In this work, the absorption spectral characteristics and color-change reaction mechanism of cobalt(II) chloride(COCl2) in alcohol organic solvents has been investigated in the presence of water, and then the optimum conditions for determining the water content in the solvents were selected. Results indicated that the absorption spectra Of COCl2 in alcohols decreased with the increment of water content. At the maximum absorption wavelength of 656 nm, there were good linear relationships between the logarithm of the absorbance and the water content in organic solvents such as ethanol, n-propanol, iso-propanol and n-butanol with related coefficients in the range of 0.9996 similar to 0.9998. For determining water content in organic solvents, this method is simple, rapid, sensitive, reproducible and environmentally friendly. Furthermore, the linear range cannot restrict determination of the water content in organic solvents. This method had been applied to determine the water content in ethanol and n-butanol with satisfactory recovery of water in n-butanol between 98.41%-101.29%.

Matrix effects arising from ethanol, propanol, glycerol, acetic acid, ethylenediamine and triethanolamine in inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry have been studied. Addition of ethanol, propanol, glycerol, acetic acid, ethylenediamine and triethanolamine into solution has an enhancement effect on the signal intensity of analyte with ionization potential between 9 and 11 eV. The ethylenediamine and triethanolamine have higher enhancement effect on the signal intensity of Hg than that of ethanol, propanol, glycerol and acetic acid. Addition of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine into solution has a suppression effect on the signal intensity of Ph and Sr. The mechanism of the enhancement or suppression was investigated. The signal enhancement of Hg in the presence of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine is not caused by improved degree of ionization of Hg and nebulization efficiency. The suppression effects of Ph and Sr in the presence of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine are due to decrease of atomization efficiency of these elements. A method for the determination of Hg in the biological standard samples Ly ICP-MS was developed.

A novel amperometric biosensor for quantification of the electrochemically inert polar organic solvents based on tyrosinase electrode was preliminarily reported. The biosensor was fabricated by simply syringing an aqueous solution of tyrosinase/PVAVP (PVAVP: copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) grafting with 4-vinylpyridine) onto glassy carbon electrode surface followed by drying the modified electrode at +4 degrees C in a refrigerator. The current generated from electrochemical reduction of quinone is a probe signal. The biosensor can be used for quantification of polar organic solvents, and its mechanism was characterized with in situ steady-state amperometry-quartz crystal microbalance experiments. The detection limit, sensitivity, and dynamic range for certain organic solvents are dependent on the kind and concentration of the substrate probe and the hydrophobicity of the immobilization matrix. The response time for all the tested organic solvents is less than 2 min.

Polyaniline (PAn) with different molecular weight was prepared by adding organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol or THF into the polymerization mixture. Open-circuit potential measurements showed that the polymerization rate was lowered by the addition of the organic solvent Spectral studies showed that PAn intermediate before the oxidant was consumed was pernigraniline and it was reduced to emeraldine base rapidly by aniline in the termination period. A mechanism of chain propagation was proposed. Chain propagation and autoacceleration period were almost independent of addition of pernigraniline, and the autoacceleration of aniline polymerization is due to more rapid initiation rate. In situ STM has been used to study the structure of hemoglobin(Hb) in two kinds of organic media. In hydrophobic organic solvent such as carbon tetrachloride, the structure of Hb is almost the same as in aqueous solution, similar to its native structure. However, when in hydrophilic organic solvent such as dimethylformamide, the two dimers of Hb molecule become separate and unfold to a certain extent.

The potential windows of the system water/pure solvent (W/P) and water/solvent mixtures(W/S) have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry with solvents whose dielectric constants lie between 5.87 and 34.82. In the presence of LiCI in the aqueous phase and tetrabutytammoniumtetraphenylborate(TBATPB) in the organic phase, the systems water/allyl iso-thiocyanate (W/AIT) and water/nitrobensene (W/NB) show a same wide epotential window. thermodynamic parameters of ion transfer W/AIT interface were determined. In systems of W/P and V/S the influence solvent effect on the standard gibbs energies of transfer of was discussed.

The thermodynamics of micellization for polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene/propylene) two-Mock copolymer(SEP) in the mixtures of n-octane and benzene with different proportions have been studied in this paper, The critical micelle concentrations(GMC) of micelle solutions at various temperatures were measured by lost angle laser light scattering photometer(LALLS), The results shove that the micellization process of nonpolar copolymer SEP in hydrocarbon solvents ire exothermal, and the entropy change is negative, In contrast, far ordinary surfactants in water, it is the enthalpy contribution to the energy change which is responsible for micellization.

