In this paper frequency dependence of small-signal capacitance of p-i-n UV detectors, which were fabricated on GaN grown on sapphire substrate by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition, has been studied. The Schibli-Milnes model was used to analyze the capacitance-frequency characteristics. According to high frequency C-V measurements, the deep level mean concentration is about 2.98 x 10(20) cm(-3). The deep level is caused by the un-ionised Mg dopant. The calculated Mg activation energy is 260 meV and the hole thermal capture cross section of the deep level is about 2.73 x 10(-22) cm(2). The applicability of the Schibli-Milnes model is also discussed when the concentration of deep levels exceeds that of the heavily doped n-side. It is concluded that the analytic expression of the Schibli-Milnes model can still be used to describe the capacitance-frequency characteristics of GaN p-i-n UV detectors in good agreement with experiment. We have prepared the polymer thin films of a 3-(1,1-dicyanothenyl)-1-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazole (DChTP)/poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) guest-host system by spin coating. In order to investigate their temporal and temperature stability, we have measured their dielectric relaxation spectra including the frequency dependence of the real and imaginary parts of dielectric constants. The investigated frequency ranged from 50 Hz to 10 MHz. The measured temperature range above the glass transition temperature T-g (95 degrees C) of the DCNP/PMMA system was from 95 degrees C to 1250C. By using the Adam-Gibbs model, the temperature dependence of the characteristic time tau above T-g was fitted, and the values of the characteristic times tau below T-g were estimated. The lifetimes of the polymer were evaluated by the Kohlrausch-Williams Watts (KWW) empirical decay model. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Nanocomposites based on poly(iminosebacoyl imino-decamethylene) (PA1010) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were successfully prepared by melt blending technique. environmental scanning electron microscope micrographs of the fracture surfaces showed that not only is there an evenly dispersion of MWNTs throughout the PA1010 matrix but also a strongly interfacial adhesion with the matrix. The combined effect of more defects on MWNTs and low temperature buckling fracture is mainly responsible for the broken tubes. Differential scanning calorimeter results showed that the MWNTs acted as a nucleation agent and increased the crystallization rate and decreased crystallite size. In the linear region, rheological measurements showed a distinct change in the frequency dependence of storage modulus, loss modulus, and complex viscosity particularly at low frequencies. We conclude that the rheological percolation threshold might occur when the content of MWNTs is over 2 wt% in the composites.

A novel and quantitative study on structure-property relationships has been carried out in urea crystal, based on the dielectric theory of complex crystals and the modified Levine bond charge model, mainly from the chemical bond viewpoint. For the first time, it was treated like this, and the bond parameters and linear and nonlinear characteristics of constituent chemical bonds were presented quantitatively. The theoretical result agrees satisfactorily with the experimental datum and can reasonably explain the nonlinear origin of urea crystal, that is, the C-N bond in the conjugated system of bonds O double left arrow C<--N-H. At the same time, the novel method should be a useful tool toward the future development of the search for new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials in the organic crystal field.

Vibrational studies on the neuropentapeptide Leu5-enkephalin were performed for the crystal state where different specific conformations can arise. In the present case, the peptide adopts a double fused folded conformation (beta-turn), the presence of which in the crystal state is directly related to the nature of the solvent used for its crystallization. This study completes other work relating to similar conformations of isolated molecules. It can be seen that specific interactions in the crystal state perturb to a large extent the vibrational relationships between the amide frequencies and the specific sets of dihedral angles characteristic of the particular type of turn. The tyrosyl moiety and its frequency dependence on its hydrogen bond state was especially investigated both for the Fermi resonance and the hydroxyl bending modes.

