to the linear or weak nonlinear steady questions, while the current numerical simulations can already obtain the time- dependent process of the bubble/drop migration when the e®ect of heat convection is small. For strong heat convection problem, or when the Marangoni number is bigger than 100, no numerical result is in consistence with those of experiments so far. Some of the lastest numerical results are shown when heat convection is strong, and the main di®erence between strong and weak heat convection is analyzed. Finally, we also discuss the main unresolved problems in this ¯eld and some possible directions in the future.

Influences of seven organic modifiers, including urea, methanol (MeOH), dioxane (DIO), tetrahydrofuran (THF), acetonitrile (ACN), 1-propanol (1-PrOH) and 2-propanol (2-PrOH), on the solute retention and the electrokinetic migrations in micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC) are investigated with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelle as pseudostationary phase. It is observed that in the limited concentration ranges used in the MEKC systems the effect of organic modifier concentration on the retention can be described by the equation logk'=logk'(w)-SC for most binary aqueous-organic buffer, but deviations from this retention equation are observed at ACN and particularly THF as organic modifiers. With parameter S as a measure of the elutropic strength, the elutropic strength of the organic modifiers is found to follow a general order urea
