The ion exchange mechanism accompanying the oxidation/reduction processes of cupric hexacyanoferrate-modified platinum electrodes in different aqueous electrolyte solutions has been studied by means of in situ probe beam deflection and the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance technique. The results demonstrate that the charge neutrality of the film during the reoxidation/reduction process is accomplished predominantly by the movement of cations, but anions and/or solvent are also participator(s). Moreover, in KHC8H4O4 (potassium biphthalate) solution, the EQCM data obtained from chronoamperometry experiment are more complicated than those in KCl and K2SO4 solutions. The difference in the electrochemical behavior of hydroquinone and pyrocatechol. at platinum and gold surfaces was analyzed using voltammetry and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show that the hydroquinone derivatives are adsorbed on a gold surface with vertical orientation, which makes the electron transfer between the bulk species and the electrode surface easier than that in the case of flat adsorption of hydroquinone derivatives that occurs at a platinum electrode. The formation of the vertical conformation and the rapid process of electron transfer were also confirmed by quantum chemistry calculations. In addition, the pre-adsorbed iodine on the electrodes played a key role on the adsorbed configuration and. electron transfer of redox species.

ECL of several amines containing different numbers of hydroxyl and amino groups was investigated. N-butyldiethanolamine is found to be more effective than 2-(dibutylamino)ethanol at gold and platinum electrodes, and is the most effective coreactant reported until now. Surprisingly, ECL intensities of monoamines, such as 2-(dibutylamino)ethanol and N-butyldiethanolamine, are much stronger than that of diamines including N,N,N',N'-tetrakis-(2-hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediamine and N,N,N',N'-tetrakis-(2-hydroxypropyl)ethlenediamine. The striking contrast between ECL signals of the investigated monoamines and diamines may result from more significant side reactions of diamines, such as the intramolecular side reactions between oxidative amine cation radicals and reductive amine free radicals.

The oxidation of formic acid at the Pd/C catalyst electrode is a completely irreversible kinetic process with the reaction order of 1.0. The oxidation rate of formic acid is increased with increasing the concentration of formic acid and is decreased with increasing H+ concentration. The apparent negative reaction order with respect to H+ is about -0.18 or -0.04 in H2SO4 or HClO4 solution respectively, because bisulfate anions would inhibit formic acid oxidation at some extent. The kinetic parameters, charge transfer coefficient and the diffusion coefficient of formic acid were obtained under the quasi steady-state conditions.

PdSn/C catalysts with different atomic ratios of Pd to Sn were synthesised by a NaBH4 reduction method. Electrochemical tests show that the alloy catalysts exhibit significantly higher catalytic activity and stability for formic acid electrooxidation (FAEO) than the Pd/C catalyst prepared with the same method. XRD and TEM indicate that a particle-size effect is not the main cause for the high performance. XPS confirms that Pd is modified by Sn through an electronic effect which can decrease the adsorption strength of poisonous intermediates on Pd and thus promote the FAEO greatly.

It is reported for the first time that the slow electrochemical kinetics process for the electro-oxidation of ethanol can be promoted by changing the electrochemical environment. The electro-oxidation of ethanol at a Pt electrode in the presence of Eu3+ cations was studied and an enhancement effect was exhibited. Cyclic voltammetry experiment results showed that the peak current density for the electro-oxidation of ethanol was increased in the presence of EU3+ in the ethanol solution. A preliminary discussion of the mechanism of the enhancement effect is given. This is based on a CO stripping experiment, which shows that either the onset potential or the peak potential of CO oxidation is shifted negatively after adding Eu3+ to the solution.

Polyaniline-camphorsulfonic acid (PAN-CSA) composite film on platinum electrode surface has been synthesized via the electrochemical polymerization of aniline in the presence of camphorsulfonic acid (CSA). It was found that the doping of polyaniline (PAN) with CSA extends the electroactivity of PAN in neutral and even in alkaline media. The PAN-CSA composite film coated platinum electrodes are shown to be good electrocatalytic surfaces for the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) of pH 7.0. The anodic peak potential of AA shifts from 0.63 V at the bare platinum electrode to 0.34 V at the PAN-CSA composite modified platinum electrode with a greatly enhanced current response. A linear calibration graph is obtained over the AA concentration range of 5-50 mM using cyclic voltammetry. The kinetics of the catalytic reaction are investigated using rotating disk electrode voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The results are explained using the theory of electrocatalytic reactions at chemically modified electrodes. The PAN-CSA composite on the electrode surface shows good reproducibility and stability.

