Nontransferred DC laminar plasma jets of stable flow and low impinging pressure acting on the substrate were used to heat W–Mo–Cu cast iron for phase transfer hardening of the surface layer. Substrates were heated in multipass with or without overlapping or heated with only single-pass. Surface morphologies of the molten trace and microstructure of the cross-section were observed, and the hardness distribution of the treated surface layer was examined. The surface layer of single-pass-heated specimen has an average hardness of about 900 HV0.1, while the specimen treated with multipass shows an average hardness of about 700 HV0.1, because of the heat effect from the neighboring pass treating, compared with the substrate hardness of about 300 HV0.1. The results demonstrate the stable and favorably controlled heating of the laminar plasma jet on the substrate surface and feasibility of using it as a tool for surface hardening of cast iron.

The feasibility of using protein A to immobilize antibody on silicon surface for a biosensor with imaging ellipsometry was presented in this study. The amount of human IgG bound with anti-IgG immobilized by the protein A on silicon surface was much more than that bound with anti-IgG immobilized by physical adsorption. The result indicated that the protein A could be used to immobilize antibody molecules in a highly oriented manner and maintain antibody molecular functional configuration on the silicon surface. High reproducibility of the amount of antibody immobilization and homogenous antibody adsorption layer on surfaces could be obtained by this immobilization method. Imaging ellipsometry has been proven to be a fast and reliable detection method and sensitive enough to detect small changes in a molecular monolayer level. The combination of imaging ellipsometry and surface modification with protein A has the potential to be further developed into an efficient immunoassay protein chip.

Practical testing of the feasibility of cyanobacterial inoculation to speed up the recovery of biological soil crusts in the field was conducted in this experiment. Results showed that cyanobacterial and algal cover climbed up to 48.5% and a total of 14 cyanobacterial and algal species were identified at the termination of inoculation experiment; biological crusts' thickness, compressive and chlorophyll a content increased with inoculation time among 3 years; moss species appeared in the second year; cyanobacterial inoculation increased organic carbon and total nitrogen of the soil; total salt, calcium carbonate and electrical conductivity in the soil also increased after inoculation. Diverse vascular plant communities composed of 10 and 9 species are established by cyanobacterial inoculation on the windward and leeward surface of the dunes, respectively, after 3 years. The Simpson index for the above two communities are 0.842 and 0.852, while the Shannon-Weiner index are 2.097 and 2.053, respectively. In conclusion, we suggest that cyanobacterial inoculation would be a suitable and effective technique to recover biological soil crusts, and may further restore the ecological system. Many testing methods are based on program paths. A well-known problem with them is that some paths are infeasible. To decide the feasibility of paths, we may solve a set of constraints. In this paper, we describe constraint-based tools that can be used for this purpose. They accept constraints expressed in a natural form, which may involve variables of different types such as integers, Booleans, reals and fixed-size arrays. The constraint solver is an extension of a Boolean satisfiability checker and it makes use of a linear programming package. The solving algorithm is described, and examples are given to illustrate the use of the tools. For many paths in the testing literature, their feasibility can be decided in a reasonable amount of time.

Within the framework of the pilot heavy-ion therapy facility at GSI equipped with an active beam delivery system of advanced raster scanning technique, a feasibility study on actively conformal heavy-ion irradiation to moving tumors has been experimentally conducted. Laterally, real-time corrections to the beam scanning parameters by the raster scanner, leading to an active beam tracing, compensate for the lateral motion of a target volume. Longitudinally, a mechanically driven wedge energy degrader (called depth scanner) is applied to adjust the beam energy so as to locate the high-dose Bragg peak of heavy ion beam to the slice under treatment for the moving target volume. It has been experimentally shown that compensations for lateral target motion by the raster scanner and longitudinal target shift by the depth scanner are feasible.

The current study investigates the feasibility of using a biodegradable polymeric stent in common bile duct (CBD) repair and reconstruction. Here, poly(l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA, molar ratio LA/GA = 80/20) was processed into a circular tube- and dumbbell-shaped specimens to determine the in vitro degradation behavior in bile. The morphology, weight loss, and molecular weight changes were then investigated in conjunction with evaluations of the mechanical properties of the specimen. Circular tube-shaped PLGA stents with X-ray opacity were subsequently used in common bile duct exploration (CBDE) and primary suturing in canine models. Next, X-ray images of CBD stents in vivo were compared and levels of serum liver enzymes and a histological analysis were conducted after stent transplantation. The results showed that the PLGA stents exhibited the required biomedical properties and spontaneously disappeared from CBDs in 4-5 weeks. The degradation period and function match the requirements in repair and reconstruction of CBDs to support the duct, guide bile drainage, and reduce T-tube-related complications.
