It has been generally agreed that pyridine can be effectively mineralized in aerated TiO2 slurries using near-UV irradiation. The knowledge on the kinetics of the system possesses both practical and theoretical values. The present study, on the base of Langmuir-Hinshewood mechanism, illustrates a pseudo first-order kinetic model of the degradation with the limiting rate constant of 3.004 mg l(-1) min(-1) and equilibrium adsorption constant 2.763 x 10(-2) l mg(-1), respectively. The degradation efficiency in alkali is a little higher than that in acid with a minimum at about pH = 5, which is explained by the formation of acid-pyridine in acidic surrounding together with the amphoteric nature of the TiO2 surface. The promotion of H2O2 on the photo-degradation ties in its supplying proper amount of (OH)-O-. radicals for the inducement stage before surface redox reactions. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. A new series of fine-tunable phosphite-pyridine (P,N) ligands derived from (S)-2-amino-T-hydroxy-6,6'-dimethyl-1,1'-biphenyl and (S)-2-amino-2'-hydroxy-4,4',6,6'-tetramethyl-1,1'-biphenyl was employed in Cu(I)-catalyzed conjugate addition of diethylzinc to acyclic enones. Excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98% ee) and highly catalytic activities were achieved for a variety of acyclic enones.

Multiphoton ionization of binary mixed clusters (C5H5N)(x)-(H2O)(y) at 532, 355 and 266 nm laser wavelengths has been investigated using TOF mass spectrometer. The experiments showed that almost all the products were protonated ions, At 532 and 355 nm, the products were mainly protonated pyridine clusters (C5H5N)(n)-H+, while at 266 nm, mixed binary cluster ions (C5H5N)(m)- (H2O)(n)-H+ appeared. It was found that the abundance of the [(C5H5N)(3)-H2O-H](+) ions was abnormally high. The calculation indicated that the ion [(C5H5N)(3)-H2O-H](+) is Of a kind of magic number structures with C-3v symmetry. A stepwise reaction mechanism is suggested that photoionization is followed by dissociation. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A facile and efficient one-pot synthesis of substituted pyridine-2,4(1H,3H)-diones has been developed. Subjected to N,N-dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal (DMFDMA) in N,N-dimethylformamide at 120 ˚C, a series of acyl(carbamoyl)ketene S,S-acetals were converted into the corresponding substituted pyridine-2,4(1H,3H)-diones in high yields.

Self-assembly of binary blends of two triblock copolymers of poly(4-vinyl pyridine)-b-polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinyl pyridine), i.e., P4VP(43)-b-PS260-b-P4VP(43) (P1) and P4VP(43)-b-PS366-b-P4VP(43) (P2), in dioxane/water solution was studied. These two triblock copolymers individually tend to form vesicles (P2) and cylindrical micelles (P1) in dilute solution. It was found that copolymer components in the blend, sample preparation method, and annealing time had significant effect on hybridization aggregate morphology. By increasing P1 content in the copolymer blends, fraction of looped and stretched cylinders increased, while fraction of bilayers decreased. Nearly no bilayer was observed when P1 content was above 85 wt%.

Chiral ligand 2-(2'-piperidinyl)pyridine 1 has been synthesized in good overall yield by sequential benzylation, hydrogenation and debenzylation of 2,2'-bipyridine. Its enantiomerically pure enantiomers have been obtained by resolution of 2-(1-benzyl-2-piperidinyl)pyridine 2 with D-tartaric acid (or L-tartaric acid) followed by debenzylation. The absolute configuration was determined by X-ray analysis of the (S)-2 D-tartrate. It was demonstrated that I can be used as an effective enantioselective catalyst in the addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes.
