The extraction and stripping kinetics of yttrium(III) with bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272, HA) dissolved in heptane as an acid extractant have been investigated by constant interfacial cell with laminar flow. The experimental hydrodynamic conditions have been chosen so that the contribution of diffusion to the measured rate of reaction is minimized. The plot of interfacial area on the rate has shown a linear relationship, which makes the interface the most probable local for the chemical reactions. At the same time, the extraction thermodynamic and kinetic methods are compared to determine the equilibrium extraction constant. A rate equation and the rate-determining step of the extraction and stripping of yttrium(III) have also been obtained, respectively.

Studies of the extraction kinetics of cerium(IV) into n-heptane solutions of di(2-ethylhexyl)-2-ethylhexyl phosphonate DEHEHP from HNO3-HF solutions have been carried out using a constant interfacial cell with laminar flow. The experimental hydrodynamic conditions were chosen so that the contribution of diffusion to the measured rate of reaction was minimized. The data were analyzed in terms of pseudo-first order constants. The effects of the stirring rate, specific interfacial area, and temperature on the extraction rate showed that the most probable reaction zone is in the aqueous homogeneous phase. The results were compared with those of the system without HF. It was concluded that the presence of HF decreases the extraction rate of cerium. The addition of HF increases the activation energy for the forward reaction from 21.2 to 55.3 kJ/mol and for the reverse process from 57.9 to 79.0 kJ/mol. According to the experimental data correlated as a function of the concentration of the relevant species involved in the extraction reaction, the corresponding rate equation was deduced as follows:-d[Ce]/dt = k[Ce] center dot B-0.62 center dot HF-0.58 center dot [NO3-](0.57)

Studies of the extraction kinetics of cerium(IV) from H2SO4-HF solutions with Cyanex 923 in n-heptane have been carried out using a constant interfacial area cell with laminar flow. The experimental hydrodynamic conditions were chosen so that the contribution of diffusion to the measured rate of reaction was minimized. The data were analyzed in terms of pseudo-first order constants. The results were compared with those of the system without HF. It was concluded that the addition of HF reduces the activation energy for the forward rate from 46.2 to 36.5 U mol(-1) while it has an opposite effect on the activation energy for the reverse process(the activation energy increased from 23.3 to 90.8 U mol(-1)). Thus, HF can accelerate the rate of cerium(IV) extraction. At the same time, the extraction rate is controlled by a mixed chemical reaction-diffusion rather than by a chemical reaction alone. A rate equation has also been obtained.

Ce4+ extraction rate from aqueous sulphate solutions by Cyanex923 in heptane was studied using a constant interfacial cell with laminar flow at 30 degreesC. The experimental hydrodynamic conditions were chosen and the contribution of diffusion to the measured rate of reaction was minimized. Cerium extraction rate was measured at different chemical composition by varying the concentrations of hydrogen ion, sulphate and Cyanex923. A cerium-Cyanex923(B) extractive is formed at the interface. The data were analyszed in terms of pseudo-first order constants and a reaction mechanism was developed.

River training walls have been built at scores of locations along the NSW coast and their impacts on shoreline change are still not fully understood. In this study, the Brunswick River entrance and adjacent beaches are selected for examination of the impact of the construction of major training walls. Thirteen sets of aerial photographs taken between 1947 and 1994 are used in a CIS approach to accurately determine tire shoreline Position, beach contours and sand volumes, and their changes in both time and space, and then to assess the contribution of both tire structures and natural hydrodynamic conditions to large scale (years-decades and kilometres) beach changes. The impact of the training walls can be divided into four stages: natural conditions prior to their construction (pre 1959), major downdrift erosion and updrift accretion during and. following the construction of the walls in 1959 similar to 1962 and 1966. diminishing impact of the walls between 1966 and 1987, and finally no apparent impact between 1987 similar to 1994. The impact extends horizontally about 8 km updrift and 17 km downdrift, and temporally up to 25 years..

Manganese abnormity has been observed in the Holocene sediments of the mud area of Bohai Sea. On the basis of grain size, chemical composition, heavy mineral content and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) C-14 dating of foraminifer, relationships between manganese abnormity and sedimentation rates, material source, hydrodynamic conditions are probed. Manganese abnormity occurred during the Middle Holocene when sea level and sedimentation rates were higher than those at present. Sedimentary hiatus was not observed when material sources and hydrodynamic conditions were quite similar. Compared with the former period, the latter period showed a decrease in reduction environment and an inclination toward oxidation environment with high manganese content, whereas provenance and hydrodynamic conditions showed only a slight change. From the above observations, it can be concluded that correlation among manganese abnormity, material source, and hydrodynamic conditions is not obvious. Redox environment seems to be the key factor for manganese enrichment, which is mainly related to marine authigenic process.