The responses of a cryohydrogel tyrosinase enzyme electrode to four substrates in three pure water immiscible organic solvents were investigated. Kinetic parameters, the maximum kinetic current, I-max, the apparent Michaelis-Menten constant, K-m(app), and I-max/K-m(app), were calculated. The I-max/K-m(app) value was taken as an indicator of the catalytic efficiency of the sensor. The effect of the substrate hydrophobicity on I-max/K-m(app) and response time of the sensor were discussed. The effects of both hydrophobicity (log P) and dielectric constant (epsilon) of the organic solvent on the catalytic efficiency of the enzyme in the organic phase were studied. A dimethylformamide-polyhydroxyl cellulose organo-hydrogel has been prepared, and its applications for enzyme immobilization in construction of organic phase biosensors have been exploited. With horseradish peroxidase, tyrosinase, and bilirubin oxidase immobilized in the organohydrogel, enzyme electrodes can be operated in various situations, including aqueous buffer, oil/water mixtures, and anhydrous organic solvents, and even in dimethylformamide, to determine analytes of different solubilities, e.g., organic peroxides, phenolic compounds and bilirubin. Biosensing has no restrictions in terms of measuring media and solubilities of analytes.

The determination of benzoic acid, thiourea and 2-mercaptoethanol in three pure organic solvents, viz., chloroform, chlorobenzene and 1,2-dichlorobenzene, by using an amperometric cryohydrogel tyrosinase biosensor is described. Measurements were carried out with phenol as the enzyme substrate. Kinetic parameters (K-i and I-50) were determined in the three solvents for various inhibitors. The sensor showed the most sensitive measurements to these inhibitors in pure chloroform. The solvent-induced deviation of the biosensor to thiourea was evaluated by means of Hill coefficients. The smallest deviation as observed in 1,2-dichlorobenzene, owing to the high hydrophobicity of this solvent. The nature of the inhibition process and its reversibility mere also examined.

Two new azo dyes of alpha-isoxazolylazo-beta-dilcetones and their Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes with blue-violet light wavelength were synthesized using a coupling component, different diazo components and metal (II) ions (Ni2+ and Cu2+). Based on the elemental analysis, MS spectra and FT-IR spectral analyses, azo dyes were unequivocally shown to exist as hydrazoketo and azoenol forms which were respectively obtained from the solution forms and from the solid forms. The action of sodium methoxide (NaOMe) on azo dyes in solutions converts hydrazoketo form into azoenol form, so azo dyes are coordinated with metal (II) ions as co-ligands in the azoenol forms. The solubility of all the compounds in common organic solvents such as 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoro-1-propanol (TFP) or chloroform (CHCl3) and absorption properties of spin-coating thin films were measured. The difference of absorption maxima from the complexes to their ligands was discussed. In addition, the TG analysis of the complexes was also determined, and their thermal stability was evaluated. It is found that these new metal (II) complexes had potential application for high-density digital versatile disc-recordable (HD-DVD-R) system due to their good solubility in organic solvents, reasonable and controllable absorption spectra in blue-violet light region and high thermal stability. Three kinds of metal(II) tetraazaporphyrin complexes with blue-violet and red light wavelength absorption were synthesized by refluxing tetraazaporphyrin ligand and different metal(II) ions, respectively. Their structures were confirmed by elemental analysis, LDI-TOF-MS, FT-IR and UV-Vis. The solubility of metal(II) tetraazaporphyrin complexes in organic solvents and absorption properties of their chloroform solution and films on K9 glass in the region 250-800 nm were measured. The influence on the difference of absorption maximum from metal(II) tetraazaporphyrin complexes to tetraazaporphyrin ligand by different metal(II) ions was studied. Two kinds of nickel(II) and copper(II) P-diketone complexes derived from thenoyltrifluoroacetone ligand with blue-violet light absorption were synthesized by reacting free ligand and different metal(II) ions in sodium methoxide solution. Their structures were postulated based on elemental analysis, ESI-MS, FT-IR spectra and UV-vis electronic absorption spectra. Smooth films on K9 glass substrates were prepared using the spin-coating method.
