A 1.55-mu m single shallow ridge electroabsorptionmodulated distributed feedback laser that is monolithically integrated with a buried-ridge-stripe dual-core spot-size converter (SSC) at the input and output ports was fabricated by combining selective area growth, quantum-well intermixing, and dual-core integration techniques simultaneously. These devices exhibit a threshold current of 34 mA, a side mode suppression ratio of 38.0 dB, a 3-dB modulation bandwidth of 11.0 GHz, and a modulator extinction ratio of 25.0 dB dc. The output beam divergence angles of the SSC in the horizontal and vertical directions are as small as 7.3 degrees x 18 degrees, respectively, resulting in 3.2-dB coupling loss with a cleaved single-mode optical fiber.

We have demonstrated an electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) monolithically integrated with novel dual-waveguide spot-size converters (SSCs) at the input and output ports for low-loss coupling to planar light-guide circuit silica waveguide or cleaved single-mode optical fiber. The device is fabricated by means of selective-area MOVPE growth (SAG), quantum well intermixing (QWI) and asymmetric twin waveguide (ATG) technologies with only three steps low-pressure MOVPE growth. For the device structure, in SOA/EAM section, double ridge structure was employed to reduce the EAM capacitances and enable high bit-rate operation. In the SSC sections, buried ridge stripe (BRS) were incorporated. Such a combination of ridge, ATG and BRS structure is reported for the first time in which it can take advantage of both easy processing of ridge structure and the excellent mode characteristic of BRS. At the wavelength range of 1550-1600 nm, lossless operation with extinction ratios of 25 dB DC and more than 10 GHz 3-dB bandwidth is successfully achieved. The beam divergence angles of the input and output ports of the device are as small as 8.0 degrees x 12.6 degrees, resulting in 3.0 dB coupling loss with cleaved single-mode optical fiber. A silicon-on-insulator (SOI) optical fiber-to-waveguide spot-size converter (SSC) overlaid with specially treated silica is investigated for integrated optical circuits. Unlike the conventional process of simply depositing the hot silica on silicon waveguides, two successive layers of silicon dioxide were grown on etched SSC structures by PECVD (plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition). The two layers have 0.8% index contrast and supply stronger cladding for an incident light beam. Additionally, this process is able to reduce the effective refractive index of the input mode to less than 1.47 (extremely close to that of the fiber), substantially weakening the unwanted back reflection. Exploiting this technology, it was demonstrated that the SSC showed a theoretical low mode mismatch loss of 1.23 dB for a TE-like mode and has an experimental coupling efficiency of 66%.

In this paper, several simplification methods are presented for shape control of repetitive structures such as symmetrical, rotational periodic, linear periodic, chain and axisymmetrical structures. Some special features in the differential equations governing these repetitive structures are examined by considering the whole structures. Based on the special properties of the governing equations, several methods are presented for simplifying their solution process. Finally, the static shape control of a cantilever symmetrical plate with piezoelectric actuator patches is demonstrated using the present simplification method. The result shows that present methods can effectively be used to find the optimal control voltage for shape control.

We propose an integrated algorithm named low dimensional simplex evolution extension (LDSEE) for expensive global optimization in which only a very limited number of function evaluations is allowed. The new algorithm accelerates an existing global optimization, low dimensional simplex evolution (LDSE), by using radial basis function (RBF) interpolation and tabu search. Different from other expensive global optimization methods, LDSEE integrates the RBF interpolation and tabu search with the LDSE algorithm rather than just calling existing global optimization algorithms as subroutines. As a result, it can keep a good balance between the model approximation and the global search. Meanwhile it is self-contained. It does not rely on other GO algorithms and is very easy to use. Numerical results show that it is a competitive alternative for expensive global optimization.

We demonstrate that a Raman sensor integrated with a micro-heater, a microfluidic chamber, and a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate can be fabricated in a glass chip by femtosecond laser micromachining. The micro-heater and the SERS substrate are fabricated by selective metallization on the glass surface using a femtosecond laser oscillator, whereas the microfluidic chamber embedded in the glass sample is fabricated by femtosecond laser ablation using a femtosecond laser amplifier. We believed that this new strategy for fabricating multifunctional integrated microchips has great potential application for lab-on-a-chips. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
