Several Chiral BINOL functionalized mesoporous silicas were prepared by post grafting of organosilane derivatives of (S)-BINOL (1,1'-bi-2-naphthol) on SBA-15 and characterized by C-13 CP/MAS NMR, FT-IR, UV-visible absorption spectra, elemental analysis, powder XRD, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and TEM techniques. Their catalytic properties were demonstrated in enantioselective Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction of 3-phenylpropanal and cyclohexenone.

In this paper, it was found that glucose oxidase (GOD) has been stably immobilized on glassy carbon electrode modified by ordered mesoporous silica-SBA-15 and Nafion. The sorption behavior of GOD immobilized on SBA-15 matrix was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), FTIR, respectively, which demonstrated that SBA-15 can facilitate the electron exchange between the electroactive center of GOD and electrode. The direct electrochemistry and electrocatalysis behavior of GOD on modified electrode were characterized by cyclic voltammogram (CV) which indicated that GOD immobilized on Nafion and SBA-15 matrices displays direct, nearly reversible and surface-controlled redox reaction with an enhanced electron transfer rate constant of 3.89 s(-1) in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS) (pH 7.12).

This study demonstrates a novel compartment-less glucose/O-2 biofuel cell (BFC) based on highly ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) with three-dimensionally (3D) interconnected and ordered pore structures. OMCs are used as supports for both stably confining the electrocatalyst (i.e., meldola's blue, MDB) for NADH oxidation and the anodic biocatalyst (i.e., NAD(+)-dependent glucose dehydrogenase, GDH) for glucose oxidation, and for facilitating direct electrochemistry of the cathodic biocatalyst (i.e., laccase, LAC) for O-2 electroreduction. In 0.10 M pH 6.0 PBS containing 20 mM NAD(+) and 60 mM glucose under the air-saturated atmosphere, the open circuit voltage (0.82 V) and the maximum power output (38.7 mu W cm(-2) (at 0.54V)) of the assembled compartment-less OMCs-based BFC are both higher than those of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based BFC (0.75 V and 2.1 mu W cm(-2) (at 0.46 V)).

Ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica material (JLU-30) has been successfully synthesized in alkaline media at high temperature (> 160 degreesC, using cationic (1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidin-2-ylidene)hexadecylmethyl-ammonium bromide (DIHAB) as a template, and characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, differential thermal analysis (DTA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TG), as well as Al-27 and Si-29 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Mesoporous JLU-30 shows much higher hydrothermal stability than MCM-41. Si-29 NMR spectra indicate that the pore walls of JLU-30 samples synthesized at high temperature (160 degreesC) are fully condensed, giving a Q(4)/Q(3) ratio as high as 6.2. In contrast, MCM-41 synthesized at relatively low temperature (100 degreesC) shows the Q(4)/Q(3) + Q(2) ratio at 1.1. Such unique structural feature might be responsible for the observed highly hydrothermal stability of the mesoporous silica materials (JLU-30).

Organic mesoporous silicas (OMSs) were synthesized in the presence of urea via one-pot synthesis method, in which tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilica (APTES) were used as the silica resources, non-ionic surfactant was used as the template. XRD results showed that the average periodic mesopore sizes of OMSs in the presence of urea were larger than those in the absence of urea. It was also found that the pore sizes of the products in the presence of urea distributed more narrowly than those in the absence of urea, and the contents of organosiloxane incorporated into OMSs, the pore wall thicknesses, the pore volumes and the surface areas of the products all increased with the use of urea. This shows a novel way to synthesize high regular and periodic organic mesoporous silicas.

Ordered mesoporous carbons composed of arrays of nanotubes have been synthesized using ordered mesoporous silica templates via catalytic chemical vapor deposition. The ordered carbons possess bimodal pores, namely, the pores arise from the "replica" of frameworks of the template and the pores correspond to carbon nanotubes formed in the channels of the template (see Figure).

Aluminum was incorporated into the mesoporous framework of ethane-silica by one-pot condensation of Al(OiPr)(3) with 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane using octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride as surfactant. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns, nitrogen sorption analysis, and TEM results reveal the formation of an ordered mesoporous material with uniform porosity. Al-27 MAS NMR confirms the incorporation of aluminum in the framework. The synthesized materials exhibit extremely high hydrothermal stability in boiling water (no obvious change of mesostructure and textural properties was observed even after refluxing in water for 100 h), which could be mainly contributed to the ethane-bridged mesoporous framework. The aluminum-containing mesoporous ethane-silicas are efficient catalysts for the alkylation of 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol by cinnamyl alcohol to yield a flavan.