In this paper, we found that boron deposited on the surface of support when sodium borohydride used as reducing agent during the preparation of Pt/C catalyst. The deposition of boron markedly reduces particle size of Pt, raises electrochemical active surface (EAS) area of catalyst and electrochemical activity for hydrogen evolution or oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) compared with which prepared using other reducing agents (hydrogen and formaldehyde).

Two stable redox couples, accompanying clear color switches between yellow green and blue, can be observed when the VHCF-coated film platinum electrodes are cyclic potential scanned in 3.6 M H2SO4 and 0.2 M K2SO4 electrolyte solution. Electrochemical results and in situ Fourier transfer infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy demonstrate that the redox reaction of the electroactive iron sites is related to the first redox couple (E-1/2 = 0.81 V) while the second redox couple (E-1/2 = 1.01 V) is due to the redox reactions of the electroactive vanadyl ions. Under the proper conditions, such as in high acidic solutions or thin films (deposition time is less than 2 min) and so on, the third redox couple (E-1/2 = 0.89-0.94 V) can be observed on the cyclic voltammograms, which originates from the redox reactions of the interstitial vanadyl ions. This electrochemical reaction mechanism is investigated by in situ probe beam deflection technique, exchange of K+ ions accompanies with redox reaction of the iron sites, but for redox reaction of the vanadyl ions, both H+ ions, K+ ions and water molecules are involved.

Based on scanning tunnelling microscopy and electrochemical measurements, orientation and electrocatalytic function of riboflavin adsorbed on carbon substrates have been described for the first time. Scanning tunnelling micrographs show clearly that tip induction may result in an orientation change of the adsorbed riboflavin molecule on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite from the initially vertical orientation to the stable flat form. The adsorbed riboflavin as an effective mediator can accelerate the reduction of dioxygen which accepts two electrons from the reduced riboflavin to generate hydrogen peroxide. The rate constants of the electrocatalytic reaction in various pH solutions were determined using a rotating disc electrode modified with riboflavin. The pH effect and possible catalytic mechanism are discussed in detail.

A new liquid chromatography electrochemical (LCEC) scheme for glucose sensing has been developed on the basis of a Prussian Blue chemically modified electrode (CME) of novel construction and characterized in terms of various experimental parameters by the flow injection analysis (FIA) technique. Unique hydrodynamic voltammograms were obtained for the first time at the CME in the flow-through amperometric detection of glucose, and subsequently both anodic and cathodic peaks could be expected on monitoring the operating potential in the modest positive or negative region. The unique pH dependence on the CME response towards glucose makes it perfectly compatible with conventional reversed phase liquid chromatography systems. On the basis of these features, practical application in glucose LCEC detection has been effectively performed; a linear response range over three orders of magnitude and a detection limit of subpicomole level were readily obtained. The capability of the established LCEC mode in the direct sensing of urinary glucose has been demonstrated.

A copper-based chemically-modified electrode has been constructed and characterized by various experimental parameters in flow-through amperometric detection of carboxylic acids and phenolic acids. Novel hydrodynamic voltamperograms were first obtained in flow-through amperometric detection with the Cu-based CME and subsequently negative and positive peaks were observed in a single chromatogram. This unique and flexible potential dependence could be of great benefit in chromatographic speciation and quantification. These observations suggest that the detector response was governed by the complexation reaction of copper ions with the solutes.

The adsorption of cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode surface has been studied by spectroelectrochemistry with a long optical path length thin-layer cell (LOPTLC) for the first time. A fine adsorption isotherm of CPB molecules from an aqueous solution containing 0.10 M KBr has been obtained over the range of (1.00-8.00) x 10(-5) M. From theoretical calculation and experimental data, adsorption of CPB on the GC electrode surface shows four distinct orientations and three large orientation transitions. Compared with the ordinary isotherm, the differential isotherm is more characteristic and would be suitable for the study of orientation transitions of organic compounds. With a theoretical treatment of the adsorption isotherm, four orientations of adsorbed CPB on a GC electrode surface coincide with the Frumkin-Langmuir type. From adsorption parameters the Frumkin-Langmuir equations, the adsorption free energy and, therefore, the equilibrium constants of orientation transitions of the CPB molecule can be obtained.

Composite membrane modified electrodes were prepared by electrochemical deposition of platinum particles in a poly(o-phenylenediamine) (PPD) him coated on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes. The modified electrodes showed high catalytic activity towards the reduction of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. A four-electron transfer process predominated the reduction process. The pH dependence and the stability of the electrodes were also studied.
