Chitosan(chitin)/cellulose composites as biodegradable biosorbents were prepared under an environment-friendly preparation processes using ionic liquids. Infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectra indicated the stronger intermolecular hydrogen bond between chitosan and cellulose, and the hydroxyl and amine groups were believed to be the metal ion binding sites. Among the prepared biosorbents, freeze-dried composite had higher adsorption capacity and better stability. The capacity of adsorption was found to be Cu(II) (0.417 mmol/g) > Zn(II) (0.303 mmol/g) > Cr(VI) (0.251 mmol/g) > Ni(II) (0.225 mmol/g) > Ph(II) (0.127 mmol/g) at the same initial concentration 5 mmol L-1. In contrast to some other chitosan-type biosorbents, preparation and component of the biosorbent were obviously more environment friendly. Moreover, adsorption capacity of chitosan in the blending biosorbent could be fully shown.

Equilibrium distributions of cobalt(II), nickel(II), zinc(II), cadmium(II), and copper(II) have been studied in the adsorption with extraction resin containing 1-hexyl-4-ethyloctyl isopropylphosphonic acid (HEOPPA) as an extractant from chloride medium. The distribution coefficients are determined as a function of pH. The data are analyzed both graphically and numerically. The extraction of the metal ions can be explained assuming the formation of metal complexes in the resin phase with a general composition ML2(HL)(q). The adsorbed species of the metal ions are proposed to be ML2 and the equilibrium constants are calculated. The efficiency of the resin in the separation of the metal ions is provided according to the separation factors values. The separation of Zn from Ni, Cd, Cu, Co, and Co from Ni, Cd, Cu with the resin is determined to be available. Furthermore, Freundlich's isothermal adsorption equations and thermodynamic quantities, i.e., DeltaG, DeltaH, and DeltaS are determined.

Human serum albumin adsorption onto gold surfaces was investigated by electrochemical and ellipsometric methods. Albumin adsorption onto gold was confirmed by the change of the open circuit potential of gold and by the ellipsometric parameter variation during albumin immobilization. In both experiments the parameters reached stable values within 10-15 min. The albumin adsorption layer thickness measured with the ellipsometer was about 1.5 nm. The adsorption of albumin Under applied potential was also investigated and it was found that both positive and negative applied potential promote albumin adsorption. Changes in the optical parameters of bare gold and albumin adsorbed onto gold surface under applied potential were investigated with in Situ ellipsometry. The similarity and reversibility of the optical changes showed that adsorbed albumin was stable on the gold surface Under the applied potential range (-200-600 mV). The cyclic voltammograms of K3Fe(CN)(6) on the modified gold surface showed that albumin Could partly block the oxidation and reduction reaction. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to study the interaction of His-tagged peptide with three different metal surfaces in explicit water. The equilibrium properties are analyzed by using pair correlation functions (PCF) to give an insight into the behavior of the peptide adsorption to metal surfaces in water solvent. The intermolecular interactions between peptide residues and the metal surfaces are evaluated. By pulling the peptide away from the peptide in the presence of solvent water, peeling forces are obtained and reveal the binding strength of peptide adsorption on nickel, copper and gold. From the analysis of the dynamics properties of the peptide interaction with the metal surfaces, it is shown that the affinity of peptide to Ni surface is the strongest, while on Cu and An the affinity is a little weaker. In MD simulations including metals, the His-tagged region interacts with the substrate to an extent greater than the other regions. The work presented here reveals various interactions between His-tagged peptide and Ni/Cu/Au surfaces. The interesting affinities and dynamical properties of the peptide are also derived. The results give predictions for the structure of His-tagged peptide adsorbing on three different metal surfaces and show the different affinities between them, which assist the understanding of how peptides behave on metal surfaces and of how designers select amino sequences in molecule devices design. The initial adsorption stages and the interaction of oxygen on FeSi surfaces have been studied as a function of exposure and annealing temperature using a variety of techniques including HREELS, AES, LEED, XPS and UPS. O2 was found to adsorb dissociatively on the FeSi surfaces at room temperature. The whole adsorption process can be divided into four stages. Heating promotes the oxidation of Si, and a thin SiO2 overlayer is formed on the surface when annealed at 450-degrees-C, while all FeOx species are reduced. Models for adsorbed atomic O on the FeSi(100) surface exposed to different oxygen exposures have been put forward to account for the observed experimental results.

Peptide mass mapping analysis, utilizing a regenerable enzyme microreactor with metal-ion chelated adsorption of enzyme, combined with matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) was developed. Different procedures from the conventional approaches were adopted to immobilize the chelator onto the silica supports, that is, the metal chelating agent of iminodiacetic acid (IDA) was reacted with glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO) before its immobilization onto the inner wall of the fused-silica capillary pretreated with NH4HF2. The metal ion of copper and subsequently enzyme was specifically adsorbed onto the surface to form the immobilized enzyme capillary microreactor, which was combined with MALDI-TOF-MS to apply for the mass mapping analysis of nL amounts of protein samples. The results revealed that the peptide mapping could routinely be generated from 0.5 pmol protein sample in 15 min at 50degreesC, even 20 fmol cytochrome c could be well digested and detected.

An automated and semi-intelligent voltammetric system is described for trace metal analysis. The system consists of a voltammeter interfaced with a personal computer, a sample changer, 2 peristaltic pumps, a motor burette and a hanging mercury drop electrode. The system carries out fully automatically approximately 5 metal determinations per hour (including at least 3 repetitive scans and calibration by standard addition) at trace levels encountered in clean sea water. The computer program decides what level of standard addition to use and evaluates the data prior to switching to the next sample. Alternatively, the system can be used to carry out complexing ligand titration with copper whilst recording the labile copper concentration; in this mode up to 8 full titrations are carried out per day. Depth profiles for chromium speciation in the Mediterranean Sea and a profile for copper complexing ligand concentrations in the North Atlantic Ocean measured on board-ship with the system are presented. The chromium speciation was determined using a new method to differentiate between Cr(III) and Cr(VI) utilizing adsorption of Cr(III) on silica particles.

N-Methylimidazolium functionalized strongly basic anion exchange resins in the Cl- form (RCI) and SO46- form (R2SO4) were synthesized and employed for adsorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. FT-IR and elementary analysis proved the structures of anion exchange resins and the content of functional groups. The gel-type strongly basic anion exchange resins had high thermal stability according to TGA and good chemical stability under the experimental conditions. The adsorption behaviors of Cr(VI) on RCI and R2SO4 were studied using the batch technique. It was shown that adsorption equilibrium was reached rapidly within 60 min. The adsorption data for RCI and R2SO4 were consistent with the Langmuir isotherm equation.

Adsorption of polyethyleneimine (PEI)-metal ion complexes onto the surfaces of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and subsequent reduction of the metal ion leads to the fabrication of one-dimensional CNT/metal nanoparticle (CNT/M NP) heterogeneous nanostructures. Alternating adsorption of PEI-metal ion complexes and CNTs on substrates results in the formation of multilayered CNT films. After exposing the films to NaBH4, three-dimensional CNT composite films embedded with metal nanoparticles (NPs) are obtained. UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are used to characterize the film assembly. The resulting (CNT/M NP)(n) films inherit the properties from both the metal NPs and CNTs that exhibit unique performance in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and electrocatalytic activities to the reduction of O-2; as a result, they are more attractive compared to (CNT/polyelectrolyte)(n) and (NP/polyelectrolyte)(n) films because of their multifunctionality.
