Novel composite resins possessing good luminescent properties have been synthesized through a free radical copolymerization of styrene, alpha-methylacrylic acid and the binary or ternary complexes of lanthanide ions (Eu3+ and Tb3+). These polymer-based composite resins not only possess good transparency and mechanical performance but also exhibit an intense narrow band emission of lanthanide complexes under UV excitation. We characterized the molecular structure, physical and mechanical performance, and luminescent properties of the composite resins. Spectra investigations indicate that alpha-methyl-acrylic acid act as both solubilizer and ligand. Photoluminescence measurements indicate that the lanthanide complexes show superior emission lines and higher intensities in the resin matrix than in the corresponding pure complex powders, which can be attributed to the restriction of molecular motion of complexes by the polymer chain networks and the exclusion of water molecules from the complex. We also found that the luminescence intensity decreased with increasing content of alpha-methylacrylic acid in the copolymer system. The lifetime of the lanthanide complexes also lengthened when they were incorporated in the polymer matrix. In addition, we found that the relationships between emission intensity and Tb (Eu) content exhibit some extent of concentration quenching.

Transparent 1 at% Nd3+:Y1.9La0.1O3 ceramics were fabricated with nanopowders prepared by carbonate coprecipitation method. The powder compacts were sintered in H-2 atmosphere at 1550 degrees C for 30 h. The Nd3+:Y1.9La0.1O3 ceramics display uniform grains of about 50 mu m and high transparency. The highest transmittance of the ceramics reaches 67%. The strongest absorption peak is in the wavelength of 820 nm with absorption cross section of 2.48 x 10(-20) cm(2). The absorption is still high at LD wavelength 806 nm with absorption cross section of 1.78 x 10(-20) cm(2) and broad full width at half maximum (FWHM) of about 6.3 nm. The strongest emission peak was centered at 1078 nm with large stimulated emission cross section of 9.63 x 10(-20) cm(2) and broad FWHM of about 7.8 nm. The broad absorption and emission bandwidth of Nd3+:y(1.9)La(0.1)O(3) transparent ceramics are favorable to achieve the miniaturized LD pumping apparatus and ultrashort modelocked pulse laser output, respectively. This paper describes the preparation and the characterization Of Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 thin films produced by electric-beam evaporation method. The optical properties, microstructure, surface morphology and the residual stress of the deposited films were investigated by optical spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning probe microscope and optical interferometer. It is shown that the optical transmission spectra of all the YSZ thin films are similar with those of ZrO2 thin film, possessing high transparency in the visible and near-infrared regions. The refractive index of the samples decreases with increasing of Y2O3 content. The crystalline structure of pure ZrO2 films is a mixture of tetragonal phase and monoclinic phase, however, Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 thin films only exhibit the cubic phase independently of how much the added Y2O3 content is. The surface morphology spectrum indicates that all thin films present a crystalline columnar texture with columnar grains perpendicular to the substrate and with a predominantly open microporosity. The residual stress of films transforms tensile from compressive with the increasing Of Y2O3 molar content, which corresponds to the evolutions of the structure and packing densities. We investigated the macroinvertebrate community structure in Three-Gorges Reservoir during a three-year period after the reservoir became operational. Comparison with data of previous authors obtained before the damming showed that the benthic community changed drastically in the reservoir. Oligochaetes and chironomids dominate the present community. An apparent annual cycle in the benthic community (expressed as richness, density and community type) was found in the second year, lagging one year behind the annual cycle of transparency. After the second year, a Nais-Polypedilum community type, occurring in winter and spring with low inflow discharge and high transparency, was followed by a Limnodrilus community type that occurred in autumn and summer under contrasting conditions. Despite river regulation and damming, it appeared that macroinvertebrates in subtropical canyon-shaped reservoirs remained influenced by floods.

In this paper, we presented a novel covalent bonding process between two quartz wafers at 300 degrees C. High-quality wafer bonding was formed by the hydroxylization, aminosilylation and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), respectively, on quartz wafer surfaces, followed by close contact of the GMA functional wafer and the aminosilylation wafer, the epoxy group opening ring reaction was catalyzed by the amino and solidified to form the covalent bonding of the quartz wafers. The shear force between two wafers in all bonding samples was higher than 1.5 MPa. Microfluidic chips bonded by the above procedures had high transparency and the present procedure avoided the adhesive to block or flow into the channel.

A rather simple but yet effective way to achieve a superhydrophobic film by extending a Teflon film is proposed. The water contact angle can be increased from 118 to 165degrees by extending to ca. 190%. The fibrous crystals and the increasing distance between the fibrous crystals are believed responsible for the high water-contact angle. It indicates that the density of the aligned microstructures is very important for the superhydrophobicity.

The binary and ternary rare-earth terbium(m) complexes were introduced into the styrene/alpha -methylacrylic acid copolymerization system, and some optical resins that possess a high transparency in visible light region were obtained. The study of the optical property showed that they have good luminescent properties such as a high luminous intensity and a long luminous lifetime, In addition, we investigated the relationship among the transparency, the luminescent property of the copolymer, and the content of the components in the polymeric system. The results indicated that the optical resins can provide a relatively stable environment for composite rare earth complexes, which is good to exhibit the luminescent properties of rare earth complexes. At the same time, the rare earth complexes can offer the transparent resin a novel function.

A five-level tripod scheme is proposed for obtaining a high efficiency four-wave-mixing (FWM) process. The existence of double-dark resonances leads to a strong modification of the absorption and dispersion properties against a pump wave at two transparency windows. We show that both of them can be used to open the four-wave mixing channel and produce efficient mixing waves. In particular, higher FWM efficiency is always produced at the transparent window corresponding to the relatively weak-coupling field. By manipulating the intensity of the two coupling fields, the conversion efficiency of FWM can be controlled.

Usually GaAs/AlGaAs is utilized as an active layer material in laser diodes operating in the spectral range of 800 850 nm. In this work, in addition to a traditional unstrained GaAs/AlGaAs distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode, a compressively strained InGaAlAs/AlGaAs DFB laser diode is numerically investigated in characteristic. The simulation results show that the compressively strained DFB laser diode has a lower transparency carrier density, higher gain, lower Auger recombination rate, and higher stimulated recombination rate, which lead to better a device performance, than the traditional unstrained GaAs/AlGaAs DFB laser diode.
