In this paper, the mechanical properties of PI/Si_O, nanocomposite hybrid films with different silica doping levels are experimentally studied at low temperature. Experimental results show that the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the PI/Si_O, nanocomposite hybrid films gradually reduces when the ambiance temperature is decreased. At the liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K), the CTE value is about five times less than that at room temperature (287 K). The measured CTEs of hybrid films greatly decrease when doped with inorganic silica, especially when the silica doping level is more than 1 wt.%. However, too high silica contents (more than 10 wt.%) can cause problem to disperse effectively and the specimens become quite opaque. Experimental results also show that the effects of the pre-applied stress levels can be neglected on the CTE testing. When the ambient temperature changes from 287 to 77 K, the measured average values of the films' ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and Young's modulus increase about 60 and 90%, respectively, while the breaking elongation decreases about 42%.

The viscoelastic deformation of Ce-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) with low glass transition temperature is investigated at room temperature. Contact stiffness and elastic modulus of Ce-based BMGs cannot be derived using the conventional Oliver-Pharr method [W. C. Oliver and G. M. Pharr, J. Mater. Res. 7, 1564 (1992)]. The present work shows that the time dependent displacement of unloading segments can be described well by a generalized Kelvin model. Thus, a modified Oliver-Pharr method is proposed to evaluate the contact stiffness and elastic modulus, which does, in fact, reproduce the values obtained via uniaxial compression tests. Due to its inert reaction in soil system and distinctive vertical distribution in soil profile, caesium-137 (Cs-137) has been used as a tracer to assess wind erosion. In this study, 62 soil samples were collected from 4 sampling sites in Taipusi County, Inner Mongolia; Caesium-137 activities for those soil samples were measured using a gamma-ray spectrometry in Sichuan University, Chengdu. Distribution pattern of Cs-137 in vertical soil profile was different for different land use and land cover types. Caesium-137 was distributed homogeneously in plow layer of cropland, and negatively exponential in low to medium cover grassland. Distribution pattern in high covered grassland was represented by a peak at 2-4 cm soil depth followed by a negative exponential curve. Based on those findings, simplified mass balance model was chosen to estimate the rate of wind erosion for cropland, while profile distribution model was used for grassland. Estimated wind erosion rates were 7990, 4270 and 1808 Mg(.)km(-2.)a(-1) for cropland, low cover grassland and medium cover grassland, respectively. Wind erosion intensity correlated negatively with plant cover.

First-principle calculations are performed to investigate the structural, elastic, and electronic properties of ReB2 and WB2. The calculated equilibrium structural parameters of ReB2 are consistent with the available experimental data. The calculations indicate that WB2 in the P6(3)/mmc space group is more energetically stable under the ambient condition than in the P6/mmm. Based on the calculated bulk modulus, shear modulus of polycrystalline aggregate, ReB2 and WB2 can be regarded as potential candidates of ultra-incompressible and hard materials. Furthermore, the elastic anisotropy is discussed by investigating the elastic stiffness constants. Density of states and electron density analysis unravel the covalent bonding between the transition metal atoms and the boron atoms as the driving force of the high bulk modulus and high shear modulus as well as small Poisson's ratio.

The positive temperature coefficient (PTC) and negative temperature coefficient (NTC) effect of carbon black (CB) filled low density polyethylene (LDPE) composites was studied using electrical resistivity spectra, DSC, tensile mechanical analysis (TMA) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. The three LDPEs used have a similar crystallinity and different melting index (MI). The experimental results indicate that the CB has no significant effect on the crystallinity and the long spacing of crystalline domains of LDPE. Based upon the TMA and dynamic elastic modulus spectra, it can be concluded that the PTC effect is related to the thermal expansion of the polymer matrix, and the NTC effect is caused by a decrease of the elastic modulus of the polymer at high temperatures. The NTC effect can be reduced by enhancing either the elastic modulus or the interaction between carbon black and matrix. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