Locating the quantitized natural sediment fingerprints is an important work for marine sediment dynamics study. The total of 146 sediment samples were collected from the Shelf of the East China Sea and five rivers, including Huanghe (Yellow), Changjiang (Yangtze), Qiantang, Ou and Min River. The sediment grain size and the contents of rare earth elements (REEs) were measured with laser particle size analyzer and ICP-MS technology. The results show that absolute REE content (Sigma REE) and the concentration ratio of light REEs to heavy REEs (L/HREE) are different in the sediments among those rivers. There are higher REE contents in being less than 2 m and 2-31 mu m fractions in the Changjiang Estuary surface sediments. The REE contents of bulk sediment are dominated by the corresponding values of those leading size-fractions. Sigma REE of sediment is higher close to the estuaries and declines seaward on the inner shelf of the East China Sea (ECS). The L/HREE ratio has a tendency of increase southward from 28 degrees N. Hydrodynamic conditions plays a predominate role on spacial distributions of the surficial sediment's REE parameters. In some situations, the currents tend to remove the coarser light grains from initial populations, as well as the deposit of the finer heavy mineral grains. In other situations, the currents will change the ratio of sediment constituents, such as ratio between silts and clays in the sediments. As a result, the various values of Sigma REE or L/HREE ratio in different bulk sediments are more affected by the change of size-fractions than source location. Under the long-term stable hydrodynamic environment, i.e., the East China Sea Shelf, new sediment transport model based on the size and density gradation concept may help to understand the spatial distribution patterns of REE parameters.

Phytoplankton size structure plays a significant role in controlling the carbon flux of marine pelagic ecosystems. The mesoscale distribution and seasonal variation of total and size-fractionated phytoplankton biomass in surface waters. as measured by chlorophyll a (Chl a), was studied in the Southern Yellow Sea using data from four cruises during 2006-2007. The distribution of Chl a showed a high degree of spatial and temporal variation in the study area. Chl a concentrations were relatively high in the summer and autumn, with a mean of 142 and 1.27 mg m(-3), respectively. Conversely, in the winter and spring. the average Chl a levels were only 098 and 0.99 mg m(-3) Total Chl a showed a clear decreasing gradient from coastal areas to the open sea in the summer, autumn and winter cruises. Patches of high Chl a were observed in the central part of the Southern Yellow Sea in the spring due to the onset of the phytoplankton bloom. The eutrophic coastal waters contributed at least 68% of the total phytoplankton biomass in the surface layer. Picophytoplankton showed a consistent and absolute dominance in the central region of the Southern Yellow Sea (>40%) in all of the cruises, while the proportion of microphytoplankton was the highest in coastal waters The relative proportions of pico- and nanophytoplankton decreased with total biomass, whereas the proportion of the micro-fraction increased with total biomass. Relationships between phytoplankton biomass and environmental factors were also analysed. The results showed that the onset of the spring bloom was highly dependent on water column stability. Phytoplankton growth was limited by nutrient availability in the summer due to the strong thermocline. The combined effects of P-limitation and vertical mixing in the autumn restrained the further increase of phytoplankton biomass in the Surface layer. The low phytoplankton biomass in winter was caused by vertical dispersion due to intense mixing. Compared with the availability of nutrients. temperature did not seem to cause direct effects on phytoplankton biomass and its size structure. Although interactions of many different environmental factors affected phytoplankton distributions. hydrodynamic conditions seemed to be the dominant factor. Phytoplankton size structure was determined mainly by the size-differential capacity in acquiring resource. Short time scale events, such as the spring bloom and the extension of Yangtze River plume, can have substantial influences, both on the total Chl a concentration and on the size structure of the phytoplankton. In this paper, the spatial distribution and source of the PCBs in surface sediments of the Southern Yellow Sea (SYS) and influencing factors, such as the sediment characteristics (components, relative proportions and total organic carbon contents), and hydrodynamic conditions were analyzed. PCB concentrations in the surface sediments ranged from 518-5848 pg/g, with average values of 1715 pg/g decreasing sharply compared to last year. In the study area, the PCB pollution level in the middle area was the highest, followed by that of the east coast and the west coast, respectively. Although the PCB level in the coastal areas was lower than that in the middle areas, it was proven in our study that the Yellow Sea obtained PCBs by virtue of river inputs. There was a positive and pertinent correlation between the clay proportion and PCB concentrations, and the increase of the PCB concentrations was directly proportional to the increase of TOC contents, with r = 0.61, but it was contrary to the sediment grain size. Consequently, the factors controlling PCB distribution had direct or indirect relationships with sediment grain size; moreover, the hydrodynamic conditions determined the sediment components and grain size. In conclusion, hydrodynamic conditions of the Yellow Sea were the most important influencing factors effecting the distribution of PCBs in the surface sediments of the SYS. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Fluvial Sedimentation of alluvial facies prevailed during the Late Jrassic in the Minhe Basin. On the basis of the study of sedimentary facies of the Upper Jurassic series.this paper focuses on the river types suing the "Architecture Element" analysis method proposed by Miall, and calculated all the quantitative parameters to reflect the characteristics of the stream channel geometry and hydrodynamic conditions of paleo-rivers with the equations of ethrideg, schumm et al.Finally,we discussed the characteristics of environmental evolution of palsorivers on the quantitative basis. Our conclusion indicates that the evolution of paleo-rivers during the Late Jurassic, from early to late, shows such a tendency as alluvial fan river→ braid river→alluvial fan river→mid-sinuoisty river→ high-sinuosity river.

