The cobalt ferrites with chemical composition Co1+xZnxFe2-2xO4 (r=0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4) were obtained with conventional solid reaction. The ZnO-doped samples have lower lattice constant than CoFe2O4 by adjusting Co ions to the octahedral sites. The results show that doping ZnO could extremely improve the magnetic properties. In comparison with pure CoFe2O4, the little ZnO-doped sample has higher permeability and much lower coercivity at the condition of a little decrease of magnetization saturation. Sample with x=0.1 shows evident magnetostrictive effect at the magnetic field of 30-60 mT while pure cobalt ferrite sample does not, though the saturation magnetostriction decreases. These indicate that ZnO-doping improves the magnetostrictive sensitivity of the cobalt ferrites and have potential applications in magnetoelectric devices and magnetic detector.

CoFe2O4 nanoparticles prepared by chemical coprecipitation method in a magnetic field exhibit novel magnetic properties. The average particle diameter was about 2 nm and larger depending on the post annealing temperature. Magnetization measurements indicate that smaller nanoparticles are superparamagnetic above their respective blocking temperatures. In the blocked state, these nanoparticles exhibit interesting behaviors in the magnetic hysteresis measurements. Constricted, or wasp waisted with extremely narrow waist, hysteresis curves have been observed in the magnetization versus field sweeps. For larger nanoparticles, the room temperature hysteresis is typical of a ferromagnet with an open loop, but the loop closes at lower temperature. The novel magnetic behavior is attributed to the directional order of Co ions and vacancies in CoFe2O4 established during the coprecipitation of the nanoparticles under an applied field.

A series of W-type ferrites with the composition of Ba1-xLaxCo2Fe16O27 (where, x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 020 and 0.25) were prepared by solid-state reaction method. The structure transformations of the ferrites were examined by XRD, DTA-TG and XPS, and the microwave-absorbing properties were investigated by evaluating the permeability and permittivity of materials (mu(r), epsilon(r)). The results showed that the phase-transition temperature increased with the addition of La2+ content, and a single-phase was formed at 1250 degrees C at last. Microwave properties were obviously improved as a result of the substitution of La3+ for Ba2+ at the frequency range of 0.5 similar to 18.0 GHz.

(Ni0.65Zn035Cu0.1Fe1.904)-Cu-./SiO2 natiocomposites were fabricated by the sol-gel method using tetraethylorthosilicate as a precursor of silica, and metal nitrates as precursors of NiZnCu ferrite. With infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, Raman spectra, Mossbauer spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer measurements, the formation of single phase nanocrystalline NiZnCu ferrites dispersed in silica matrix is confirmed when the sample is annealed at 550degreesC. The transition from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic state is observed as the annealing temperature increases from 750degreesC to 1150degreesC. The magnetic properties of these nanocomposites are clearly size dependent. The saturation magnetization increases with the annealing temperature.