A Monte Carlo simulation is performed to study the dependence of collision frequency on interparticle distance for a system composed of two hard-sphere particles. The simulation quantitatively shows that the collision frequency drops down sharply as the distance between two particles increases. This characteristic provides a useful evidence for the collision-reaction dynamics of aggregation process for the two-particle system described in the other reference.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature on tribological properties of plasma-sprayed Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystal (QC) coating after laser re-melting treatment. The laser treatment resulted in a more uniform, denser and harder microstructure than that of the as-sprayed coatings. Tribological experiments on the coatings were conducted under reciprocating motion at high frequency in the temperature range from 25 to 650 degreesC. Remarkable influence of temperature on the friction behavior of the coating was recorded and analyzed. Microstructural analysis indicated that the wear mechanisms of the re-melted QC coatings changed from abrasive wear at room temperature, to adhesive wear at 400 degreesC and severe adhesive wear at 650 degreesC owing to the material transfer of the counterpart ball. It was also observed that the ratio of the icosahedral (i)-phase to beta-Al-50(Fe,CU)(50) phase in the coating was higher after test at 400 'C than that at 650 'C. The variation of the ratio UP of coating and of the property of the counterpart ball and coating with the temperature are the two main factors influencing the wear mechanisms and value of the friction coefficient.

The frequency upconversion properties of Er3+/Yb3+-codoped heavy metal oxide lead-germanium-bismuth oxide glasses under 975 mn excitation are investigated. Intense green and red emission bands centered at 536, 556 and 672 run, corresponding to the H-2(1/2) --> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) --> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) -->I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+, respectively, were simultaneously observed at room temperature. The influences of PbO on upconversion intensity for the green (536 and 556 nm) and red (672 nm) emissions were compared and discussed. The optimized rare earth doping ratio of Er3+ and Yb3+, is 1:5 for these glasses, which results in the stronger upconversion fluorescence intensities. The dependence of intensities of upconversion emission on excitation power and possible upconversion mechanisms were evaluated and analyzed. The structure of glass has been investigated by means of infrared (IR) spectral analysis. The results indicate that the Er3+/Yb3+-codoped heavy metal oxide lead-germanium-bismuth oxide glasses may be a potential materials for developing upconversion fiber optic devices. A Brillouin temperature signal can be obtained at 11 GHz over a sensing length of 10 km. The power sensitivity dependence on temperature induced by frequency shift is measured as 2.66%/K. A compact continuous-wave blue laser has been demonstrated by direct frequency doubling of a laser diode with a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide crystal. The optimum PPLN temperature is near 28 degreesC, and the dependence of waveguide crystals on crystal temperature is less sensitive than that of bulk crystals. A total of 14.8 mW of 488-nm laser power has been achieved. (C) 2005 Optical Society of America.

Infrared-to-visible upconversion fluorescence of Er(3+)/Yb(3+) co-doped lithium-strontium-lead-bismuth (LSPB) glasses for developing potential upconversion lasers has been studied under 975-nm excitation. Based on the results of energy transfer efficiency and upconversion spectra, the optimal Yb(3+)-Er(3+) concentration ratio is found to be 5:1. Intense green and red emissions centered at 525, 546, and 657 nm, corresponding to the transitions 2H_(11/2)-->4I_(15/2), 4S_(3/2)-->4I_(15/2), and 4F_(9/2)-->4I_(15/2), respectively, were observed. The quadratic dependence of the 525-, 546-, and 657-nm emissions on excitation power indicates that a two-photon absorption process occurs under 975-nm excitation. The high-populated 4I_(11/2) level is supposed to serve as the intermediate state responsible for the upconversion processes. The intense upconversion luminescence of Er(3+)/Yb(3+) co-doped LSPB glasses may be a potentially useful material for developing upconversion optical devices.

This paper reports on the successful preparation and a detailed study on the up-conversion properties of Er3+ -doped TeO2-ZnO-PbCl2 oxylialide tellurite glasses. Three intense emissions centered at around 527, 549 and 666 nm have been clearly observed under 977 nm excitation and the involved mechanisms have been explained. The green emissions centered at 527 and 549 nin are due to the H-2(11/2 ->) I-4(15/2) and S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2) transitions, and the red up-conversion emission centered at 666 nm is associated with the F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+ ions, respectively. The quadratic dependence of fluorescence on excitation laser power confirm that two-photons contribute to up-conversion of the green-red emissions. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