The present paper describes experimental investigation on the flow pattern and hydrodynamic effect of underwater gas jets from supersonic and sonic nozzles operated in correct- and imperfect expansion conditions. The flow visualizations show that jetting is the flow regime for the submerged gas injection at a high speed in the parameter range under consideration. The obtained results indicate that high-speed gas jets in still water induce large pressure pulsations upstream of the nozzle exit and the presence of shock-cell structure in the over- and under-expanded jets leads to an increase in the intensity of the jet-induced hydrodynamic pressure.

A fifth-order theory for solving the problem of interaction between Stokes waves and exponential profile currents is proposed. The calculated flow fields are compared with measurements. Then the errors caused by the linear superposition method and approximate theory are discussed. It is found that the total wave-current field consists of pure wave, pure current and interaction components. The shear current not only directly changes the flow field, but also indirectly does sx, by changing the wave parameters due to wave-current interaction. The present theory can predict the wave kinematics on shear currents satisfactorily. The linear superposition method may give rise to more than 40% loading error in extreme conditions. When the apparent wave period is used and the Wheeler stretching method is adopted to extrapolate the current, application of the approximate theory is the best.

An experimental study of the properties of hydrodynamic forces upon a marine pipeline is presented in this paper, in the equilibrium scour conditions for various Keulegan-Carpenter numbers and various initial relative gaps between pipeline and the erosive sandy seabed. The tests are conducted in a U-shaped oscillatory water tunnel with a sand box located at the bottom of the test section. According to the experimental results, the maximum horizontal forces on the pipelines with an initial gap to seabed will decrease to some extent due to scouring process. For engineering appliances, it seems safer to estimate wave induced forces on pipelines under the assumption that seabed is plane. However, it should be noticed that great changes would be brought to the frequency properties of lift forces because of the sandy scour beneath the pipeline, which occurs for certain KC numbers.

The objective of this work was to apply visualization methods to the experimental study of cornstarch dust-air mixture combustion in a closed vessel volume under microgravity conditions. A dispersion system with a small scale of turbulence was used in the experiments. A gas igniter initiated combustion of the dust-air mixture in the central or top part of the vessel. Flame propagation through the quiescent mixture was recorded by a high-speed video camera. Experiments showed a very irregular flame front and irregular distribution of the regions with local reactions of re-burning behind the flame front. at a later stage of combustion. Heat transfer from the hot combustion products to the walls is shown to have an important role in the combustion development. The maximum pressure and maximum rate of pressure rise were higher for flame propagation from the vessel center than for flame developed from the top pan of the vessel. The reason for smaller increase of the rate of pressure rise, for the flame developed from the top of the vessel. in comparison with that developed from the vessel center, was much faster increase of the contact surface of the combustion gases with the vessel walls. It was found that in dust flames only small part of hear was released at the flame front, the remaining part being released far behind it.

The growth of highly lattice-mismatched InAs0.3Sb0.7 films on (100) GaAs Substrates by magnetron Sputtering has been investigated and even epitaxial lnAs(0.3)Sb(0.7) films have been successfully obtained. A strong effect of the growth conditions on the film structure was observed, revealing that there was a growth mechanism transition from three-dimensional nucleation growth to epitaxial layer-by-layer growth mode when increasing the substrate temperature. A qualitative explanation for that transition was proposed and the critical conditions for the epitaxial layer-by-layer growth mode were also discussed.
