Luminescences from bismuth-doped lime silicate glasses were investigated. Luminescences centered at about 400, 650, and 1300 nm were observed, excited at 280, 532 and 808 nm, respectively. These three luminescence bands arise from three different kinds of bismuth ions in the glasses. The visible luminescences centered at 400 and 650 nm arise from Bi3+, and Bi2+, respectively. The infrared luminescences cover the wavelength range from 1000 to 1600 nm when exited by an 808 nm laser diode. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the infrared luminescences is more than 205 urn. The intensity of the infrared luminescence decreases with the increment in CaO content. We suggest that the infrared luminescences might arise from Bi+. Such broadband luminescences indicate that the glasses may be potential candidate material for broadband fiber amplifiers and tunable lasers. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The crystal structure of the title compound was determined by X-ray diffraction. The dysprosium ion is eight-coordinated by three oxygen atoms and three nitrogen atoms from three picolinato ions and two water oxygen atoms. The nitrogen atom and one carboxyl oxygen atom of each picolinato ion are coordinated to the same dysprosium ion to form a five-membered chelating ring. The title compound exists as discrete molecules in the crystal structure.
Theoretical investigation on the adsorption of Ag+ and hydrated Ag+ cations on clean Si(111) surface
Resumo:
In this paper, the adsorption of Ag+ and hydrated Ag+ cations on clean Si(111) surface were investigated by using cluster (Gaussian 03) and periodic (DMol(3)) ab initio calculations. Si(111) surface was described with cluster models (Si14H17 and Si22H21) and a four-silicon layer slab with periodic boundary conditions. The effect of basis set superposition error (BSSE) was taken into account by applying the counterpoise correction. The calculated results indicated that the binding energies between hydrated Ag+ cations and clean Si(111) surface are large, suggesting a strong interaction between hydrated Ag+ cations and the semiconductor surface. With the increase of number, water molecules form hydrogen bond network with one another and only one water molecule binds directly to the Ag+ cation. The Ag+ cation in aqueous solution will safely attach to the clean Si(111) surface.

The impact behaviour of a range of glass and ceramic materials has been studied using high-speed photography. A gas gun was used to project hardened spheres at plate specimens in the velocity range 30 to 1000m s-1. The target materials included soda-lime glass, boron carbide and various glass ceramics and aluminas. The performance of a particular ceramic was found to depend on a combination of parameters but of key importance was the relative hardness of the projectile and target materials. The fracture toughness, K(IC), had only a secondary effect.

The magnitude evolution of ettringite and gypsum in hydrated Portland cement mortars due to sulfate attack was detected by X-ray powder diffraction. The influences of sulfate concentration and water-to-cement ratio on the evolution of ettringite and gypsum were investigated. Experimental results show that the magnitude of ettringite formation in sodium sulfate solution follows a three-stage process, namely, the 'penetration period', 'enhance period of strength', and 'macro-crack period'. The cracking of concrete materials is mainly attributed to the effect of ettringite. The gypsum formations occurred in two stages, the 'latent period' and the 'accelerated period'. The gypsum formation including ettringite formation was relative to the linear expansion of mortars to some extend. Both water-to-cement ratio and sulfate concentration play important roles in the evolution of ettringite and gypsum. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report a method for the selective introduction of fluorescent Ag nanoclusters in glass. Extinction and photoluminescence spectra show that a fraction of the Ag atoms are generated through femtosecond laser induced multiphoton reduction and then aggregate to form Ag nanoclusters after heat treatment. Red luminescence from the irradiated region is observed under blue or green laser excitation. The fluorescence can be attributed to interband transitions within Ag nanoclusters. This method provides a novel route to fabricate fluorescent nanomaterials in 3D transparent materials. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The earliest Chinese ancient glasses before the West Han Dynasty (200 BC) from different regions are studied. The glass samples were unearthed from Hunan, Hubei, Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangdong and Xinjiang of China. The chemical composition of these glasses samples is analyzed by proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) method and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). It is shown that the glass chemical compositions belong to barium-lead silicate BaO-PbO-SiO2, potash soda lime silicate K2O (Na2O)-CaO-SiO2 (K2O/Na2O > 1), soda potash lime silicate Na2O (K2O)-CaO-SiO2 (K2O/Na2O < 1) and potash silicate K2O-SiO2 glass systems, respectively. The origins of the earliest Chinese ancient glasses are discussed from the archaeological and historical points of view. These four types of Chinese ancient glasses were all made in Chinese territory using local raw materials. The glass preparation technology was related to the Chinese ancient bronze metallurgy and proto-porcelain glaze technology. The glass technology relationship between the East and the West is analyzed at the same time.

Sol-gel derived TiO2/SiO2/ormosil hybrid planar waveguides have been deposited on soda-lime glass slides and silicon substrates, films were heat treated at 150 degreesC for 2 h or dried at room temperature. Different amounts of water were added to sols to study their impacts on microstructures and optical properties of films. The samples were characterized by m-line spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV/VIS/NIR spectrophotometer (UV-vis), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermal analysis instrument and scattering-detection method. The refractive index was found to have the largest value at the molar ratio H2O/OR = 1 in sol (OR means -OCH3, -OC2H5 and -OC4H9 in the sol), whereas the thickest film appears at H2O/OR = 1/2. The rms surface roughness of all the films is lower than 1.1 nm, and increases with the increase of water content in sol. Higher water content leads to higher attenuation of film. Under a high-pressure mercury lamp (HPML) and using an exposure time of 4 h, the photoproduction of hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-.) could be induced in an aqueous solution containing humic acid (HA). Hydroxyl radicals were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography using benzene as a probe. The results showed that (OH)-O-. photoproduction increased from 1.80 to 2.74 muM by increasing the HA concentration from 10 to 40 mg L-1 at an exposure time of 4 h (pH 6.5). Hydroxyl radical photoproduction in aqueous solutions of HA containing algae was greater than that in the aqueous solutions of HA without algae. The photoproduction of (OH)-O-. in the HA solution with Fe(111) was greater than that of the solution without Fe(III) at pH ranging from 4.0 to 8.0. The photoproduction of (OH)-O-. in HA solution with algae with or without Fe(111) under a 250 W HPML was greater than that under a 125 W HPML. The photoproduction of (OH)-O-. in irradiated samples was influenced by the pH. The results showed that HPML exposure for 4 h in the 4-8 pH range led to the highest (OH)-O-. photoproduction at pH 4.0.