Thiol-functionalized mesoporous ethane-silicas with large pore were synthesized by co-condensation of 1,2-bis(trimethoxy-sily)ethane (BTME) with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) using nonionic oligomeric polymer C1H (OCH(2)-CH(2))(10)OH (Brij-76) or poly(alkylene oxide) block copolymer (P123) as surfactant in acidic medium. The results of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen gas adsorption, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that the resultant materials have well-ordered hexagonal mesoscopic structure with uniform pore size distributions. (29)Si MAS NNR, (13)C CP-MAS NMR. FT-IR, and UV Raman spectroscopies confirm the attachment of thiol functionalities in the mesoporous ethane-sificas. The maximum content of the attached thiol group (-SH) in the mesoporous framework is 2.48mmol/g. The ordered mesoporous materials are efficient Hg(2+) adsorbents with almost every -SH site accessible to Hg(2+). In the presence of various kinds of heavy metal ions such as Hg(2+), Cd(2+), Zn(2+), Cu(2+) and Cr(3+), the materials synthesized using poly(alkylene oxide) block cooollxmier (Pluronic 123) g(2+), as surfactant show almost similar affinity to Hg(2+), Cd(2+), and Cr(3+), while the materials synthesized using ofigomeric polymer C(18)H(37)(OCH(2)CH(2))(10)OH (Brij-76) as surfactant exhibit high selectivity to Hg(2+). Highly ordered mesoporous ethanesilica (MES) with 2D hexagonal structure was synthesized from 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl) ethane under neutral conditions for the first time. Divalent salts, such as NiCl2, MgCl2, ZnCl2, ZnSO4 and Zn(NO3)(2), were used to help the formation of the ordered mesostructure. The MES samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, nitrogen sorption, transmission electron microscopy, FT-IR, C-13 and Si-29 solid-state NMR and thermal gravimetric analysis. A phase transition from a disordered wormhole-like structure to an ordered P6mm structure was observed upon the addition of inorganic salts. The pore size of the MES decreases from 4.7 to 3.9 nm with increasing content of the inorganic salts. Fluoride was also found to be important for the formation of ordered MES under neutral conditions.

Aluminum-substituted mesoporous SBA-15 (Al-SBA-15) materials were directly synthesized by a hydrolysis-controlled approach in which the hydrolysis of the silicon precursor (tetraethyl orthosilicate, TEOS) is accelerated by fluoride or by using tetramethyl orthosilicate (TMOS) as silicon precursor rather than TEOS. These materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 sorption isotherms, TEM, Al-27 MAS NMR, IR spectra of pyridine adsorption, and NH3-TPD. It is found that the matched hydrolysis and condensation rates of silicon and aluminum precursors are important factors to achieve highly ordered mesoporous materials. Al-27 MAS NMR spectra of Al-SBA-15 show that all aluminum species were incorporated into the silica framework for the samples prepared with the addition of fluoride. A two-step approach (sol-gel reaction at low pH followed by crystallization at high pH) was also employed for the synthesis of Al-SBA-15. Studies show that the two-step approach could efficiently avoid the leaching of aluminum from the framework of the material. The calcined Al-SBA-15 materials show highly ordered hexagonal mesostructure and have both Bronsted and Lewis acid sites with medium acidity.

By using the bifunctional ligand, 8-hydroxyquinoline-functionalized organosilane (Q-Si), the new mesoporous material Q-MCM-41 covalently bonded with 8-hydroxyquinoline was synthesized. Through the ligand exchange reaction, the new near-infrared (NIR) luminescent mesoporous LnQ(3)-MCM-41 (Ln = Er, Nd, Yb) materials were prepared by linking the lanthanide quinolinate complexes to the ordered mesoporous Q-MCM-41 material. The LnQ(3)-MCM-41 materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and N-2 adsorption/desorption, and they all show the characteristic mesoporous structure of MCM-41 with highly uniform pore size distributions.
